How much did they have to pay him to have him say Sram is less fatiguing on the legs than Shimano? Thats just hilarious.

I wish that Cycling Weekly would post more reviews of 'regular' priced bikes. It's nice to ogle at 10k bikes but almost no one can afford them - and the review of this model often doesn't translate to lower prices. (Example here, the carbon layup changes due to the use of a regular seat post) I think (and could be wrong) that the £3k models are top of what most people would justify if they could afford it. Above that any performance gain truly is marginal gains. It seems to get worse as the price drops: when buying my first road bike 4 years ago I struggled to find reviews of bikes under £1k. I needed the reviews to help understand what effect geometry changes would have, whether it represented good value, etc. Riding them didn't help as all drop bar bikes felt twitchy when compared to hybrid bikes I'd ridden throughout uni.

@@MrOMGWTFROFL1 I get that people do buy the super expensive bikes, but not many people. Just want to see a fairer distribution of reviews. And I hate seeing reviews for cheaper bikes talking about things to upgrade. If the item needing an upgrade causes a notable enough deficit it's not an upgrade, it's fixing the bike. Or the reviewer is ignoring that there has to be a compromise to hit the lower prices (wheels). Currently got a bee in my bonnet as cycling is being taken up by new people. The implications of high cost might put these new people off the sport.

They review the bikes the manufacturers send them, which is usually top tier stuff. Same with a lot of the demo bikes. I went to the Specialized experience center in Boulder, CO to demo a couple of MTBs and the Enduro they handed me was an S-Works with Full Fox Factory suspension and full XTR groupset (was surprised it didn't have SRAM etap). Second bike I demoed was a more reasonable Stumpjumper Expert, still carbon frame/wheels, but a more typical SRAM GX groupset and Fox 36 Performance fork, and literally half the price of the S-works. The $5000 bike was more fun to ride than the $10,000 race machine. Even then neither bike felt dramatically better than the $2100 Aluminum frame Giant Trance that I ride normally, the main difference I noticed was in the stiffness and responsiveness of the carbon wheels and a little better suspension response.

Agree 100%. I've been waiting for my employer to remove the £1k cap from their cycle to work scheme which they finally did last month (up to £4k to incorporate those who want electric bikes) I'd imagine most employers would top out about the same, so when you consider adding accessories then £3.5k is probably the upper limit for the vast majority of current or budding enthusiasts that you would think would be Cycling Weekly's target audience. For me I'm looking to buy my 1st bike, I've been riding a hand me down for a few years, £1k would have been plenty for my commute but have got really into it and now doing regular hilly 30 -50 miles routes on said hunk of junk (which is probably 2 sizes too big for me) so whilst I can now look at (and justify) some serious options, nowhere has any stock in store, therefore can't view / test ride, so reviews are essential. Maybe there are just too many brands and models to effectively cover all bases, but I would thought it better to focus on the lower - mid tiers, with nods to the advantages that the pro bikes have, rather than review the top tier when it doesn't reflect what the average person is buying. If you are looking at this bike in particular David Arthur has I think 3 reviews on the £3.6k adv pro 1

All you need to do for extra comfort is swap the 25mm for 28mm tubeless tyres at a lower psi so you can do those 100km rides without feeling the road buzz getting at you. I wonder how much going to 28c tires and dropping tire pressure might help with the ride quality. It sounds like it has all the qualities of a great bike for canyon carving and attacking mountain passes, god tier on the climb and incredibly responsive on the descent. I also suspect going to a lower model with the D-fuse adjustable seat post would help the ride quality like it does on the Defy. If I were going to get this bike I'd probably get a 105 or Ultegra equipped model at a much more reasonable price.

This review is SO misinformed, biased and discriminated against the none-Western, Taiwanese Giant Bike Co. 1st -SL uses nanotube technology/harden resin (CNT.) It is mixture of T700/T800/T1000 with 1k/UD weaved carbon, it’s not just T700 alone. www.giant-bicycles.com/int/technology/detail/55 2nd -The robo-layups is what they’ve been using in F1 race cars, so Yes. It is way more advanced and stiffer than the BMC and Piñata. 3rd -Of course it’s gonna be super twitchy and a bit uncomfortable, the thru-axle made the bike even stiffer. 4th -Cadex wheels are laced with carbon spokes and super stiff hubs, no flex there. You didn’t mention that Giant clearly stated that this is a “Total Race Bike” not your average touring or endurance bike. Therefore, if the characteristic of the TCR SL and the Cadex wheelset is too much of a bike for you to handle. You should have review the TCR pro with a more comfortable SLR wheelset prior to this. Or get yourself a couch like endurance bike for your type of riding. 4th -Yes. The front knocking noise is from the shitty Sram pads, all Sram riders has to deal with their poor DB engineering, it has nothing to do with Giant. Please do a better job the next time🤫

