I'm a pet sitter. I had a customer adopt a dog shortly after their senior dog passed away. They already had a dog and a cat. They found out the pup had Giardia, then a week later proceeded to take a two and a half week vacation. Then didn't bother to tell me she was sick until after they had left, leaving me to deal with the problem and only wanting to pay me for a once a day visit. What a nightmare. They did not stress the severity of the situation at all. Some people should not be pet owners.

antigen test is not recommended right after the end of the treatment to see if the treatment was successful or not. Many people do it after they end the treatment only for it to read false positive because antigens may still be present in the body even though giardia is not there anymore - they then put an animal through another round of treatment again unnecessarily. After the treatment it is best to do microscopic test but test many different samples taken from different days. Also, azithromycin is now commonly used to treat gardia in many european countries as it is quicker, more effective and easier on the animal. We moved past fenbendazole and metronidazol some time ago.

I paid almost $4000 for my puppy, was supposed to pick him up on Saturday. They told me to NOT go online, it would scare me. They played down Giardia. I wasn’t expecting to have to wash and bleach my house daily and all these extra precautions on day one.

I have two cats with giardia. I have bought a steam cleaner because I have read that heat kills cysts and I plan to use a product with quaternary ammonium on the surfaces although I am a little afraid because if you do not rinse it perfectly it can be dangerous for the cats. In treatment I will have them locked in a room while I clean the rest of the house little by little and watch when they go to the litter box to collect the feces immediately. What I am not very clear about is how or what to use to clean the cats' perianal area afterwards of each bowel movement. They are indoor cats and I have never bathed them on the advice of my veterinarian. Thank you

Both can kill giardia cysts, so it will depend on what you have access to and what you are cleaning. You can ask your local veterinarian for more specific advice for your specific situation!

Thanks for the video! I got a rescue dog 2 weeks ago who has giardia...i was only told to wipe and clean up after each bowel movement, and wasn't told about having to clean her bowls, toys, and bedding 😔 so after her 1st vet visit, she's starting her second round of Panacur. This info is very helpful and now I'll do a better job of cleaning daily. I bought dog grooming wipes to wipe her after each bowel movement, but should i be wiping my dog using a mild bleach solution or is there something that is safe to wipe on dogs that would kill any cysts on her body?

That's a great question! I wouldn't wipe with bleach. I would aim to get all visible stool off after every bowel movement and acknowledge that it's not going to be a perfect clean every time. Then, perhaps consider a full and thorough bathing on the day that the course of treatment ends with the hope of removing anything that might be lingering on that day. I hope this course of treatment is successful for your dog - giardia isn't any fun at all!!!

hi tx U so much for this video. Quick question - cleaning for Giardia, is Ammonia not toxic to dogs ? Is there a dog safe cleaner ?

  • @VetMedCorner

Don't feed the cleaner to your dog, and after the cleaner has been used (keeping in mind the proper contact time etc) then you can remove the cleaner with water. Thanks for the question!

I’m not sure if you’ve mentioned this, but is BPA in canned foods anything to be concerned about? There’s so much conflicting information about it, and it seems even different countries’ regulatory agencies don’t agree on what the safe limits for it are. I’ve noticed a lot of brands have removed the BPA lining in cat wet foods, but most dog canned foods still have it. I don’t worry about myself consuming some BPA now and then, but for a dog I think about it more considering they’ll be eating that food every single day. Thoughts?

You will need to ask them what suspected diagnoses they have for your dog. Your dog will need to be able to keep themselves hydrated and be eating enough to sustain themselves before you would be able to safely take them home. It sounds like your dog is incredibly seriously sick, and I hope she keeps improving ❤️‍🩹
