@@gabe2349 first off it’s“ability scores” , second off it’s only the physical ones that make you immediately die. When the mental ones hit zero you’re just helpless - at least in 3.5 . In 5e there’s no rules about what happens except for what specific monster attacks do, but most tables I’ve played at use the 3.5 rule(replacing ‘helpless’ with ‘incapacitated’ since conditions work a little different in 5e). But that wasn’t even my actual point, a character with -1 constitution has a -6 modifier to hp, and since NPCs don’t get full hp at level one, even if his hit dice were d12s he’d have a maximum of 0. That’s 5e RAW (I do believe it was later errated that you get at least 1 hp regardless of modifiers per level though).

People tend to think of (and use) HP the wrong way. It's actually meant to be an accumulation of several different things. And isn't actually an indicator of "Health" strictly speaking. ("Hit" points, not "Health" points.) It's a combination of stamina, and your body's ability to function efficiently. It's more accurate to say that it's a measure of how well you can deal with an enemy's strike without taking a lethal hit. For one, people tend to forget about the "bloodied" status. You don't actually start taking real damage to your character's body (depending on DM interpretation and context) until you're at half health. It's more correct to say that you're blocking the strike at a physical cost before you lose half your HP. (Losing stamina, feeling sore, etc.) With each successful hit taken against you, you're essentially tracking a combination of injuries, loss of stamina, mental stress, and your character's ability to continue defending themselves from successful strikes against them. (Can I still dive out of the way of that incoming fireball? Is my arm going to function well enough to prevent this next strike from hitting anything vital?) A guy with 5HP isn't less "healthy" (strictly speaking) than someone with 50 hit points and someone with 100HP isn't more "healthy" than them. Gilear being a humanoid with 5HP is basically just describing someone who's kinda out of shape, and doesn't have the combat experience necessary to understand how best to defend themselves, and they are inefficient in a fight for that reason. AC tracks how difficult you are to hit without incurring some physical cost. HP tracks how tired and damaged you are, as well as your physical fitness (stamina), and how efficiently you can move to avoid taking lethal damage.
