GIMP 2.10 Tutorial: Create Photographic Text

Is there an option to delete the gradient layer *around* the text? Timestamp 6:30
I'm not super savvy with this kind of stuff, but I have common sense lol can't seem to figure out how to even get any text I type to show up......it only on the right side bar? Super frustrated please tell me how to change my view or fix whatever I need to!!!
