Like your sports theory, the US women's soccer team are payed less than the men even though they preformed better than the men, and according to ESPN "From 2016 to 2018, women's games generated approximately $50.8 million in revenue, compared to $49.9 million for men's games" they're also projected to bring in more money over the next 4 years than the men are, and yet they're paid significantly less than the men. This is just one example out of many.

@Chris_Gullett I named my source (ESPN), and I went back and took another look and that figure is also quoted by the wall street journal "according to U.S. soccer's audited financial statements". Aside from that, we just heard Gillian Anderson herself state that she was offered half of what David was payed, so sorry if I put more stalk in her words than in your presumption that he was "probably offered the same". Edit- I just watched Gillian Anderson on the Jonathon Ross Show in 2016 and there she states her offer was half of David's offer.

Duchovny was coming off Californication, Anderson hadn't done anything all that recent or successful in America, so it's not all that shocking. In any case her agent did a good job and got her the money she wanted.

Gillian is the real deal...and I can see why the other guest was skeptical of the "half of Duchovny's pay" claim...that is OUTRAGEOUS, I would have bailed on the project entirely. That was dignified of her to accept even equal pay after that disaster...I would have expected recompense for that insult.

She seems to have good days and bad days (as we all do) while being interviewed. It doesn't seem like it is something she particularly enjoys so maybe she comes off a bit moody. But she has a good reputation of being nice to people in public so who knows.

I think Gillian can be hard to read...and Andy is overly-sensitive at times. She is a hybrid American/British-raised woman (and dual-accented, too, which is unusual), and so maybe she's just more closed-off than Andy is use to with his American guests, especially from those god-awful Bravo shows he produces XD

When you ask a bisexual woman when’s the last time she dipped into the lady pond I feel like you need a slap to the head.

I believe if I were a working actress watching this, I would make it a point to find out the names of the executive producers of X files. Not saying I'd never work for them, but I'd damn sure know who, or should I say what, I was dealing with, and be prepared to negotiate with them as ruthlessly as possible.

I find second part of video to be much better.

I mean, if she was just one of those side characters like Robert Patrick etc. then it would be understandable...... but as far as X-Files go, she is on the same level as Dave Duchovny...... the only excuse would be, if she had much smaller screen-time than David, but in X-Files, their screen-time is almost identical, so Gillian definitely deserves the same salary

She has not only more awards for X-Files and other projects but also is more famous ( In the last 3 years she did Hannibal, brilliant The Fall or Streetcar in theatre). Duchovny did only Californication 2 years ago and now is doing some shity boring Aquarius which no one watch. And besides they both are leading actors in X-Files, which should be enough!

+Yolanda Actually, you're wrong. She doesn't have more awards for The X-Files and he's the only actor(male) to have ever won two golden globes for two different TV-Series in the history of television. He is one of the highest paid actors in America while Gillian gets much less than him in England. Having said that, it was right that she got the same for The X-Files since she fought a lot to get paid as much as him back in the 90s.

I think David came back and said they had to give Gillian an equal share or he would walk as well.

Hm...I would say: 'In order to punish such behaviour, you pay me 120% of what David gets, or we don't have a movie.' (If they agree, I would call him and say that I would split the 20% with him so he would be fine with it, too. On the other hand, we don't know how negotiations went down. Maybe David said, that he has to be paid X and then, with their budget in mind, they went to Gillian's agent and said, that they can only afford to pay Y, and they agreed on that. It's always a matter of one is able to get while the other party does not want to pay a dime. Paying both lead roles the same amount is the decent thing to do, but companies are not decent by definition.

I don't believe that TODAY there is still a huge pay inequality for two people doing the exact same job!! Because of their gender!!!

+GaLoS Payment for a role is generally based on the size of the role - the camera time, the amount of lines, and the weight of the character in relation to the script. Gillian and David had equal roles in the film (roles for which they are both known), and therefore merit equal pay. The demand for David (which is not huge, these days, btw) has little to do with it.

+GaLoS Wrong. She has won more awards than him internationally and she fought a lot back in the 90s to get paid as much as him. They got paid the exact same even for I Want To Believe in 2008. Duchovny himself contacted FOX to say that he was only going to sign if they gave Gillian the exact same salary.

She is a terrific actress with great taste, making the most of the fame she achieved from The X-Files with one smart choice after another. In last three years she’s done The Fall, Hannibal and now is doing A Streetcar Named Desire in NY after the success she got on West End in London two years ago. And what he has done? Californication? Wow, great!

On half pay she still managed to out young David, as much as I like him.

Half the pay? - Fuck! -- The industry can be so full of it sometimes. Even the most passive viewer of The X-Files is aware of how valuable Anderson's contribution to that show is; she is Duchovny's equal in that show in all respects.

Hhhmm the one after college was the last woman she was with? Really? Well... we used to always talk about how we would know someone, who knew someone, who talked to some girl, who had picked Gillian up in a bar. Too many stories like that, so my guess is that wasnt the last time, but hey, was glad she when finally came out and said it! Good for her 😁

bngltinkerbell when she's on British T.V. she speaks with an English accent, having lived here when she was younger and living here now. But on American T.V. she uses her American accent. It's like she doesn't actually have a real accent.

My friend spent her youth growing up in both England and Canada and when she visits here in Canada, she has an accent kind of in between. She pronounces some words like she's English and others like she's Canadian. That's the plight of someone bidialectal. Gillian likely changes her accent depending on who she's talking to to make it less awkward.

When you see all these people complaining about women getting paid less than men for the same film this is the answer. If you aren't happy, turn it down, maybe they'll up your pay, maybe they wont. But don't take the job and then complain about it, you have foregonethe right to complain by agreeing to the salary.

There's the misogynist. Most people don't know what their colleagues are getting offered or paid until after the deal is signed. Obviously Gillian did say no and demanded equal pay. Not every woman is in her position of power though.

Duchovny WAS "The X Files", there were other actresses who could have played that part. That's like saying Edie Falco should have been payed the same as James Gandolfini; Gandolfini WAS "The Sopranos".

Falco didn't have the same screen time as Gandolfini, Anderson did have the same screen time...and Anderson was just as fundamental to Scully as a character as Duchovny (moreso imo)

You mean in general? I really don't think so. David is great, but Gillian had way more versatile roles along her career that definitely puts her above David in terms of acting. And even in the X-Files Scully was more complex and demanding than Mulder when it comes to performance.

@@mishastone in terms of acting, maybe. But acting isn’t what Duchovny does full time like Anderson. He directs and writes a HELL of a lot and quit acting a few years back to do music instead.

David is a much bigger star. Of course they wanted to pay him more. I’d watch X-files without Scully, but not X-files without Mulder.
