Thanks for that list, it's nice to see so many inexpensive tools and gadgets for under £20. I'll link it to the wife and kids in the hope of not getting any more novelty socks or offensive T-Shirts for Christmas and having something useful instead. I'll buy myself some pastry brushes as they will be super useful and peeling off dried wood glue is nearly as satisfying as popping bubble wrap.

Things similar to the Messfix measuring stick with the built in tape have been around for decades in the surveying business. Takes me back to a sphincter tightening job I did with a mate, holding onto a really long one of those, with one end in a full swimming pool and a thunderstorm coming in as photos were being taken for an architect to get building approval for an extended roof. Luckily we finished before the storm arrived over the property.

I can see that measuring stick coming in very handy for when I go to measure up for my installs and like you say it would pay for itself over time. Takes me back to the early 80’s when I was an apprentice and all the old boy carpenters would use a rod (story stick is just a too new fangled word and should be banned immediately)…😀

The 2 priceless gifts that you can’t buy - experience and patience. Once you’ve got the basic, accurate tools, then everything else are nice-to-haves. You don’t need them but you might like them. Those priceless gifts require time and mental training (at least patience did for me). Get out in the shop without the pressure of having to make something by some defined date and just practice - maybe chiselling, maybe accurate hand sawing, maybe all the features of the domino. Just ask the other half for the precious gift of 3 hours every weekend of being allowed to play.

Interesting as always. For taking temporary notes I can recommend bambook: spiral notebooks where the pages are thin whiteboards that you write on with an appropriate marker and erase again when no longer needed. They come in different sizes and the type of “page” can be chosen (empty, lines, squares, dots).

I have an old Shark Saw which is like a slightly larger version of that Olfa knife/saw combo. Had it for years and it's very useful but not sure if you can still get them. Also Facom do several versions of the micro bit ratchet, one of which has a locking flexible head. They are a bit more premium price tag, but really good for tight access jobs.

  • @tlangdon12

The Wera micro ratchet is the best one. I needed one for a job, and I broke two different models (including the one in Peter's video) trying to find one that was strong enough. Only the Wera worked. There are videos of it undoing car lug nuts that have been tightented to 80Nm of torque!

The measuring stick is interesting, I hadn't seen one of those before. How do you feel about the cheap and cheerful laser measure? Usually working along and needing to measure awkward spaces I find them very useful, I sometimes double check with a tape but it seems to come in pretty accurate (usually too accurate and I need to take a bit off to accommodate a wonky wall 😂).

I also have a laser and find it to be slow to use, especially when making multiple measurements to find eg the lowest point of a ceiling in a recess or alcove, or the narrowest width. I don’t need each individual measurement, just the smallest number and with a laser I have to write that down. 🤷‍♂️ First world problems and all that. 👍

I once had some secondary glazing fitted to my very 'airy' first flat in South London, Peter. The guy (from Everest) used something similar to measure the aperture, but from memory it was something that was a box section, not a round tube. It expanded and reduced within the window frame aperture and gave precise measurements, but I think from memory, he also used it to note any angle as well?! I might remember this wrong. I asked him where I could buy one from and he said, 'You can't, they don't sell them'. I've long lusted after one of those. Maybe someone can enlighten me what they were. Maybe they were in fact your Messfix tool. The glazing fitted absolutely perfectly.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    6 ай бұрын

The green lines are supposed to be easier to see, generally. The Enventor red line laser is only rated to 15m, which suggests to me that the optics aren’t that great ie you’ll get the line spreading along its length. If you’re only using it over shorter distances it should be fine, but for an extra 8 quid or so the green line 25m is the one I’d recommend. 👍

HI peter, I have been working for a few months on a 3D printed product for MFT bench tops, 3D printed magnetic plugs for dog holes. Would you be interested in taking a look at them?

Hi Dean. Happy to take a look and provide feedback, but no promises that I'll put it in front of an audience. Don't know if you're aware but Benchdogs.co.uk do a similar product - I featured it in the previous gift list, or maybe the one before that? Shoot me a message through the website at 10minuteworkshop.com, OK? 👍

Such YT content presents difficulties for me. In the old days, I could leave some brochures lying around in "what can I buy him?" season... Oh well, we can all do with another pair of slippers.

@@10MinuteWorkshopMy search history would already make Satan cringe, and I was curious so I looked it up. It's a reference to Will Ferrell's racing driver character in Talladega Nights (never seen it) who doesn't know what to do with his hands while being interviewed. I can see where edgar0517 is coming from and don't see any negative intention. There is a momentary resemblance to your idiosyncratic mannerisms, but the movie character is your polar opposite, awkward and stilted whereas your distinctive gestures come across as thoughtful, outgoing and expressive. Hope this hasn't just made it weird, or maybe I just did by saying that. 🙃 Anyway, I like everything about your presentation style, and now I want one of those stupid measuring poles even though it's no bloody use to me...

A very British list with a laser that starts at 3mm and ends at a 1/4 inch……… The domino height stop looks brilliant, can’t justify buying a 3D printer just for that……. 🤔

Actually a nod towards our American cousins; and you don’t need at 3D printer - just need to know someone who has one! 😂
