The original Glory Road had For Gillan Fans Only included for a limited time, and not only was it a bonus vinyl album, but had its own inner sleeve, with even more pics of the band on it.

The footage from Gillingham '82 features some of the greatest live performances I've seen. So much energy, musicianship and attack. Gers' leads are insane.

I saw The Gillan Band at the Reading Rock Festival in 1980 - awesome! I bought, and absolutely loved, Mr Universe when it was first released....I still listen to, and enjoy, it today.

Of all the Purple spin-offs, Gillan was the one that made the most immediate impression on me as a sixteen year old listening to Tommy Vance and just discovering the wide world of rock music. Part of the reason was that Ian was very media friendly, so he popped up a lot on TV and radio, and there were broadcasts of live sets, so there always seemed to be something going on in the band. In a way, they were almost like a cartoon band in that everyone had big and distinct personalities that were also present in their idiosyncratic styles of playing. No other band has ever sounded like them. For me, the heart of the band was ripped out when Bernie Torme left, It was never the same again. It's sad to tjink he might be best remembered for his brief stint with Ozzy. Mick Underwood, I've come to appreciate more over the years as a very tasteful drummer. Obviously he had a great resume behind him even before Gillan. John McCoy just had a presence. Colin Towns was just an amazing musician, as he has proven since, and more a piano player in style than an organist, which made him very unusual in a hard rock band. Sometimes I think I prefer him to John Lord. It goes, Mr Universe, Glory Road, Future Shock for me, although I think the original vinyl of Future Shock with the booklet inside is one of the best packages ever released.

Great show. Edsel issued a limited run Gillan CD box set in 2015 of Mr. Universe through Magic in lp replica cardboard sleeves with booklet and includes the For Gillan Fans Only disc. My favorite is Glory Road; agree with Hack that it is the most consistent, but all are excellent releases. Well done.

As noted, much of Gillan's music was written by Colin Towns, the keyboard player. As well as John McCoy, the bass player. The three guitar players hardly received credit for songwriting, unlike most other hard rock bands. The only post-Gillan band album that sounds like a Gillan album is the McCoy album, Think Hard. That album really is the Lost Gillan album, despite Ian Gillan not singing on it. For an insight on the debut Gillan Japanese album hear the live album by the fusion band Zzebra... Hungry Horse (Live in Germany 1975) that was released late last year. Gillan's future bass player John McCoy is there along with guitarist Steve Byrd, who only plays on the debut before Bernie Torme replaces him.

I live north England and 15 mins south of us in Lancaster was a gig venue that shut down in 1985. I git to see many of the old school rock outfits going through the country there 1979 -84. UFO, Scorpions, Sammy Hagar, Motorhead, Marillion, Iron Maiden, Sweet, Red Noise, Steve Hillage even U2 on the War tour, some new wave outfits etc. My stand out memory was Gillan, Glory Road tour 81, they were killing it. My five. 1, Glory Road---especially as it came with For Gillan Fans Only which except for a couple of joke tracks was nearly as good as the main album. 2. Mr Universe. 3. Future Shock. 4.Double Trouble-studio----this album has really opened up for me like a flower the older i've got. 5. Magic.

Still got all the vinyl - bought on release. Glory road was a wierd release - two lps in a single slipcase (the bonus lp was included in the UK) & mr universe simple LP sleeve - both inexpensive production values on the artwork - then future shock the artwork was luxury on steroids. Quite a change up. Perhaps following success of all the singles.

I was lucky enough to see Gillan twice. They were brilliant live. They were very popular in the UK and for me, at that time compared better to Rainbow, who were in their Joe Lynn Turner days. 1: Glory Road 2: Future Shock 3: Mr Universe 4: Double Trouble 5: Magic I don't have the 'Japanese album' The Edsel collection "Triple trouble Live" is a good 3 cd live set.

Of course, Gillan's best live stuff was two live sets recorded by the BBC in '79 and' 80. Much better than the half-live Double Trouble. Gillan was my first live gig on the Magic tour at the end of '82. At the front of the stage in' 82,seeing my hero from my favourite band Deep Purple was a pivotal moment in my life. Still have my ticket stub. Gillan was (literally) the poor relation of Purple offshoots Rainbow and Whitesnake, but at times was more exciting, dangerous and they took more chances musically. Mr Universe, Future Shock, Glory Road are my favourites due to the wonderful Bernie. Great performances and songwriting.

I have the 2 versions of Mr Universe the original UK press on Arista Acrobat, signed by Ian, Bernie & John with Secret of the Dance, Message in a Bottle, Fighting Man & Dead of the Night, the Austrlian New Zealand version with Ian at Reading on the cover also under the name of Ian Gillan, has 3 different tracks Your Sisters on My List , Sleeping on the Job & Colin Town instrumental Street Theatre, & Move With the Times. Very confusing. But both are worth the admission. And yes Glory Road original which i have, had a bonus album Called For Gillan Fans Only with great comical bits from Ian. Not really have a favorite they are all great. And yes the band was on its last legs with Magic, with Ian agreeing to join Black Sabbath on a drunking pub meeting with Tony and Geezer, the song Because You Lied by John McCoy on one of his Solo albums, was his dig at Ian for breaking up the band as the storie goe's by saying was having trouble with his throat.

Also have the Angel air ones some are better than others but Gillan Tapes vol 1 -3 are a mix of good and not so good, outtakes, alternate versions of songs as well as some live songs, but yes doubt if Ian had anything to do with them but worth having for a complete Gillan fan. Also were 8 7 " singles with b sides not on original albums which were among the bonus tracks on the Edgel remastered. Inc a slightly larger 7 " of MAD witj a wrap aroud comic pretty cool.

It may have already been mentioned but Glory Road in the UK came with the bonus album "For Gillan Fans Only". In some ways was better than the album as it shows the bands sense of humour and Red Watch is a killer track. I was such a huge fan in 1980. My intro to the band was Mr Universe. Straight off the wall in WH Smiths in 1979. Thank you very much. :) My ranking? Nah... you don't need that ;)

Hated IGB, but loved Gillan. Especially live. Gillan’s biggest problem was that their songs were just never quite good as they should’ve been. I can fully understand why they never could crack America. But that’s okay. Just like pre-Slide It In Whitesnake. Loved those albums, but they were just shy of being huge.
