ótimo documentário de produção.
An anchor chain is obviously only as strong as its weakest link, so quality control is a paramount concern. No doubt, each batch of steel rod is tested for tensile strength and hardness. Consider the potential liability of a ship running aground because of a broken anchor chain. There is no room for error in the manufacturing of anchor chains. This was a very interesting video.
@fifi23o5

Each chain is tested. Material is usually not tested, since it is purchased from known supplyers according to standards. However, samples of each batch of the material are tested in steelworks before delivery to the chain factory.

How do they test the strength of the weld?
@fifi23o5
10 ай бұрын
@@ncooper8438 First it is checked visually, each weld is ground and visually checked, sometimes they are random checked ultrasonically and final test is calibration. Each chain is pulled to it's final lenght, that insures each link will fit in the ship's windlass, but most importantly, it is a test of strenght. Calibration is streching, that is actually plastic deformation. Nominal load of the chain is less than that, so if weld can withold that stress, it is good. After that there is a braking test. They cut a sample of three links from each batch, sometimes even from every chain and break it.

The interesting part was that the cross bar did not appear to be welded into the link.
@bigchrisrogers

@@petert3355 The welding is not always necessary, when the assembled chain is proof load tested the force causes the sides of the link to firmly grip the 'stud'. However, I think this factory does weld the studs in for extra security, perhaps later in the video or on another video.

When studying in marine college for my 2/E certificate, we had a visit to a chain works in Cardiff. Very impressive like this one. In the factory yard, there were large numbers of second hand chains and anchors. They were all under Customs bond for some reason. I didn't think that there would be a thriving smuggling operation with ships' anchors

Customs Bond is nothing unusual. If the parts are only on site for repair and will be going straight out of the country the business can set up a Bonded area which is Customs Duty free. It saves a lot of paper work that doesn't gain anybody a tax.

Is that divider bar only held in there by the sides being squeezed together?
@randydewees7338
9 ай бұрын
My question too! But it must be. I don't think it would be good for the link strength to weld the separator in.
@bigchrisrogers
4 ай бұрын
Often, yes. But equally often the 'stud' is also welded to the main body of the link at one end for extra surety. The stud prevents the sides of the link closing in on the next link if the chain is overloaded. Additionally it helps to reduce tangling of the chain and also provides extra weight, it is the weight of chain on the sea bed that contributes a lot to the holding power of the anchoring system.
6:08 That is some sort of electrical welding I think. Maybe resistance welding? If it is I'd love to know what kind of voltage and current are running to make sparks fly like that!
