Giant goldfish are wreaking havoc on freshwater lakes

Massive goldfish, weighing up to dozens of pounds, are popping up in freshwater lakes across the United States and they are posing a major threat to the ecosystem. Scientists say the fish were formerly pets that were flushed or released into local lakes and keep growing with access to food. NBC’s Maggie Vespa reports for TODAY.

That’s actually a misconception. Healthy Fish will grow as large as they are supposed to. What stunts the growth in captivity is poor water quality, which is associated with smaller aquariums. A healthy Goldfish will grow to 1ft in length and can live 20 years, with the record being 43 years.

The kind of goldfish you buy at a pet store or get at a fair is called a Comet. And that's a full size one. They get to be the size of a pan fish like a bluegill.

If you go to Petco and look at their feeder goldfish tank, the label states they grow to 14 inches long. I had one that my crayfish didn’t eat and it got to 8 inches long in a 10 gallon tank before it died. When I got it, it was 1.5 inches long. Those are not full-size from the pet store, at least from Petco. Goldfish love to eat. I think one of the reasons why this one got so big is that I used to buy rainbow minnows to feed the crayfish, and I thought the crayfish was eating them because they were disappearing. I didn’t realize that the goldfish was actually eating the minnows. So I imagine a goldfish out in the wild that has almost unlimited food resources if it is an environment with lots of little fish.

Pet stores and county fairs gets lot of blames for letting people buy or win goldfish home. Goldfish are high maintenance and requires large tanks with filtration systems. Goldfish eat and grow a lot, as well as poop a lot (hence the need for a filtered tank). People who buy goldfish gets just as much blame for this situation especially if they don't do their research. There is more to caring for fish than throwing them into a tank.

I've had plants (corn plants and little white flower plants for outside. Corn plant is named Robert. Had him since before 2000. He's now over 7 feet tall. Little white outside flowers were on the porch rail til we had to move and have naughty squirrels that mess w my outside plants. But only the ones i just bought that cost $$$. I’ve used them as bait before. I didn’t think it was an issue because carp already live in Michigan. The goldfish mentioned here must be especially robust somehow compared to the native carp.

Using goldfish as bait in Michigan is illegal. Ya better not let the game warden catch you. I'm sure they probably work real well. I bet Mr. Pike would destroy a big gold fish on a tip-up, bass too.

Probably more likely people using them for bait and dumping their bait buckets at the end of the night. Paylakes sell goldfish by the pound for fishing and they often end up in the pond possibly washing out into waterways during heavy rains. I really can't imagine them being much of a problem since they're basically a small common carp(originally invasive but naturalized) with more natural predators(catfish love them, raccoons, ducks, cranes, herons).
