GIANT Rusty Wrench Restoration

Ғылым және технология

Well, this is the biggest Wrench restoration i have ever done. I spent too much time to restore such massive 90mm single open-end rusted Wrench and tried my best to turn that Wrench into perfect.
All the processes of restoration this big Wrench are below:
Sandblasting:
The most easy way to get abrasive for sandblaster is to sift the river sand through a fine sieve to obtain the same grain fractions, river quartz is ultra filtered and does not contain clay also this is most easy way to get sand for sandblaster. To clean rust of metal i took a rusty refrigerator and turned into a Sandblasting camera which was not easy and took me almost 2 weeks of work.
Grinding:
I spent 3 days only on preparation and rough grindings since the surface area was significant. I also used my professional angle grinder to remove all the inequalities.
v. I restored a Profile with the help of straight file.
v. All the roughness was removed by Hand sanding.
v. Felt wheel and paste were used for the final shine.
Composite:
I used a special composite to fill the inner surface of the Wrench the basis of which contain Steel Powder formed during grinding and mixed with resins and polyurethane. This is the best way to create a strong surface resistant to damage and scratches.
Coating:
There is a professional method of powder coating
and that is
Covering the whole Wrench electrostatically and curing under heat or with ultraviolet light. But we also can use a quality fast dry primer and enamel. I used RAL 9005 black enamel for this purpose.

Something as simple and unusual as a huge old wrench now transformed into a piece of art for your shop wall. Too cool tool! Nicely done. I look forward to your next project.

great job. Your as nutty as me when it comes to perfection. Its almost a disease the time we spend doing things that when its all said and done no one would ever guess you put that kind of time into it. As a side note. For a wrench with over 3" at the mouth the manufacturer didn't leave much in the line of leverage with such a short handle. God Bless and again great job.

Those cherries were as shiney as your restorations. And, I love the homemade sandblaster, and the sand you used! Also, I think there was a matching sledgehammer with that wrench? I can't imagine using that big-ass thing with out some extra leverage.

Thank you :) Those wrench was made at "LTZ" tractor factory ~1932 - 1944 year, and was used for big machinery, and yes there was traces and dents on a handle from sledgehammer blows.

I'm usually pretty meh on the usage of body filler in restorations as an alternative to properly sanding/filing to clean metal... But making body filler out of the steel you filed off of the outer edge of the wrench? Chef's kiss in the problem solving there. It makes it kind of a shame that you then painted over it, considering that it seemed pretty tough. If it was for rust prevention, maybe just a clear lacquer instead would've sufficed? Still, overall, very nicely done!

Well done! Good job on the restoration and the video editing was beautiful. You have a lovely place there. Mixing the metal filings with the epoxy was a neat idea. Why did you paint it though? I hope you are wearing a respirator when using the blasting cabinet. River sand may not have clay but it does have silica. Breathing silica dust can cause silicosis, which in severe cases can be disabling, or even fatal. When silica dust enters the lungs, it causes the formation of scar tissue, which makes it difficult for the lungs to take in oxygen. There is no cure for silicosis. That is why it is no longer recommended for use blasting operations. Take care.

Totally useless tool but nevertheless.., you put it back in better than it's original condition👍👍 Now for your next video, Please consider this---I'm sure many would agree. Turn this wrench into a boot jack,(google some pictures for inspiration) Now that would be the ultimate man cave gearhead toy, , keepsake and one-of custom conversation piece. No doubt it would always be put to use.
