Really great instrument that one......as predominantly a stat player ( not doing a great deal of high gain parts), I find a P90 guitar as my other guitar for stage work sits really well, it could do the cleaner single coil sounds if I break a string, but can also do a range of mid gain stuff / classic rock tones, without having to mess with pedalboard or amp settings during a gig.in fact my P90 semi hollow Tstyle that I built myself is very nearly my number one go-to at the moment, even over my Fender, and its the versatility of the P90s that does it for me,.... not surprised by the way that your SG can handle jazz too....bet it sounded great for it👍🎸😀

Great video ,i own a 2001 Gibson SG special “Pete Townsend” signature model and its the best Gibson guitar I’ve owned . Being 23 years old this year i consider it vintage . It’s my dream guitar. Keep rocking brother .

Great! I played a lot of Sg's since 1981. I kept the best one I owned: 1961 SG Special, I bought it for $550 in 1994. I sold mostly all my SG's since. Plugged into my 1969 Fender Vibrolux Reverb, it is just amazing.

Thanks, Harry. If you really want a vintage SG, you can definitely find one on reverb.com. Budget dependent, of course. Just go to the site and enter the year and model you want. Right now, there are at least 4 of the “1968 gibson sg special” and 4 of the 67s. Wide price range, from around $2600 up to $7500. Cheers!

You're so right. The tone isn't too thick, but it still has a nice attack. I love the sound of it on Tommy. I notice (at least live) Townsend uses more strats.

Glad you like the SG tone, Mat. I also loved when Townshend played the SG as his main guitar. He switched to a Gretsch at the time of Who's Next and he's played other guitars since... but I go back to Tommy as the quintessential Who guitar sound...at least for me!

I’ve always loved SG Special mainly because of Pete Townsend. I play in a punky pop band influenced by early Who. I’m getting one of these P-90 wonders in black.

The PT sound of Live At Leeds is epic. It’s the reason I’ve had more SG’s than I can count through the years (like 6, none vintage). Right now have the deep burgundy Special- current model w compensated wrap bridge. Good guitar.

The 60s SGs are really better quality guitars than the ones Gibson makes now...The Honduras Mahogany really resonates in those - and I've noticed the 69 I had, sported a slightly thicker body than moden ones. Those are incredible sounding guitars.. especially through a clean Hiwatt...

@@harrykadaras9459 I agree, Harry. I've played a few new ones, and they didn't knock me out. Seems like the mid-to-late 60s was an SG sweet spot.

I just got a 66 SG Special. It is an early 66 because it is still a small guard. It is hands down the cleanest and best playing and sounding guitar I own. It was in a friend's father in laws house for years in the case. Lesson: Be nice to your friends. You never know.

I have owned 5 different late sixties specials. In 1987 traded for one in mint condition and that has been the one I used ever since. If I had to choose between a 59 burst or a batwing special I swear I would pick the sg.

I own a "68 SG Special that I bought used in 1971 for $100 + $10 for the case. It already had a Pete Townsend set up (still does), was pretty beat up and had the Gibson back-of-the-neck split at the headstock (since repaired). It has never been re-fretted, has crazy good action and is still my most prized possession. I played it through a Deluxe Reverb till the amp burned up.

Hi Robert, My SG Special looks just like yours. Purchased used in 1980. A couple years ago I had G.G. look at it, he says 1966(mystery serial #s at Gibson for a couple years). I had grovers and similar bridge put on when i purchased it. I have had regrets about that but your video helps me feel better....stays in tune and i do love it. Thanks

I’d love to see your SG Special, Mike. They sound like twins! As far as having regrets about modifications go, this type of SG is still somewhat of a bargain in light of how it plays and sounds. So play on with no regrets!

I have three SGs: Gibson '61w/Maestro Vibrola reissue, Epiphone Prophecy SG w/Fluence pups, Epiphone SG Classic w/P90s (an SG Special). They're all an adventure and super! However the absolute surprise is how good sounding the least expensive Epiphone SG Special is. The P90's are just killer. I have a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Special with P90s as well. The Epiphone pups are more alive without a doubt. Overshadowing the vintage instrument. Astounding what is produced at moderate cost in this era. Great presentation - thanks

In home or live set-up, Epiphones' are great. But on stage, it doesn't cut through as Gibson; no punch and hazy.

There is something special about the special . More than an understatement. The guitar you own rocked the end of a decade with a voice that is unlike any other.....nice guitar man, wish i owned it

Thanks for the compliments. It's funny, the SG Special is one of the lowest priced vintage Gibsons out there. Mine has so many battle scars, so its market value is limited...and somehow that makes it even MORE special. On top of everything else, it's an undervalued underdog!

