I’ve done both. I got my Gibson Les Paul Studio and SG special for around $1300. I also paid around that for my Epiphone Adam Jones Les Paul and Bonamassa ES-335. So I have two Epiphones and two Gibsons which cost about the same and I enjoy playing my higher end Epiphones as much as my lower end Gibsons. So I was okay with what I paid. They aren’t interchangeable but each has it’s strengths. The nitro finish and fret nibs feels nicer on the Gibsons but the Epiphones have unique specs and finishes that can’t be found on a lower end Gibson.

I did almost exactly what you did. I bought a brand new Gibson studio lp and an sg special them I grabbed an epiphone aj, but my second epi is a prophecy extura. All 4 are probably on par with each other but I prefered the neck and pickups on my epis so I got rid of my Gibsons. This guy is basing his recommendation off of resale value. I don't think you should be buying an instrument you want based off resale. But that's just me.

Several bench marks have been reached including recently reaching our highest production month ever, an internal reduction of departmental reject’s and repairs to less than 5%, a reduction in backorders from over a year to one month and growing our production capabilities to include high end solid top acoustics and other key models such as the Casino, Les Paul Custom Signature models and others.

Gibson's semi-hollowbodies like the ES-335 and ES-339 have tops and backs constructed of layers (either 3 or 4) of maple veneer. My understanding is that the veneers are assembled in successive cross-grain layers with the top layer having its grain longitudinal to the length of the guitar. The tops and backs are approximately 1/4" in thickness after layup.

I think spending $1500 on an Epi is without question too much money. I don’t care if it’s a signature or not. The Greeny thing might have been cool a year ago, now it’s redundant. Don’t get me wrong, I am a Green and Moore fan, not Kirk sorry. I understand that Epiphone business wise needs to fill in the space so to speak. How about Gibson making USA guitars starting at 1199 or so. As far as other options on spending $1500? More expensive I would go for an SG Standard with batwing guard for $1799, SG ‘61 Standard at $1999. You have now custom colors to choose from. Less price? You have the Tributes at $1299 USA made if you can still get one. The Studio line is nice and still USA made. I can go on, but no for Kirk and Gibson making money on that one. PS: just about a week ago I got my Gibson ‘61 Standard in Translucent Teal! The guitar has a fast rosewood fingerboard, excellent pickups, hard case. The guitar quacks, chimes, and growls like a real SG should. Love love love it!

Classic 60s Era "Solid Guitar" The G-400 Deluxe PRO is inspired by the first generation of SGs made in the 1960s at the legendary Gibson and Epiphone factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan that produced the Les Paul and the Casino. The SG model was originally intended to replace the Les Paul, which temporarily went out of production from 1961-1968. The new G-400 Deluxe PRO is constructed using the same dimensions and build techniques as vintage SGs and features a AAA Flame Maple Veneer top with a Mahogany body and neck with a comfortable 1960's SlimTaper 'D' profile and a 24.75" scale length. The Pau Ferro fingerboard has single ply binding with pearloid Trapezoid inlays, 22 medium jumbo frets, a 12" radius, and an adjustable truss rod with a 'bell' cover.

Interesting discussion! I recently watched a YT comparison between the Epi Greeny & the 3K Gibson Greeny and I think the Epi came out ahead in some important areas - long tenon, more authentic knobs etc. but not Nitro, obviously. Both have the same Gibson Greeny pick-ups. I'm not in the market for either but keen to try the Epi when it lands here in HK. I have tried Gibson Tribute & Studio guitars a few times and while quite nice I wasn't impressed but I did buy the Cherry Burst 1959 Epi / Gibson hybrid and also the Epi Cantrell Wino, which I felt very 'at home' on given the ebony fretboard and neck profile, both similar to my 1968 LP Custom. I plan to put Monty's Bethnal Greens in the Wino soonish. It's horses for courses between the more expensive Epis vs intro level Gibsons (or 2nd hand Standards if you are lucky). I look at Epis as great for modding to my own preferences frankly, bone nut, 50s wiring and some great pick-up options out there - Monty's, Lollar, Bare Knuckles and even the Gibson Greeny or 57 pick-ups. I don't consider re-sale value at all - I only buy guitars that I can happily work with. That said, if the economy picks up and I have a bit of spare change I would love to buy the Gibson 70s Deluxe re-issue (USD 3K) with mini-buckers (they sound great!) and/or a 2011 Long Island '59' Standard (USD 5K) which has been lurking in the main Gibson / Epi flagship here in HK. But before these two I would push the button on an Eastman 59/v and their Pomona Blonde Juliet - both exquisite guitars offering features Gibson doesn't in the sort of price range we are talking about. Whatever - appreciate the insight from your vid and there's no 'right answer', really - it just comes down to the player 🙂👍

