Gilles Villeneuve's Ideal F1 Car - Assetto Corsa Experiment

Ойындар

Gilles Villeneuve expressed his 'Ideal Formula 1 Car' just months before his death in March 1982. Today I put that idea to the test to see if it really would be the perfect F1 Car.

I think the McLaren and the NASCAR engine absolutely fit for Gilles - he was a North American with very North American tastes (he was slightly more willing to negotiate the strangeness of Europe than his brother, who had a pretty good opportunity to race in a competitive F3 team but found Italian food, for example, as just too weird ) - I think his connection with Ferrari hides that from us sometimes. Having said that...he could almost be describing his Ferrari from the previous year (Nigel Roebuck's description of his car coming onto the straight at Dijon completely sideways across the road...lap after lap, is both terrifying and hilarious). Nobody, afaik, has ever modelled that car. Can you imagine a full field of those - no torsional rigidity (or that of a wet lettuce, as I think Postlethwaite described it), hardly any downforce and a ton of power that came in like an ON switch. That would be a car to try and get a handle on... Gilles was my earliest hero, I remember being numbed by his accident the day before my 15th birthday.

I use a few programs. Content Manager can help 'unpack' mods and gain access to the files. 3dSimED is what I use to modify the 3d models and swap pieces. I use general graphics programs like Photoshop to edit textures, and lastly text editors to actually change the physics files. Its a fairly time consuming process and a lot of trial and error involved, but the results can be quite fun!

The MoSport track has been changed, the track is not exactly like it was. But what has not changed... is the racing line. You can drive the "old" track and new using exactly the same racing lines... It is wonderfully modified, tiny tweaks here and there, giving just a bit more room off the racing line and increasing safety.

It depends, but with very little downforce, the steering could actually be fairly light. There's no real weight over the front nose in an MR car, so the steering on MR cars are usually pretty delicate if there's not a lot of caster in it.

Fantastic idea. I still have my copy of Autosport magazine where he gave that interview! Very chillingly, in that same interview, he describes how bad the 1982 ground effect cars were at various circuits, and he says Zolder will be a killer, and we know what happened a few weeks later. Gilles would have loved this car..Most of his F1 career was during the ground effect era which was the worst possible time for this magician. With this type of car the rest of the competition apart from Ronnie needn't have bothered turning up. The only thing I would take from the modern era would be the gear shift paddles so drivers could concentrate more on controlling the car. More power would also be better but not a turbo. Despite his heroics in 1981 Gilles hated turbos and wanted instant response. You probably didn't want to use such recent engines but the F1 V10 3 litre engines in 2005 before the following year's rule changes were the most powerful F1 normally aspirated engines ever, with the Honda RA005E the most powerful of all at only a little short of 1000 bhp and much lighter than the 5 litre one you chose. I'm sure if this engine had been around in Gilles' time he would have preferred it. Regarding the car's handling, there's not as much oversteer as I would have expected. I'm sure if Gilles was driving a car like this for real he would have been sliding it around a lot more

I have walked that track many times, beer in hand and good god the nostalgia. I think the striking thing about that track is that on the back straightaway you are right in the woods, much like much of Spa. So wildlife and all that is so common. Lots of foxes and deer. Amazing experiment, thank you for sharing, maybe Jacques will stumble uppon this channel one day and share his thoughts on this :) As a sidenote, I found out I could edit the dds livery files using a simple software like Paint.Net. I actually use that to reduce the size of some livery's, because even using the amazing compression in Content Manager, some liveries are just insanely heavy for my computer. But, in the case of a single livery just like this one, it's nice to be able to give some color and variance to the starting grid. With this car, by only using the "flood fill" function and paint the car with other colors, you can already achieve that. Keep up the great and informative content. Cheers!

During the 1970s there was a McLaren M23 which raced in Australia, first with a Leyland V8 and later with a five litre Chevrolet. Its driver, John McCormack won the Australian Driver’s Championship in it, I think. They were good for between 500 and 520 hp in the day but with terrible reliability. The new S5000 cars, which appeared in the support races for the Australian Grand Prix this year, are preset at 560 hp and as far as I know, they haven’t had an engine blow yet.

.. and just as i was writing a comment about the wheelbase, that even Gilles would've wanted a tad longer car.. he says it.. And i do have an idea. I don't usually do tracks for Assetto Corsa but i could make an exception and you could try driving upside down.

something i discovered recently from reading john barnard's book, was that the ferrari that GV died in was a composite tub, not an aluminium one as i had always assumed. JB basically said even by the time he arrived in italy that ferrari still didnt really understand carbon fibre and that if Gilles had flipped an MP4 instead he would have walked away...same with Pironi i guess...

I'm pretty certain it was an aluminum tub. It was, apparently, the twisting of the tub, as it dug into the sand, that deformed the anchor points for his seat and belts - hence he was ejected from the car. I believe that's one of the reasons they moved away from sand traps. Also, had the car been carbon then it wouldn't have suffered that deformation, that's probably what Barnard was suggesting - and the front of Pironi's car was just ripped open, leaving his legs completely exposed (something similar happened to Tambay's car at Las Vegas in '81 - he was lucky to walk away from that)

@@colinmarkwick141 100% not the case...and that was my original assumption...he basically says in his book that pothelthwaite, ferrari and anyone else for that matter in F1 did not understand the properties or manufacturing processes of carbon fibre properly. thus everything they built with it was less strong than aluminium, not stronger as it should have been. gordon murrary also had some failed attempts at building with it. gravel traps disappearing from tracks did not really begin until the early 2000's. lastly, the car was not even in gravel, it dug into the track side grass after hitting the rear of jochen mass' march...

If you read the wiki page for the 126C it mentions ‘first genuine all monocoque chassis’, ‘honeycomb panels’ and something about it being similar to the previous year’s independent teams (i.e. the MP4). Honey comb aluminium is the metallic part of a carbon fibre composite material...

After that terrible accident it was impossible for me, to watch that race on sunday and I left the circuit late evening with no hope and so many tears in my eyes, that I could hardly follow the road in front 😢 Salut Gilles 🍁🇨🇦🍁