@@imannonymous7707 You're so right. When I did my video about Nippon Gakki Yamaha acoustics about 3 years ago, they were a bargain. Today not so much. Same for my features about vintage Harmony guitars. What were once snubbed as cheap student guitars are now coveted and worthy of expensive neck resets, etc. As much as it strains our wallets, I actually appreciate the trend because I love it when old guitars get treated with love and resurrected.

Can't believe it's 54 years old!

I had a heavily chopped '52 Les Paul as a teenager and could easily get that Clapton sound... no pedals through a Traynor Bass Master. Twenty years later I got a '59 Flametop Les Paul, so could compare the two. I thought the '52 sounded better. Now, 1/2 century later I have a '63 SG Special & '63 Standard (the '59 is long gone). They both sound and play terrific, but the P90s still win my ear and heart.

Great guitars. I have ordered a late '60s ala "Townshend" SG special from a store with Gibson's Made to Measure Program. 12 -18 month wait apparently!

Hi Robert, Thank you for responding to my comment on one of your other videos (A Rock opera DIED for this! - WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN), It's awesome to see that you read the comments and respond to them. Thank you. I haven't even watched this video yet but right off the bat I have something to say just for fun.. IF I had a Gibson SG special 68' I'd reach for it because that's what I saw Pete Townshend play so many times and even in the studio recording Tommy. That alone has always made me want to own one and have the pleasure of reaching for it. I hope some day I can do that!

I watched it, Beautiful Guitar, Jealous as usual. I think a few things that are special about the SG Special is like you said the action is so low and there is no humming or rattling and clearly from your personal Guitar it is evident that the materials used are of great quality considering the frets have not worn down to the degree that they need to be replaced. I have played a few Gibson les pauls live and my first guitar was an Epiphone Les Paul. The one time I did play an SG I noted that the action was gorgeous and that the P90's seemed to capture the Mid ranges far clearer without distorting than most other guitars. That gives you the ability to play very clean clear tone, Warm Jazz, and of course Hard Rock like 'Live at Leeds'. In the case of The Who I think this worked very well because Entwhistle was so loud and heavy, Despite being a bass on 'All Trebble", it's still a bass and a far lower gauge than a guitars low E. Townshend was able to Crack in and out of passages and be clearly heard over John. With a simple flick of the pickup selector he could play clean cleartone and dive-bombing windmills in all their glory. Probably most importantly about this particular guitar, Is that it is perhaps the most comfortable electric guitar to play. The neck is wide, Shallow, Low action and wide open for the high notes. It's relatively light, Thin, and fits nicely on the thigh in the classical position. It is hands down unquestionably my favorite guitar. Thanks Rob, I'm going to watch it again.

I tend to like the sound of P-90s at full volume, or close to it, both for clean or distorted. How about you? And what’s the meaning of mtw?

1972 was probably the last time that guitar was reasonably priced.

Check this out, @FortessofShred. I just looked on Reverb.com and there are two '68 SG Specials exactly like mine available for $3,000 and $3,150. I used an inflation calculator to enter the $350 my brother paid for it new in 1968. In 2024, the equivalent dollar value is $3,164. In other words, they're the same price/value today as they were new. Of course, $350 seemed like a princely sum back in '68!

Give me a gibson every time. Isn't epiphone made by gibson? I Like both.

Epiphone has been a Gibson brand since 1957. In 1970, they move Epiphone manufacturing off-shore, and often the build quality was inferior to Gibsons. So Epiphone became Gibson's budget brand. Fast-forward to today and things are getting mixed up. Epiphone electrics built off-shore are often higher quality than their US-made Gibson counterparts. And now Epiphone has a handful of acoustic models made in the US - to very high standards. Both legendary brands, for sure.

Who said nobody likes gibson .I wonder why all the guys who can afford any guitar have gibson or fender? I can't remember anyone off hand that uses a epiphone.i had one they are great,!

Hey Frank. Many pro players complain that new Gibsons are mediocre quality and overpriced. But vintage Gibsons are, and always will be, very well-loved. The irony is that new Epiphones are less expensive that Gibsons, but often better-built. (It's just that they're made overseas, not in the USA.) My daughter has a recent Epiphone Les Paul. Beautiful guitar.

Very interesting but how is the intonation? Always had a fear of guitars like this because the lack of setup features.

Intonation is perfect with 10s or higher. It has a truss rod and my 68’s bridge is mounted on two huge screws that allow height and angle adjustment.

I have a 68 SG Special too... It is factory Out of Phase wired in the middle position. So I was wondering if yours is out of phase as well?

Hi Robert , the two Les Pauls I have picked up were heavy iam guessing Sg's are lighter , also humbuckers can sound to thick at times so I like the idea of P90s and also Ezy playability , so thanks for your video and food for thought .

