GI 275 Software Upgrade 2.32 - Easy access to GPSS/HDG Autopilot Toggle

GI 275 software 2.32. upgrade installed and showing very easy access to the GPSS vs HDG toggle function for the Autopilot. It is now in the first menu level rather than three levels deep.
I did not install the alternative option which is a physical panel switch since I wanted to try the software option first.
There were no glitches whatsoever. Easy to toggle even in busy ATC airspace. GI 275 performed excellently as in the past including an RNAV approach.
Very happy with the change!!!

    Chris went back and watched this video again; I see I had already made a comment. Well, I bought my Mooney and I put a new panel in. Went with the GTN750Xi, GNC255A, G500TXi, GI275 as backup, GCU485 to interface with my KFC150. I really wanted the Garmin GFC500 AP but my Mooney has factory air so I can't get it. Flew for about 9 months with the steam gauges and wow what a difference GPSS makes. It had taken me awhile to get used to having the AP in HDG mode with GPSS on. I enjoy watching your video's and appreciate the information you film.

    Chris excellent video as always. I am buying my first Mooney in about a month, a 1998 Ovation. It has the six pack but am thinking of going with 2 GI 275 like your setup.

    Glad you enjoyed the video Frank! You will really like the Ovation. The dual 275's are the most cost effective and reliable way to replace your six pack. I am currently editing a video where I put the 275's in a "torture" test to see how the AI holds up without airspeed or GPS. Also planning a video about running the Ovation lean of peak and how efficient it is at LOP.

    Very nice! I had my just installed 275s updated as well in a TB20 but I don’t (yet) have a manual switch to toggle between GPSS and Heading. I don’t think I saw you use a manual switch. Are you satisfied that the software change is good enough to flip between the 2 without the manual switch? I haven’t had a chance to test them yet.

    Thank you FB! I am quite satisfied with the software menu change because it is really quite simple. This was my first flight with it and although it was quite busy with ATC it wasn't really that much IMC. Even so it did not interfere with my flying the plane at all. I believe I will have the same opinion even after more flights including LIFR approaches.

    You could use one of those holes to add an inexpensive vacuum attitude indicator for emergencies. I had the dual 275 failures that some others had and the Canadian NTSB wrote up. Garmin issued a patch but it’s just software can fail. Diversity of attitude is critical for instrument flying.

    I just had a pair of GI 275’s installed 3 months ago and they do not have this upgrade which appears to be very desirable. Did your original shop provide the upgrade? Was there an additional charge for the software upgrade? These videos have made flying behind the 275’s much easier. Great content - keep these coming!

    Thank you Jim! Yes, the original shop provided the upgrade which came out a couple of weeks ago. It has to be installed by a dealer. It should cost no anout 1 hr of labor max , whatever your shop charges per hr.

    Is the display backup display toggle switch, ON/AUTO required? My Mooney goes in the shop next month for dual 275s. I’ve finished my newly cut panel and it’s about to be powder coated. Just wondering if I need to drill out another hole

    If you plan on having the dual 275's replace your six-pack then the ON/AUTO switch is required per the STC. Verify with your shop. May have changed since I installed it, but doubt it.

I just painted it so I don’t have more money for new upgrades, so i have to wait. I live in Orlando and my plane in KISM .......... if you have more advices for those unwound like to here it.

    Welcome Alfredo! Looks like you have done a nice upgrade to your M20C and made lots of room in your panel. Everything working well together? Make sure you can fly RNAV, ILS, LOC, VOR and VOR-DME approaches without issues. Quite a few details in the system configuration settings particular to the 275’s… If your autopilot and 530W are working well I would not worry about more upgrades at this point. Your next step will end up being a GTN750 Xi and/or a 650 plus a GFC500 autopilot. :)

    Sure Tony! I use RAM mounts. You will need a yoke ball mount that is appropriate diameter for your airplane. The you need adequate length extensions to articulate the whole mount on your yoke. Finally will need the mount that fits your model iPad. I'll see if I can attach pictures to my comment.

    With a non Garmin AP what led you to select the 275s versus an Aspen 1000 Pro Max? Does the 275 provide for AP Flight mode annunciation, or do you have to look at the AP display to know what it is doing?

  • @chriskoppel3940

    @chriskoppel3940

    The GI 275 AHRS math is way superior to that of the Aspen Pro Max. In the previous version of the Aspen it would Red-X the attitude indicator if you lost airspeed (pitot ice, etc). It was improved in the Max but they rely heavily on the GPS as well to keep the AHRS going. The Max will Red-X if you lose both the IAS and the GPS, for example a power failure whereby you lose both GPS and the pitot tube ices up. They will tell you that outright. The GI 275 AHRS will stay up if you lose both IAS and GPS. Much better unit!! Much more robust math. I also find it has a much better screen. With the legacy AP the GI 275 will not show the AP flight mode. You need to look at the AP itself. Check out my most recent video on GI 275 torture test: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lo2XysGpdM2wqqQ.html

    @@chriskoppel3940 thx for the response. Does the 275 provide for Altitude preselect that your AP will climb to and capture when you set that altitude bug in the top right window or do you have to climb the airplane yourself and then just do an alt hold. I am adding a Stec 55x to my Navion (the only AP approved) and that is a feature beside the FMA display that I desire. Aspen does that but not sure about the Garmin products.

  • @chriskoppel3940

    @chriskoppel3940

    I may be totally wrong, but the way I understand it is that the legacy AP needs to have Altitude preselect either included in its computer or as an external device. I don't think the GI275 will work as the external device for ALT preselect for legacy AP's. Your avionics shop should be able to answer that question much better than me. 😀

  • @GrumpyBumpy

    @GrumpyBumpy

    @@chriskoppel3940 You are correct. Stec has an extra $3K box for alt preselect or the Aspen comes with that function. Plus the AP modes are shown across the top of the Aspen screen. That not seem like a big deal but it should be a workload reducer in the soup.

  • @chriskoppel3940

    @chriskoppel3940

    In spite of having to look at the AP for mode annunciations and requiring the additional $3K unit from Stec for ALT preselect personally I would still choose the GI275 over the Aspen because of its robustness, features and display. Have you checked with the avionics shop about the GI275 providing ALT preselect with the Stec 55x?
