She is not native British. She was born in the USA. Then her parents moved to the UK for a few years in her early years, then she returned to the USA in her early teens. She's an American who can also speak with a British-English accent.

Elle Louise You’re right but she lived in UK from age 3 to age 11, she basically learned how to speak in England. When she first arrived in her American school when she was 12, she was mocked by the other kids because of her British accent. She’s always preferred England to the US, I think she might have always kept her British accent, but she can adopt the American accent when needed, in American TV shows, movies or interviews.

She's bidialectal, meaning she has two natural accents (from living in two countries as a kid). So this is her natural accent.

I dated a British girl in college in the US and she was able to switch between her British accent and American accent with ease. She got tired of Americans commenting about her British accent so she started talking like an American to blend in.

I wasn't sure when I first heard about it because we're all used to so much average sex-related TV series whose writers just try too hard with the jokes, but this is worth watching! 😁👌🏻 But I just love smart and smooth humor!

Gillian Anderson was born in Chicago. Within a few months of her birth, the family moved to Puerto Rico for approx eighteen months, then on to London. Where they lived until Gillian was 11. Hence her original English accent. On her return to the U.S., school yard teasing led to the adoption of an American accent and later on her acting career necessitated it. Returning to the U.K. for X Files promo work and stage and film work during the show's hiatus' it first became apparent that she was slipping back into her original accent. She has said that when she is around a Brit, she tends to slip back into it. She might be on a U.S. talk show, speaking with her American accent. If one or more of hosts/guests are British, you will hear her vowels shift. The Nolan brothers (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar) have had a similar experience. Christopher sounds like a English public schoolboy, while Jonathan sounds like a U.S. native. Both English born. One went to the U.S. after their parents separation. The other stayed in England. Like Ms Anderson, Jonathan Nolan decided that life was easier, less painful if he spoke like a U.S. native. Human identity is not a simple binary. Isn't variety wonderful?

@Android army. Hands up here, I have to admit I haven't caught up with season 11. I saw and enjoyed season 10. It's the Anderson/Duchovny chemistry that does it for me. But, and it's a big "butt". I do not think the show should have returned after the fifth season. Which you will remember was shot after the film, X Files:Fight The Future, which it flows into. I think a series of solidly budgeted films every two to three years would have been great. The show dragged on thanks to Fox's short term, quick buck mentality. The actors understandably got bored and the show petered out. Glad to see them re-energised and engaged, acknowledging the passing of time and playing on it, but I'm sorry to say, I'm kinda not that fussed.

That doesn't make any sense at all, there is no conscious learning required in acquiring an accent, it's all autonomous.

@@krashd It depends on the situation, it depends on the person, and it depends on the motives, but it is not exclusively conscious nor is it exclusively subconscious. It can, and often will be, a combination of both.
