Gift Academy Inc Mock Checkride with Mary Latimer full length

Mary Latimer is a former Designated Pilot Examiner and in this video aims to give an idea of how the ground portion of a checkride will likely flow. No two checkrides are the same, but in general they are to the same standards set by the ACS. www.girlsinflight.org

Thanks for the upload, this really helped! Don't talk too much but wait for visual cues from the DPE, if you are talking and explaining and he is satisfied they will move onto the next prompt when you pause, if you pause and the DPE is looking at you being silent or nudging you on to keep talking that means you may have missed a topic from a list. If the DPE ask you the same question again but phrases it different, they want you to re-explain your previous answer because it was either INCORRECT or poorly explained so don't say the same answer! Good luck fellow aviators!

I didn’t like the answer that she gave with the *L equating that it’s pilot controlled lighting. It’s technically wrong. It says on the sectionals “Lighting Limitations Exist, refer to Chart Supplemental”. Yes, 9 out of 10 times, it’ll be pilot controlled lighting, but there’s that one airport to where you have to make an arrangement to have the lights on with the airport management. Imagine your surprise (and that sinking feeling) when you don’t check and you’re clicking frantically on the mic and the lights aren’t coming on.

I too was scrolling along and was just browsing and thought I might watch a few minutes of this. I watched it all as well as a good refresher. It even made me pull the book out and look stuff up! lol As pilots after many years of flying off and on (in my case) I think we forget more than we remembered back in the day for the check ride! ........... However .... I am puzzled at one little point though, at 22:03 she mentions Flight following and the Examiner mentions ATC is not going to give you an assigned heading or altitude with FF unless in the Bravo. I was coming back from a cross country the other day from the east Texas area into an airport south of DFW. We were not in the Bravo. ATC was giving us assigned headings and altitude changes. They were lowering us in stages, and at one time told us to fly direct to Lancaster then to destination. They were stepping us down and around to remain clear of the bravo. Sometimes they clear you through, sometimes they don't. But I find that Flight Following (ATC) will give you assignments which is contradictory to what she said at 22:24 in the video where she says they don't. She did mention "when" would it be a legal requirement.... § 91.159 VFR cruising altitude or flight level. Except while holding in a holding pattern of 2 minutes or less, or while turning, each person operating an aircraft under VFR in level CRUISING FLIGHT MORE THAN 3,000 feet above the surface SHALL MAINTAIN the appropriate altitude or flight level prescribed below, unless otherwise authorized by ATC: (a) When operating below 18,000 feet MSL and - (1) On a magnetic course of zero degrees through 179 degrees, any odd thousand foot MSL altitude + 500 feet (such as 3,500, 5,500, or 7,500); or (2) On a magnetic course of 180 degrees through 359 degrees, any even thousand foot MSL altitude + 500 feet (such as 4,500, 6,500, or 8,500). This is good stuff. I'm really glad I watched this video it made me explore answers.. She had good probing questions ...

I get this when I am also flying near the Bravo and or around it, because its more of the regional approach keeping everyone safe, but outside of that Flight Following does not assign altitudes or headings, but do suggest for avoidances of traffic and airspace, but even in the Bravo area may also noted they suggested the altitude at or above or below usually not a set in stone altitude. but recently I noticed an uptick in ATC providing more services than used to now not as busy as were. but in general they are correct that flight following does not assign, but often suggests

If you are doing a Twin Engine Check Ride please make sure your "Cross feed Fuel Levers" are fully closed as one tank may suck fuel from the other causing possible fuel starvation ! One CAA Examiner distracted me by talking about the new Secretary at the Flying Club(she was gorgeous) then slightly opened a cross feed lever and I pretended not to notice ,1 minute later I did my "touch" drills reds blues greens anything that moved and reset the cross feed lever ! He also had a habit of removing circuit breakers to simulate oil pressure loss .....so be ready for it everybody ! NEVER reduce Manifold Pressure without adjusting RPM Levers either as it's a FAIL ! I never did this though but nearly upon deliberate distraction by CAA Examiner.

Mary has not taught or did multi engine checkrides, But I (her daughter tamara) do and hope to become my own examiner. Very few private initials would be in a multi anyways.. But very familiar with tricks to "fail" etc... I was sneaky... most of those wouldn't be allowed as an examiner lol.

This interview felt so real I became intimidated. I have no flying experience. I haven't even started flight school. But the way this interview was going, it felt like the interviewee (future pilot) have been training for years. My question now is, how soon can a person with zero experience in aviation obtain the knowledge to pass "check-ride?"

Some flight schools advertise as little as 2 weeks. There is a LOT to know. But, there are a LOT of resources. A lot of the knowledge comes from just doing it. I’d say if you focus full time on it a good goal is 4-6 months.

A few months. Don't worry about the fact that there's so much to learn - just learn it. Take a few hours every day to just engrave that knowledge. Treat the studying as a job and very soon you'll realize just how far you've progressed.

Nice video. It’s a shame that flying has got so complicated. Got my private in 1976 . A c150 was $15 and the flight instructor was $5. Examiner quizzed me about 20 minutes and we went flying. One of his questions was what makes the seasons winter, spring, summer fall. I didn’t know. Most pilots at my airline don’t know either.

yes Dan G is correct. The earth rotates on a tilted axis. This tilt in conjunction with the earth’s orbit around the sun cause the earth surface to be exposed to more direct rays from the sun at different times of the year. Amazing how when you look toward the sun in six months we will be on the other side of it and will have traveled about 470 million miles.
