My grandfather purchased an island way out in Lake Huron/Georgian Bay in 1952 for $225. While I fished all over that area in the '80s, '90s and beyond, and would always catch butt loads of fish, there was a rather noticeable disappearance of muskellunge and walleye. Grandpa always told stories about the plentiful amount of walleye and muskie they would catch "back then", but for some reason those two species of fish were pretty much cleared out of Georgian Bay after the 70s. Eradicated, basically. I always wondered why. I'd heard of two strange reasons for that, speculation of course on the disappearance being the zebra mussel and the cormorant bird. Odd, I know. But it did not take away from the quality of fishing that I experienced there, all my life, as I grew up in the United States, Pennsylvania. Great Video, btw, thanks

Hey Allen, glad you enjoyed the video. I'm sorry to hear about the fishing in the Georgian bay. It seems like so many fisheries these days have stories like that, where populations have declined. It really makes me realize how much we need to appreciate the quality of the fisheries we have currently and not take them for granted. hopefully we can learn from the ones that have declined and figure out ways to revive them, or prevent the same from happening in other places.

Thanks! I film with a Canon 80D with mainly a Canon EF 28MM lens and a Go Pro Hero 8

Can I use the same rod I use for steelhead/salmon or do I need a tougher setup? Any tips you have for equipment needed to chase Musky w/ a fly rod is appreciated. After 7 years catching them w/ the usual casting/trolling tactics, I am ready for a new experience. Thank you in advance.

Hey Mark, glad to hear that you are gonna give musky on the fly a try! I'm not sure what size rod you are using currently for steelhead but chances are you might want something a bit bigger for musky. When I first started chasing musky I tried to use my fast action 7 wt and about the second trip I did it snapped in half from just casting the flies. Now I use a 9wt which honestly is totally fine for fighting pike and musky but still on the lighter side for throwing these big flies. Hey! It is the Stowmaster tournament series musky net, I think its the 94" size. great net, everyone we fish with for musky uses this net

Those fish are great to catch on a 7 wt outfit. This fish on that rods never took out even a 20 foot of fly line so where is the fun just catch em?

Hey Shangui, You're right, these fish could probably oftentimes be fought on a 7 weight rod. The problem is we fish 12"-14" flies for musky and cant cast them effectively on a 7 weight. I actually personally broke a 7 weight 2 seasons ago that I was trying to use for musky from casting. In this video I was using a 9 weight and my dad was using a 10 weight and most of the guys around us use 10 or 11 weight rods for these fish. even if they aren't ripping 100 yds of line off the reel, these fish are still plenty fun to catch!

@@isaacness But they don't eat anything smaller or you can use a bucktail hollow fly is extremely lightweight and make a big very big profile and you can cast with a 7 or 8 wt without problem. That way you can hear your reel screaming like a ... anyway everybody have fun in his own way. Good luck and tight lines!

Nice fish. You want to make this channel work, keep the booze shots after the day is done and back at the lodge. Hyping the hard drinking is going to turn a lot of viewers away.

Hey William, I appreciate the feedback. The group of guys I fish with have a long standing tradition of having a toast after a musky is caught. Since these fish are typically so elusive it’s usually not enough to have much effect. I can see how that could appear differently without any context and will take it into consideration with future videos

@@isaacness . My brother likes a crown royal toast after boating a steelhead. Problem is sometimes we land 15-20 fish a day! I have been operating a Sheriff boat for 25 years so things like alcohol catch my eye. I got no issues with you toasting a catch, I would just not over emphasize it on camera. Fly guys are an odd group and it could cost you views. Tight lines
