The problem is that any form of moving Gibraltar towards the EU, is seeing by the UK government as moving it towards Spain. But the thing is that there is no alternative. Spain is not going to allow the UK to have their cake and eat it. If the UK wants freedom of movement in Gibraltar, then it cannot become a free entry way into the EU by British people. And since Spain is the one sponsoring Gibraltar into Schengen, it is thus its responsability to check passports and the border. There is no way that a government has a responsability to do that, and then allows other government to do it themselves, especially when Gibraltar is famous for having been both a tax haven and a contraband haven for decades. I mean, the Spanish government unilaterally decided to extend healthcare for Gibraltarians for two extra years, as a sign of good will, and the UK did nothing to reciprocate that. The UK needs first to understand what they want, and then explain it to the rest of us, because they are always asking for contradictory things, like in the case of NI.

The UK government have their hands tied, it is not up to them what happens in our country it is up to the government of Gibraltar which is recognised as the legitimate voice of Gibraltar by the UK since 2006. The UK is down as the party negotiating the agreement as the Spanish do not recognise our government. Spanish boots on the ground here is very politically sensitive especially when you realise those in their 50s/60's spent most of their youth behind a border closed by Franco many separated from family members who lived on the other side of that border. People in the UK should really forget about including Gibraltar in their Brexit argument and should definitely not draw their own conclusions regarding the vote which may I remind you was for the UK to stay in Europe and the option of Gibraltar being part of Europe which involved any form of rule from Madrid would be firmly rejected

The reason their naval industry even exists is due to their "crown territory" status allowing them to ignore that. To note how bad this is for Spain. La Linea is THE municipality with the highest environmental taxes in the country, by a very wide margin, because, being Gibraltar's border, they have to clean that up. Yeah they're really not happy about Gibraltar, at all. Also note that the transit of boats in clearly illegal state to gibraltar from UK is the reason both Spain and Portugal have had multiple environmental disasters on their waters, most notably the Prestige. So the Galicians are also not happy.

The removal of the right to healthcare in Spain has lead to huge numbers of retired Brits who lived in Spain having to move back to the UK, thereby putting even greater demand on the NHS. Prior to Brexit they were entitled to healthcare in Spain which the UK then paid for. Spanish healthcare is generally of at least equal quality as that available in the UK but costs less, so pre-Brexit this actually saved the UK money.

That was a factual position. If 100% of UK people vote X but Spain and Poland vote Y, Y happened. In the UK. Is a factual position on some issues. UK taxes were subsidising Portugese village halls is a fact. UK had a material net contribution. So slogan "Control of money, laws and borders" were all 3 based on facts. The implicitly remain slogan of "Yeah. We know its s**t. But GDP growth likely to be a few percent lower if we vote leave in aggregate over the next decade." That wasn't a fact. Was an estimate / projection. Leaving is a risk was a fact. People very much knew leaving was a risk. A material chunk of "the 48%" were "I don't like the EU, but it's too risky to change". 48% was not "I love the EU. It's awesome"

the Gibraltar airport is in Spanish territory. The border of the original treaty was not respected and UK take advantage of the weakness of Spain during the Spanish civil war seizing more territory and violating the original teatry. What about that. Part of Gibraltar is spanish territory seized by Churchill. Also the original treaty specifies very clearly that the waters around Gibraltar are all Spanish and this has not been respected either, and UK claims that the waters are theirs, when it is very clearly wrote in the original Utrech treaty. For starting UK could respect what they signed.

Furthermore its status as crown territory allows them to completely ignore environmental regulations both of UK and EU. This is why amongst other things they dump raw sewage into the sea, and let UK boats in for repairs in a state that wouldn't allow them to dock anywhere else in UK. Point is those facts allow UK rich men to make a LOT of money by having much cheaper boat repairs (at the expense of Spanish environment), paying no taxes, and smuggling whatever they want. As a Spaniard I understand that Gibraltarians want to remain British. It is also true that if Gibraltar were in Switzerland they would now be a canton, the Swiss Franc has much more appeal than the Union Jack. The economic future of Gibraltar passes through Spain, those Gibraltars must understand that you cannot have everything, in that they behave like supporters of Brexit. Gibraltar will have to admit EU officials and police at its borders, port and airport and harmonize its tax policy. Spain is interested in a prosperous Gibraltar that serves to grow the economy of the province of Cádiz, which is the poorest area in Spain. Gibraltar's political future will be decided when there are no economic differences between one side of the fence and the other

I didn't want to leave the EU. My Dad was in the forces, we moved A LOT. I was born in Germany, we lived in several places out there and as I've grown up, I've travelled a lot. I thought borders were a thing of the past. Having visited Gibraltar at least once a year for the last 10 years (excluding during COVID) and I have to say, entering and leaving is now an absolute nightmare. We often park up on the Spanish side and walk in but recently took our camper van onto Gib to get cheap fuel. The queue of traffic going in was absolutely terrible and took us 40 minutes - which I know is actually relatively quick. Previously, the only delays were if the Spanish decided to throw a wobbly or the main road in was closed due to a plane landing/taking off. Now you queue to stamp out of Spain, then you have to stamp back into Spain when you leave. I hate it.

Gibraltar is like someone gets into your house moves into a bedroom without your consent and at gun point, and then, the intruder demands electricity, water and to be allowed to use the bathroom, kitchen and driveway to be able to get into the bedroom they invaded inside your home, but they spit on your face inside your own house every time they see you. Gibraltar is like that bedroom in your home taken by an intruder; it is Spanish territory that was taken by force. Strangely you do not appeal on freedom and democracy within the UK when it became clear that nor NI, nor Gibraltar, nor Scotland, nor London, wanted to leave, and these areas pointed out the problems they would face in economical and practical ways. The EU does not involve in internal affairs of member states, nor in those of former members. Only when it involves matters and conditions of their membership, or treaties that involve the EU explicitly. For Northern Ireland a treaty was made that would open the border between ROI and UK as part of the Good Friday Agreement. For Gibraltar a treaty was made that would open the border between Gibraltar and Spain, as part of entree conditions for Spain. Consequences are that both borders cannot be closed by either side. Consequences are as well that borders would be drawn between NI or Gibraltar and the other parts of the UK when the UK left the EU. Both ROI and Spain are bound to these treaties as well as the UK and EU, and all others involved. This means that the ROI is involved when the status of NI changes. This means that Spain is involved when the status of Gibraltar changes. Both have the right to block any action by the EU or others.
