Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

Giles Corey was already 80 years old at the time of the trials.. what a badass

Also, this story is all wrong. The trials started because the little girls claimed to be possessed. And the reasoning for Giles' and Martha's sentencing is false as well. True information is widely available on any google search.

He didnt deny being a witch, he refused to make a plea. Gilty or innocent. Because he knew if he did so that the court would seize his property and land when he died instead of letting it go to his successors. He said more weight so he could be killed on his own terms.
@CrazyRandomLord

Tao of Jester well, the thing about being found innocent was that the court painted itself into a corner. It couldnt undermine all of their actions and be held accountable for any deaths or wrongdoings. If they found anyone innocent when others were already executed on the same type of shallow evidence, then all the accusations could come into question and there after the courts legitimacy. Instead they opted to reimforce the system and justify their actions by pressuring people to confess by offering religeous salvation and pardons if they confessed. They executed the rest. No one was innocent.

Christina Lomeli Very True! I remember, in an interview on The Daily Show, he talked about how they have tons of hours footage, but most of it is unusable because it’s just him and the story tellers bumbling around drunk, so they cut and splice together bits from the discussion to make an episode. Also, he talked about how almost every time a few days later, the person will email him profusely apologizing and pleading with him not to include certain bits, which also plays a part in making the episodes!

So I guess you might have people who are very reluctant to be sheriff or you have to order one from a different state who doesn't know about the curse. I suggest tearing the town apart to see if there's any hexes on the court house. Or pray to God to forgive that town of it's wrong doings in the past and cleanse the land of evil. Because I'm sure God wasn't happy when innocent blood was shed there.

Gruesome but it wasn't a reason for the end of the Trials. The end came when one of the girls accused a Judge's wife of being a witch. So the Court said OK, now you've gone too far.

@variansloth
4 жыл бұрын
yeah women could read long before then. the first novel was by a woman, and priestess were the ones to record several events in some cultures. so you're right, no respect for them. an educated woman would learn there was no real point in serving a husband for her whole life and seek out more and it just wasn't wanted
@pivinne5536
4 жыл бұрын
White Recluse some people could read but literacy would continue to be very poor for a long time. Only the upper class could read for most of history (as well as priests) and it wouldn’t be shocking if the illiterate people of Salem thought she was reading the “devil’s works” or something akin to that as they had no idea what the writing meant. Literacy wasn’t a huge thing until the late Victorian period, as schools were expensive until charities started picking up the slack and eventually governments stepped in.
@strawberrys0da714
4 жыл бұрын
the problem was that it wasn't a book accepted by the Puritans, I think. They could only read books that had something to do with the religion.
Giles Corey did not accuse his wife of anything --- the only thing he was reported as saying was that his wife sure did like reading books more than his two previous wives had ever done.

Are you actually implying that this is not an accusation? Flashback to this, husband knows that it is frowned upon for a woman to read, as does everyone else. A few fun facts: Nathaniel Hawthorne, a famous American author, who’s most famous work was The Scarlet Letter, was born in Salem. And is actually a direct descendant of John Hathorne (Nathaniel added the W to the name to separate himself from the family name) who was one of the judges in the Salem Witch Trials. His works were often anti-Puritan due to his families past that he found shameful.

The true curse of Salem was apparently that everyone was afflicted with violent hiccups!
Note, because hey, how much accuracy can we demand of someone this intoxicated, lol: you didn't get hanged automatically if you were accused of witchcraft in Salem. You got hanged if you were accused but you plead innocent and were found guilty. In that case you were hanged and *all your property was confiscated* If you plead guilty and repented, your life would be spared, but you *also lost all your property* Corey did not want his family to be left destitute, which was probably a big motivator for him to not enter ANY plea and thereby refuse to enter this legal process even under torture. It was a brave and clever legal move in a desperate situation. It meant his family received his money and land when he died, instead of it being confiscated and sold off by the government. Supposedly his last words were, "more weight." (It is suspected that a big underlying element of the witch trials became people accusing neighbors because they wanted the chance to get their desirable land. You find this theory, and the idea of Giles Corey's curse, echoed in the House of the Seven Gables, a classic 19th century novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, himself a descendant of a Salem witch trials judge.)
