Giltesa Game Boy Advance SP USB-C Centered Mod

Please note that this mod takes advantage of the reversibility of USB Type C cables to implement two separate USB C modes that are not explicitly compatible with each other without an internal USB controller. It does seem to work but it means that some cables may mute the audio over the speaker when trying to charge and other cables will only charge in one orientation. For new folks, I've just been recommending that they carefully cut off the old power port with flush cutters. Even giving them step by step instructions using an iron and solder sucker, I feel like at least half end up still lifting pads.

Would it also help after cutting the port using air solder?

Anyone with proficiency with a hot air station will be more than proficient enough to desolder the port with just an iron. Hot air is a little overkill, you risk melting the plastic inside the port onto the board, and you might lift other components using the hot air. Either remove it with an iron, solder sucker, and wick or cut it off if you aren't comfortable soldering.

Question @makho wouldn't a hot air gun be easier to use to help remove the original charging port?

If you're comfortable melting the port, sure. Make sure you shield all the adjacent parts like the shoulder button, link cable port, and battery terminal or you'll melt those too. Be careful of the components on the opposite side too. This is a dual sided board so you cannot just hit it from the underside either.

Question @makho Do the motherboards require you to install BIOS software or is that all just built into the board? Looking to construct my own sp and couldn't find an answer to this.

Game Boy consoles (all variants) use a SoC design in that the CPU contains every single part of the console, including the BIOS. Most models use external RAM though but otherwise the SoC contains everything you need.

I'm curious about the resolution of that green-tint problem. I've got the same thing going on with one of my boards too, IPS screen but I dont have a stock screen or spare ribbon/mod to troubleshoot with yet.

In this case, it was a bad ribbon cable. I used this specific backlight kit in A LOT of Slates and had managed to put a hole in it.

I just had a problem with my SP speaker after installing the usb-c mod. The thing is that I have sound but it sounds very dirty, you can barely distinguish the music of the game and it sounds very loud a ‘BUZZ’. Can it be something like yours or is it maybe the speaker itself that has broken?

To make it easier for me, in my USB-C installs I'd just snip the two side legs off with flush cutters, then folding the port back and carefully lifting the port off while heating the remaining pins.

6:50 to prevent the nut for the battery screw to fall out, after removing the screws, just close the battery lid and fasten its screw - then it is held in place when opening the case. I just checked my GBA (I used the FunnyPlaying centered USB-C with Audio mod) using the 240pee_mb.gba test rom. I can't hear anything on the left speaker when executing the right output test and vice versa.

I've used a dab of hot glue on units I find myself disassembling frequently. I wonder how effective it would be to just try crimping the adjacent plastic with a fingernail or a flat head screwdriver.

Detach the 2 grounding pins. Snip or desolder, your choice Then cover the CPU and chips close to the port, and then run a ball of solder along it, add heaps of solder and lift it off in a blob 🤷‍♂️