You’re right, Jack. One thing the SG has on the Les Paul is significantly lighter weight. Much easier on the shoulder during long gigs while standing. Ease of play between well setup SGs and LP should be comparable, with exception of the incredible high neck access of the SG. I have an LP that’s also nearly effortless to play, but it has humbuckers, so it serves different sonic purposes, and I wouldn’t want to play it on a 3-hour gig because I’d need to incorporate the cost of a chiropractor visit into my gig expenses. LOL.

An SG special is ticking a lot of boxes for me , shorter scale also , cheaper and a little less common than a Les Paul , sounding like a good contrast to my Strat . Thanks for your feedback , really enjoy your videos ✌️

@@Jack-zr2kv Yeah. If you're looking for something "thicker" than a Strat that plays as easily as a Strat, and sounds about 1/2 as heavy as a humbucker, an SG with P-90s could be a great choice.

Tone quest!

I have a Gibson SG Special - great guitar for recording and home playing - looks amazing too...BUT, its awful to play standing up and at gigs. The strap button placement is flawed and makes the guitar not only neck dive but lean forward. You have to fight it which means you will be pulling your chords out of tune and be exhausted by the end of your bands set. Dont believe me? Play a 1 hour set with this guitar then switch to Fender or Schecter USA for the next set....you will think you died and went to heaven!

Thanks, P-BIZ. so interesting… I played this SG for literally 20 years. Hundreds of gigs. My 100% effective solution was to use a strap with an acoustic-style tie behind the nut. It spread the weight of the guitar evenly and eliminated neck dive, too. Never felt like the guitar was leaning forward either! Funny that I originally used the tie because it was an old strap that hadn’t been tooled for an upper strap button…

I own a 61 sg les paul with PAF humbuckers and love it however it does not go into that feral cat territory that my 68 sg special does.

Not sure what you're getting at, Ronny. I love my '68 SG. Just 4 years ago, one just like mine was available for $2500 or so. Now on Reverb.com, they start at $3500 and go up from there. Quite a fast rise in value.

Why you put the Grovers on? They make the Guitar neckheavy and look ugly.

Good question, Lorenzo. Those Grovers were installed in 1978! Playing a gig that year, I swung around and whacked my keyboard player's Leslie speaker with one of the original plastic tuner buttons and it broke right off. My local guitar shop at the time (in Grand Rapids, Michigan, not far from the Gibson Kalamazoo factory) said, let's get rid of those cheap Gibson plastic tuners and switch to all-metal. Truth be told, this SG was just a professional tool for me at the time, so I didn't think about it much. More durable meant "better" to me. The Grovers felt kike a big upgrade, with a more precise gearing ratio. And they've been perfectly reliable ever since. I never noticed any change in the guitar's balance. As far as being ugly, that's your call! Thanks for watching and saying hello.

Watching Townsend smash SG's always pissed me off. Such a dumb thing to do.

I never got it, Charles. Pete was acting like a rebel punk, but it was obvious to me (who had saved for months to buy my own SG) that only a rich guy with money to burn could afford a new guitar for every show. So to me, even though I loved his music, he came off like a spoiled brat!

I bought an SG Special in 2003 brand new.The frets and pickups are junk

The Gibson standard tribute Sg was Gibsons best shame they have recently discontinued it..paid $1,300 it has the same pickups same electronics same hardware as the Gibson standard..the standard tribute Sg reminds me very much of the old School Sgs of the late 1960s and early 70's yes there are some differences but very close to the old School Sgs..

No one wants Gibson anymore it's all epiphone now

That's true for new guitars. But there's nothing like a vintage Gibson. Early Epiphone SGs were made in Korea (by Samick) and came out in the late 80s. So if you want a 60s or 70s SG, it's gonna be a Gibby.

I totally hear where you're coming from, and I'm excited that so many inexpensive guitars are now perfectly built, set up and Plek'd. They are remarkably consistent and incredible for the money. But in my experience, there CAN BE such a thing as the "soul" of an instrument. Hand-crafting is a hit-or-miss affair. But when a guitar is crafted with an extraordinary combination of carefully selected tonewoods and genuinely expert craftsmanship, the result can be stunning. IMHO, those instruments exist in a place beyond structural perfection and into what I can only (inadequately) call "passion" or "love." The differences tend to be much more obvious with acoustic guitars than electric. Perfectly machine-built acoustic guitars often lack the special "something" that creates musical magic. It may seem like I'm a snob, but I'm not - I often rave about "cheap" guitars that amaze me and that I play and enjoy. And for whatever reason, those older guitars are almost always the ones that inspire me to write new songs. Maybe it's just what I'm used to, but my vintage axes always seem to "have something to say," as if they possess some built-in wisdom.

I like my 2022 Gibson Les Paul bourbon burst and my 2023 Les Paul special in tv yellow just fine.
