    Greetings from the Pacific Northwest. I've been watching Bikespeeds for awhile now and have learned so much...and then this Giant Defy rebuild came along. For me it was special because I have this exact model so now I know every part of my bike and how each part interfaces with all the others. Thank you for all the teaching you do and also for your son who does a wonderful job in the video production. You two are a good team. Wish you were around the corner instead of thousands of miles away! Best wishes.

    Love the content guys, as a mechanic sitting at home with a broken leg, this is the meditation that I need))) One thing that struck out is the rear derailleur coming out of the ultrasonic cleaner, I would definitely take it apart re-grease the cage pivot and the clutch, seen to many around that corroded from the inside and seized..

    Nice change of pace from the more 'careworn' bikes you've shown of late. I think you see the lesser defects more prominently when it's a user serviced bike. That hub service was very interesting too. Well beyond most of us, I imagine....

    As much as we’re a bike shop and we’d love everyone to bring their bikes to us we can’t blame people for doing their own mechanics lol. However we do believe even home mechanics can benefit just as much as everyone else from a once over every now and then just for a different set of eyes on the bike🧡

    I have a Giant Contend SL1 2021 which I bought in June this year on discount. I wanted to know more about the PR2 wheel and how the freehub is secured. This video showed everything I needed to know. The original wheel had lots of issues, including rim cracking at the spoke holes, a couple of broken spokes, cracking noise from the freehub and the hub tension bolts either undoing or play. My bike shop said they would start a warranty claim and at the same time, gave me another PR2 wheel that was new and unused, save some scratches from factory. That wheel is a 2022 wheel. I also have spare new PR2 wheels from someone who preferred their own wheels. Again these are 2022 wheels. The difference is 2021 had silver spoke nipples, while the 2022 wheels are black. Strangely I had a similar issue with my Giant Fastroad SL3 rear wheel had the same rim cracking last year. Again resolved under warranty and no problems with the replacement wheel. Unlucky or bad quality control during 2021 build year. I am 13 stones and both bikes are large fit. Giant D-fuse seat post clamp can have issues without gripper paste. I love your videos, and they are very informative.

Once piece of equipment i'd like your recommendation on is a ultra-sonic cleaner + the degreaser you use for it. Is there anything you can recommend or have some links? I can then try to find the parts here in Germany. In relation to this: how are you actually treating Di2 parts? Are you just washing them on the surface with a brush and never put them in the sonic bath? Best of luck to you!

    Do you check the steerer tube on those big services on carbon bikes? Afaik this is the most common point of failure on carbon frames and one of the worst crashes to be had as well. (I check the steerer tube on my full carbon forks once per year and I've found a damaged one once on a friends bike, which has instantly been swapped out by the manufacturer without any discussion whatsoever)

  • @GNX157
    @GNX157 Жыл бұрын

    Two quick things, the rear derailleur cable housing was a tad too long. That’s part of the reason why it was damaged. Second, per Shimano specs, the rear derailleur housing should have a shiny metal full thickness cable ferrule on the end going into the derailleur adjuster. The housing provided with a new derailleur itself is actually unique, and Shimano prefers you only shorten it from the end not using the metal ferrule.

    Couple of things I disagree with here, would like to hear your input. why would you use standard shift outer for the rear mech outer casing, why not use OT-RS900? As soon as the customer pulls that rear mech back to remove the wheel, they'll kink the outer. Secondly, using copper paste is only going to damage the piston seals and cause them to seize/leak, the copper paste will have already migrated onto the pistons.

  • @johnmoruzzi7236

    @johnmoruzzi7236

    Copper grease is put on the back of millions of motorbike / car / van / truck brake pads without destroying piston seals, why should it be suddenly a problem for bikes ?

  • @jdodd1258

    @jdodd1258

    Жыл бұрын

    @@johnmoruzzi7236 Well, most pad manufacturers for motorbikes do not recommend copper grease. There are two reasons for this, firstly the rubber seal will perish due to that copper paste, secondly it can contaminate the pads. Now, in the case of a shimano caliper, there are some significant differences, firstly the seals cannot be replaced, so when the seals do expand, you need to buy a new caliper. The copper paste can also migrate to the pad compound. I could write about this indefinitely so I'll leave it there. But in summary, very bad idea for a non-serviceable item.
