They changed the rules to open up spacing cuz teams like the Knicks, Heat, and Pacers were having 78-75 scores. The 2004 Finals was the Nets vs Spurs, a mostly defensive finals and its ratings were in the garbage. The game changed with the Suns and Nash.

First off most of those Euro guys are playing against Pros at 14 so they have learned the game. Second, every one of these so called good NBA players are 1 and done so how the hell are they learning anything in Collage? And lastly there's only a handful of 2 way players in the NBA in pretty much every Era so that's a non starter

The reason the NBA started to shop for foreign players was because you had a bunch of guys coming into the NBA straight out of high school or only spending a year or two in college that didn't know how to play the game cause their fundamentals were horrible that's why teams started to look outside the United States for players that's also why the rules change cause this guys couldn't shot the ball so the league had to make it easier for players to score

I remember years ago (was it around 10 or 12 years ago🤔, I'm not sure), I either read an article or heard on the radio or saw on tv, that as far as top white players in the NBA, there were possibly more recognizable, well-known white players from Europe than white American-born players. And the story was about how many European players reported racist comments from black NBA players toward them, such as "this is our game" , "you don't belong here", etc. Black players outwardly being very hostile and racist toward ths white European players was the jist of the story. But it got very little coverage. If the shoe was on ths other foot we all know it would finallt erupt into an orgy of violence, beatings, murders, rape, burning buildings in every American city over 250,000

Lastly, I hope everyone playing the race card realizes that have of the European players are not what we call "white" in America lol. The big reason there is no defense now is because of the warriors and mainly steph curry with the 3 point shot. Everyone loves to say how curry changed the game because of his shooting. Black players get 1 point for free throws and 2 for inside the line and 3 for outside the line, BUT NON BLACK PLAYERS get 2 points for free throws, 3 points for inside the line and 4 points for 3-pointers.

There’s 130 “foreign” / International born players in the NBA. A record. Not all European born. There were European players, foreign players who were plenty good enough and great competitive players ~ Drazen, Sarunas… two very impactful players. I’m a hoops aficionado, or at least I was until the 2010’s. The “Evolution “ of athleticism, skill (individual) have replaced team play. I’m not a believer in the idea that players are far more athletic, or more skilled. ~ that’s a completely different argument. Non athletic guys can be excellent team defenders, but the team game is not emphasized, defense isn’t emphasized enough in American Basketball. Fundamentals are gone. Team play isn’t valued. Interesting the teams, and players that are successful play “team” ball and are among the best teams in defensive efficiency ~ they give EFFORT, and they compete. It’s only 8-10 teams who are worth watching on a consistent basis. Good coaching, team oriented players, who give effort and compete.

Both Gilbert Arenas and Whitlock are wrong. The NBA was an unfair sport in the 90s. The idea of illegal defenses was it was a matter of time before they had to remove it. Once they did that, it benefited players thst could actually shoot the basketball. Players like Curry, Klay, Mitchell etc benefited massively from the spacing. With the floor spaced and defenses allowed to move freely (which wasn't allowed during illegal defenses era), you saw less physical in the paint defense. European players (more so international players) used fundamentals to get buckets as opposed to being a bully in the paint. They then also realised that the 3 is worth more than the 2. So Shaq can hit 4 2s but as long as Bertans can hit 3 3s out of his 4 shots, then thats great. Defenses are not played the same way anymore due to increased spacing. Hand checking honestly still happens but it also wont make much difference still the difference mainly is the pace of the game and spacing.
