Excellent Q&A interview. Sam is among the top, most insightful and measured football analysts in today's media. The questions addressed topics central to the Giants prospective performance this year, and Sam's responses were knowledgeable, nuanced and without hyperbole. As a former QB, I'm more comfortable than most with the Giants QB room. Jones, Lock and Devito have their pros and cons, but collectively they bring enough talent to leverage their improved WR corp, TE tandem and RB wheel routes. Lock is a special player in this QB mix. In a word, he gets it - to be of service to the starter and able to drive the big bus when called upon. We know Devito can perform in that role, too. His experience last season was invaluable and something to build upon moving forward. Given DJ's legitimate health concerns, Lock and Devito's involvement will likely become quite relevant. I know this too well. I accumulated concussions running a veer option offense, which ultimately forced me to discontinue my QB aspirations. In 2022, Brian Daboll gets full credit for understanding the relative capacities of DJ, the O-Line and WR corp. Rather than biting off more than he could chew, he established parameters that made the offense efficient while mitigating turnovers. Sam commented that in 2023 the Front Office got greedy, opting to bolster the passing game without securing the O-Line's obvious deficits. Back then, with each signing I muttered, "yeah, great, but what about the O-Line." The FO learned a difficult lesson the hard way. Every Giants Super Bowl championship team controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage. It's nothing short of crucial to this team's success. Moving forward, I trust Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will make the corrective measures necessary to restore the NY Giants as a competitive force in the NFL.

Eli won a SB in 2011 with one of the worst OL in the league and Tyrod & Devito both visibly outplayed DJ last year behind basically the same shit OL…and with the cap hit DJ brings that shouldn’t even be remotely possible…regardless of circumstances. DJ has more alibis than OJ😂

What a relief to hear someone who knows what they're talking about not be all doom and gloom on the Giants QB situation for this year. So many fans are predicting miserable failure for the Giants(and Jones in particular) that they will accuse you of being delusional if you think otherwise. Failure is all but certain and success is just not possible. I'm not buying it. There are no guarantees of course but I think it's possible that Jones could have a bounce back season as long as he's recovered physically AND mentally from 2023. I think Coach Daboll knows what he is doing and has has an idea about what kind of offense he intends to run whether it be driven by Jones OR Drew Lock. The Jones derangement syndrome is so bad that they are predicting very limited success for Malik Nabers, anticipating complete incompetence from the QB position. Thankfully, I doubt anyone close to the Giants is expecting such a gloomy outcome. Thanks for bringing some sanity to the conversation.

Why do people keep saying they should have franchise tag Daniel Jones? If the Giants salary cap was in a better position last season, perhaps, but I have to ask if the Giants tag Jones last year, would they have been able to make the moves in Free agency they did last year like getting Bobby Okereke and still have money to sign their rookie class...

Because the franchise tag would have been a one year prove it deal at 30+ million.

Signing him to a contract was a cheaper cap hit for the first year, compared to the tag

@sashagraves6842 But that's the issue. In 2022, the cap was a disaster and in 2023, it had got better, but not as much. If the Giants were in a better financial situation with the cap, I say OK, but 35 million against it in 2023 would have limited them with what they could do. It seem alot of people who keep saying they should had tag him, misses that part. The only true mistake which we can say with hindsight now was they should had picked up his fifth year option. Having them tag Saquon cost only 10 million against the cap compared to 35 million

I know what you mean. People that say that don't understand the salary cap hell we were in last year. By franchising him it made all our other moves available to us. The only other option we would have had was letting him walk.

I get what Sam is saying about a possible "overpay" for Runyan but the market is always a factor. I think the main attraction to Runyan is about his ability in pass protection and the Giants decided that it was important enough that they didn't want him going elsewhere. Both Runyan and Eluemunor have also been quite durable which is another ability the Giants have had issues with in recent years. Fingers crossed.
