Gibson Les Paul Standard | Shootout - '50s, '60s, and Modern

Музыка

The Les Paul Standard is a classic guitar that almost every guitarist has or dreams of having in their collection. The classic tone is a staple in rock and roll, and the feel of the instrument in your hands is second to none. Mike Rock seeks to show you the differences between 3 amazing models; the '50s, the '60s, and the Modern. Which one will be your favorite? Let us know below!
[Correction] Mike mentions a "graphite top" on the LP Modern he was playing. That is in fact a maple top. The graphite top is a specific model which can be seen here: bit.ly/33kUxc8

I received a 60's Standard from Sweetwater. It areived in tune. After playing it for an hour yesterday mimicing Albert King and Dicky Betts I put it away. I got up extra early this morning to play and it was still dead on 440 E tuning. Loving this guitar.

Why does every guitar reviewer play with overdrive? I've owned 36 Les Pauls ranging from an original '57 goldtop, '58 cherry sunburst, 70's deluxe, all sorts of re-issues and standard production l.P's, Traditionals, and V.O.S They are are all different in tone, playability, feel etc. but I know instantly i play it NOT PLUGGED IN if its "Got it" that feel that stands out when its a good 'un. then I play thru a clean channel on an all valve amp, and this is where you can really hear the nuances and tonal range and sensitivity of the guitar. It tells me so much more than cranking up the drive ever will. If its not great clean, then It will never be a stand out guitar cranked, as overdrive masks so much of the subleties. Great tone primarily comes from the wood and the player, The best compliment I ever received after a gig was when a guitarist friend who's playing was much admired, Took my elbow and said.... "Great TONE Rog, Great tone!" Meant more to me than anything that I had been told before regarding my playing. SO... dear reviewers, PLEASE OH Please lets hear them clean, Then by allmeans crank 'em up.

I agree...one I let get away was a 68 gold top that finish was so checked up I swear it must have been made with old stock Maybe maybe not but wish would have kept it Had quite a few 70's and 80's and all were super heavy Then finally got a brand new 97 R9 but lost it in 08...so found one of these in Nashville at 8.4 lbs and got to play it in a road trip so scooped it up At 62 I need lighter guitars unfortunately but hey finally got to get another proper Gibby besides my 66 Jr Good stories man Cheers

Couldn’t agree more about the clean tone comments. Too many tests on bake right out of the gate. I just bought a 50s Goldtop P90. It’s a beauty but heavy at 10.1 lbs. What’s your experience been with Les Paul weight? I’m hoping you agree that 10 lbs is doable. :-)

Man, after 45 years of playing and buying/selling/keeping electrics, these new gen of traditional Les Pauls have knocked me over. I ordered a '19 60s Standard online (why not? If I didn't like it, I send it back and ask for another.) and it remains in the top 3 of my ridiculously large collection. Just a few months ago, my Sweetwater rep told me about a new 2021 Classic blem. The blem consisted of scratches around the 3-way. Once I knew I wanted to keep it, I polished out the scratches in about five minutes. I "knew I was going to instantly rip out the pcb pots and electronics" and replace them with my preferred traditional handwired bits. Coil-splitting? Out of phase? Blower switch? As if! Not in one of my Les Pauls! Well the joke was on me. I Iove every single thing those push-pull pots do. I may only use them 10% of the time, but when the tune calls for it, I have the tool. When I don't need it, I don't know it's there. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks after all - at least this old dog.

Back in August I went to a Guitar Center in Little Rock because they had the 50's, 60's and a 50's with the P90s. All of them had issues like deep tool marks on the rosewood, finish on the rosewood, the pickups on one were mounted improperly (probably 45º away from the strings toward the bridge), and shavings from the neck binding were left hanging on. Gibson never bothered to respond to inquiries. I managed to find a '89 Standard for around the same price and I love it. I'm sure there are decent versions of the 2019 models out there but the ones that I came across were not.

I know all this stuff but you’ve really explained it better than most people I’ve watched. I’m just seeing what people say about the 50’s, contemplating getting one. For me the 60’ a bit too hot and Grover tuners ruin the look though they are better than the Kluson style. The modern might be ok for some people but it’s not a Les Paul in my mind. Les Pauls hard to play up the top of the neck but just learn how to do it. Simples. Yes I’m a traditionalist.

in the Battle on the Guitar market Gibson is prepaired they can buildt cool cheap, also very exspensive Instruments (i mean that is not only a Headstock with a legendary Name) and very sweet Standards Gibson the one and only but not only a Company and ya can`t expect that Gibson buildt you a 70 year old mahoganie burst beast because of the age of the wood this legendary Instruments are avalible perhaps for millionärs so it`s really good what the company offers with this 50 and 60 standards the guitars are first class (if any player is that don`t know)- if that is not enough you can afford the custom shop Modells so what more can the company do? I wish them sucsessfor their Products and Product controls ( especially the Standards) and thumb up GIBSON and Daughters stay Tuned, stay on the market

Wait, both standards have only acrylic inlays? Is that historically accurate, I always assumed they would be mother of pearl? That sucks. May aswell get an Epiphone and save a tonne of cash.

Yeah I don't get how they justify their prices. It's what keeps me from buying one. Especially in today's market with all the great guitars and options at better price points. These are $1200-$1500 guitars. The quality and options just aren't worthy of the price. Mostly my generation buying these. I think Gibson is on their way out, sadly. I've got a PRS guitar that ran me $2000, but it blows these away in every category. Why would I pay $2500 for a guitar that's inferior to a guitar $500 cheaper. It's all nostalgia at this point. Like buying antiques.
