Gil’s criteria for voting: Everyone is fair game. No grandfathering in. Original 50 out! Championships are TEAM awards. I’m looking at personal stats and championships are the cherry on top All NBA > All Star No predicting or fast-forwarding. No future success based on present stats. Stats are CURRENT stats.

T-Mac was arguably the best player in the world for about half a decade. He was 7-time all star AND 7-time all-NBA, plus a scoring champ... That's not enough? I feel like being top 3 for 6 or 7 years is just as significant as being top 15 for, say, 12 years. In the same vein, one could make an argument that being an MVP -- i.e., THE (supposedly) best player for a given year -- should automatically qualify someone barring some extreme unforeseen circumstance (i.e., only having 2 or 3 healthy seasons before an injury). Anybody who's a multi-time MVP, it's a no-brainer. The argument for a dude like Mikan is that he was _far and away_ the best player of his era. It was a crappy era but he was clearly that dude. He shot 40%, sure, but _offense as we know it literally hadn't been invented yet._ People weren't even taking jump shots. Audiences were throwing batteries and stuff... games were played in _cages!_ If you're not going to ding guys for shooting insane percentages now when you can't hand check them, don't ding George for playing during an era where people could body check you and it wasn't even a foul.

To be fair, the way Gil is determining his list, is a great objective method which could eventually turn subjective. I think taking the names away shows the accolades on their own which is great. Then, the nuance can come from the remainder of whoever is from the pool.

Interesting watch but Gilbert's analysis is still flawed. He's taking about career numbers which rewards longevity. But then uses a metric like all NBA and won't account for how many other good players were vying for those all NBA slots. Patrick Ewings all NBA selections at center are more valuable than Dwight Howards when you look at the caliber of centers playing in those time periods. Dwight Howard deserved to be in, I'm reacting to Gilbert saying Howard would go ahead of Ewing.

The Nfl after every season does a top 100 list of current players voted by the NFL players themselves. The NBA should consider jumping on that idea and doing something exactly like that. Maybe do a top 30 since they have way less players per roster. Would be great to view who the players themselves feel are the best in the league coming into every season.

  • @SportsSpeak73

My issue with the top 75 list is that the top 50 encompassed the first 50 years. Fair enough. That said, if you don't revisit it and compile an entirely new list then they shouldn't have been able to reach back and add guys that were omitted from the original 50. If they were going to grandfather people in then slots 51-75 should've only been for guys who hadn't played at least 8-10 years when the top 50 dropped. Dominique should've absolutely been on the top 50 but once he was snubbed he shouldn't have been added. Reggie Miller, Gary Payton, & Dennis Rodman shouldn't have been in consideration either. That's 4 spots for people like Tmac, Dwight, & whoever. That said, Dominique & Payton probably should've been named instead of Parrish & Lenny Wilkens in the first place. For me, I'd take out Parrish, Rodman, & Lenny Wilkens and add in TMac, Dwight, & Hill.