Dude, Ducati motorcycles can cost $40,000 USD. If your friend bought a Ducati for the same price of this bike, he got the entry level model. So, he didn't get the "best" Ducati. You get what you pay for.

gixxer 750 Hear me out here: my neighbor bought a Ducati Scrabler Cafe Racer. This Giant TCR (with tax) costs almost $14,000 US!! Are you trying to tell me there is more R&D in this TCR than my friends Ducati? His motorcycle is stunning and costs $3000 less. You're talking about a bike with a set of wheels, cranks and a drivetrain for $14,000??? We're cyclists, we've gotten used to these extravagant and astronomical prices, but the reality is we're being sold a bill of goods! You ask any non-cyclist walking down the street how much bicycles cost these days and they'll look at you like you're crazy...and they'd be right. Any reputable Chinese factory these days can make a solid carbon fiber frame and fork for a few hundred dollars. Don't get me wrong, I love high end beautiful bikes just like anyone else, but when will it end? $15,000? $17,000? At this rate a $20,000 bicycle is just around the corner.

If there's a market for it then people are paying these prices. While I agree it's not as material as a motorcycle, it makes the middle and lower end models look like a better deal with the lower prices.

@@costasmandylor1565 same could be said for a car costing over $1 million USD ( Bugatti; McLaren). Wouldn't you find that ridiculous too?? It seems $10k USD for a high end bicycle seems "cheap" now lol, right? What about a private jet costing $100 million USD? many celebrities and CEO'S have them. Are they stupid for buying one. What about a yatch costing millions of dollars?? I could go on and on. Just because you can't afford them doesn't mean it is crazy to for someone who can to buy them. Again, you get what you pay for.

I think 80% of your "NOT" comfortable outcome was because you used the same 25mm tires that came with the bike & never once changed to 32mm. As David Arthur changed to 32s and he was very comfy on the bike granted he had non fixed seatpost model but tires make 90% of difference to comfort than a seatpost.. Especially when you are talking about 7mm difference.

It may be more aesthetically clean, but unless you're a bike mechanic prepare to shell out some $$$ to service a fully integrated cockpit. I read the engineering notes for this bike, and Giant specifically choose not to do that. They basically took the best of both designs -- a lower drag coefficient and the ability to service it yourself. In my book, that's a win.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzread.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

Isn't T700, 800, 900 etc. from Toray composites in japan ? If Giant makes their own carbon, it shouldn't be T700, etc. It should be some other kjnd made by Giant !!

I have to admit that Giant builds good bikes, but as a Chinese who grew up in China, I would never buy any Giant bikes in the future. This is simply because of the continuous bad Chinese Giant customer service experience and bad attitude Chinese Giant staffs had made a stigma which builds the equation in my mind which Giant=Company doesn’t care about its customers. In the Chinese market, Giant has been cutting down cost by letting other small local bike stores join their retailer-ship. However they have never ever trained the staffs enough, so that they are never professional, and what’s more, they don’t even have good attitude towards customers in general. I understand people around the globe, especially Chinese in mainland (because of the monopolization in the industry in China), are still considering Giant as their first choice. Because Giant always provide good cost-performance, and generally speaking Giant has its reputation of building great bikes. However, with all that bad experience, I wouldn’t bother enabling the company to steal my money, when I have loads of options of bikes from other great companies in North America.

I guess that was probably Giant’s strategy for expansion. Early in the 2000s, Giant was known for selling cheap commuter bikes and cheap mountain bikes in China. And because of the large population, they could earn loads of money. However, even tough they grow so big today, they are still doing the same thing. Giant local stores in Toronto, the city I live in right now is far better than that in Shanghai. Back in there, I have seen way terrible things Giant have done to my friends and people around me. Staffs were almost untrained. They recommend wrong size frame to my friend, and later they refused to replace or refund. I had also seen a technician using a flathead screw driver to dig out a tire on an aluminum wheel, causing a huge dent in the rim and later refused to do anything about it. And in general, I would say the technicians in Giant stores in Shanghai are just lazy (literally everyone I met). In Shanghai, the warranty covers pumping tires and all the minor adjustments where needed. But for all the time, I would have to pump the tires myself and adjust things myself, and the technician just sat there whole time and watched me doing all these things. I was fine, because I was experienced enough, however, just imagine those people who just get into cycling? Unfortunately, Giant has almost dominated the bicycle industry in China (together with Merida, which was no where better than Giant), and people could do nothing about it!

Wow, this is really interesting! I never would have guessed that Giant would treat their own customers so poorly. I guess if you nearly monopolize a market you can do whatever you want. It's a real shame though, because you're right. The people of China, and everyone else for that matter, have options. The Americans, Italians, and even Germans make great bikes. It's a shame.