If I had an extra guitar-devoted $1,500 the Greeny thing certainly wouldn’t be it. Rather, I’d get a nicer amp. But I say this from the perspective of currently owning a 2023 SG Standard. I think if you really want an "authentic" Les Paul then you really want a Gibson anyways and at the $1500 price point you really should just get a nice used one over an Epiphone. You'll be happier every time you see the name on the headstock. If you want a brand new "import" guitar that is Les Paul-ish then get yourself something like an LTD EC-1000. You're basically getting a Les Paul Custom/Axcess Custom with a choice of different boutique pickups too and for less than the Epi Or, if you want something with a U.S.A brand on the headstock at least, I'd look at the Fender Telecaster Custom FMT HH (terrible name!) which is basically a carved top SG in the shape of a Telecaster and come with a nice set of Seymour Duncans (early '03-'04 Korean examples had some pretty 'meh' Fender pickups) Honestly, having seen a few reviews of the Gibson Modern Lite now too, I reckon I'd take the EC-1000 over it as well for that style of guitar, it doesn't do enough for the price either

Eastman guitars are made in china, and they get very good reviews. So what is the issue of made in china? I have Fender strats from Japan, Korea, Mexico and USA. My favourite is MIM roadhouse strat. But it has fender on the headstock. If epiphone said gibson MIC would we be having this debate on what is good value? Or perception of brand value? There is a very good side by side comparison of gibson greeny v epiphone greeny and they soundef identical! But the 59 epiphone LP is still fantastic value and bb2 &bb3 are just as good pickups. If you want a quality LP get a discounted 59, if you cant afford a gibson lp greeny standard get the epiphone greeny👍

The $1500 Epiphones will pull up the price of the Epiphone LP Standards. Won’t be able to get them for $650 any more.

Ok, so you all didn’t consider the “investment” argument that the cork sniffers like to go by. Pay $1500 for a Chinese Epiphone now, and it’ll be worth $250,000 in 30 years! They’re gonna sound better too! Also, in 30 years, some new crappy Gibson brand will be created and get made on some random third world Island. The cycle continues. . . . Here’s a challenge. Can anyone find a decent Gibson LP or 335 (or another model that generally costs more) that costs as much as a $699 Epiphone? Like in fantastic condition? Dave, that could be a fun game for us to play on a live stream or maybe you can make such a video. No Chibsons, that’s cheating (no pun intended)! Also, I ❤ the 2016-2017 HP’s. The cases are lead tanks from what I’ve heard, but the guitars are probably the best made in the 20-teens decade.

If people want a 'greenie' so bad, why don't they just buy a regular Epi LP Standard for a sane amount of money, and just flip the magnet in the neck pickup? Whether ya know it yet or not, any idiot can do it. I just did it, and if I can, anybody can. Oh wait, I know why: A regular Epi LP doesn't have pixie dust in the pickups, and the "real" Gibson headstock (cosmetic). Why do we keep letting them get away with all this gimmicky horseshit by paying way more for gimmicks that don't cost the company anything??

You get judged by the guitar you are playing you like it or not, so buy the Gibson

What Gibson is doing is abandoning the $1500 buyer. Now a decent Gibson is 3 grand. They're ripping you off. Don't give them your money.
