Dual GI 275 upgrade - Flight Director takeoff vs Vacuum driven AI in a Mooney Ovation

Comparing performance of a Flight Director on the Attitude Indicator of a GI 275 vs that on a vacuum driven KI 256. The solid state AI of the GI 275 is significantly more stable than the one on the KI 256 and actually truly helps in maintaining correct attitude during an IFR takeoff. The FD in the KI 256 jumps all over the place and ends up lower than the preset pitch with resulting lower flatter climb out and lower VSI if one follows its commands.

    Thank you Scott! I am doing one specifically on its interaction with my KFC 150 autopilot and using GPSS mode that the 275 emulates. Hope to have it published this weekend. Takes some time to edit... About $17,500 to $18Kincluding OAT probe and USB ports (GSB-15) which are very useful and worth the additional ~$500. Also includes wiring to the GDL-69 in the back of the plane (~8 hrs labor). No expense to make new panel since they fit in existing round holes. However, small cost to make hole covers and move engine monitor to top right.

    Thank you for your comment John!! Greatly appreciate it! Definitely can use top button for all the functions you mentioned, however the default is baro and therefore have to touch the desired field first and then twist the inner button for either HDG or ALT. The bottom button's default is HDG and can just turn it to change heading or press it to sync to current heading. To change course you have to press on the CRS field and then twist the button. I prefer to save one step requiring pressing the HDG field on the top and simply "go for the money" in one step. 😀 Thank you again!! Hopefully more coming soon.

    Nice set of detailed videos. I am in the process right now of installing a second G5 in my Twin Comanche. If I didn't already have a G5, I probably would have installed a pair of GI275s. How's the scan now that the legacy airspeed indicator and altimeter instruments have been removed? I find the presentation on the GI275 (or G5 for that matter) much too small to function as a true standalone PFD.

Do not miss the six-pack at all!!! It is all in one place and very easy to read and interpret. The difference between the 275 and G5 is like night and day. Hi Curt, No problem reading or interpreting in turbulence at all. They are relatively small instruments but Garmin has done a great job making the key numbers stand out - ASI, ALT, HDG, CRS as.well as other pertinent info. My main complaint which is also the major complaint that Garmin has received from othe users is that the GPSS selection for the autopilot is buried 3 levels deep in the menu for the ADI+AHRS+AP top unit. They have promised to change that.

    Reputable and a shop that keeps busy and organized is great! GPSS works great on the GI275. When it is active the HDG bug turns hollow, otherwise it is solid magenta on pure HDG mode. The way GPSS works depends on the autopilot with which it is connected. For example for the KFC 150 I have it is emulated and therefore I need to have my autopilot on HDG and change the mode (HDG -> GPSS) on the 275. It will then send the KFC 150 heading info to follow the GPS course. Other autopilots work in "native" mode and I presume that therefore you make the GPSS selection on the autopilot and it will take the course directly from the 275 without any need for changing the setting on the 275. I believe the HDG bug will then remain solid for "native" GPSS. What I don't like and is the significant major complaint to Garmin is that the GPSS vs HDG selection on the 275 is buried 3 levels deep in the menu. In a busy IFR environment this can be distracting. Hope that answered your question.

    Savagecub…The dual cue, Sperry, “Dancing Snake” is selectable on both the G5 and the GI 275. The Collins, single cue is the default FD and the one most folks seem to use. Personally, I prefer the dual cue. Once you become accustomed to it, you can shoot a tighter approach than with a single cue, especially when the display is small like the G5 and GI 275. A side note to remember when using a FD…always look through the FD to ensure the commanded attitude is correct. FD’s do fail. I have seen them fail without flags. One should always know the desired attitude for the particular phase of flight. The pilot is always the final judge and solution to the automation.

    So you have both units set up as ADI+AHRS (+AP) for the top unit and ADI+AHRS lower unit? That is interesting. So can you still use the lower 275 as an HSI also? Do you have all the map functions on the lower unit and the upper unit? Curious why you did not go with a 275 MFD for your EIS system?

    Hi John, The bottom unit is an ADI+AHRS and IS configured as an MFD / Standby ADI. So it has all the pages of an MFD including HSI and HSI map. I didn't get a 275 to use as an EIS because my G4 works very well. I would have gotten a 275 as an EIS if it were able to display both EGT AND CHT on the SAME page. Unfortunately it appears they don't. I believe if you have angraphical engine monitor you should display bot parameters to be able to diagnose right away engine problems and differentiate between detonation and preignition. On the other hand, nice features of the Garmin unit acying as primary instrumebt gauge, alarms, etc.....

    Hi Lionel, I really like the Ovation. Lots of HP (at sea level). Very efficient at altitude when running it Lean of Peak. Can get 15+ NM/Gal at 15,000 feet. Good speeds at LOP. However, for flying out west or over weather a turbocharged Mooney is better, either 252, Bravo or Acclaim. I have owned two 252s and two Bravo’s. 252 is more fuel efficient although shorter body than Bravo. Higher ceiling (28,000 ft) than Bravo. Lower HP though. Post 1984 J model is a great airplane (or any variation of the J post 1984). My first airplane was a 1984 201 which I flew over the Caribbean to Venezuela and flew to Angel Falls with it. Did the trip at 10,000 feet. Good altitude for the J. 200 HP IO360. Pick your most frequent missions and then figure out if you need a turbocharged plane for those. If not then the Ovation is the best choice. Superb engine with great efficiency at LOP. If you plan shorter trips and below 10,000 feet most of the time then a J is great. Sold each one for different reasons. Could have kept any. Turbocharged were more expensive to maintain. 201 and Ovation less engine maintenance costs. Long winded answer….

    The display backup switch is to manually set the bottom standby ADI as the ADI at anytime. You can do that if you notice a discrepancy and the units don't switch automatically, or for any other reason. It is required per STC when you have them set up as ADI+AHRS (+AP) for the top unit and ADI+AHRS on bottom unit and therefore working as ADI for top and standby ADI/MFD for bottom.

  • @chriskoppel3940

    @chriskoppel3940

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Cvlenjnir, I do not miss the other steam engines at all. Took a couple of VFR flights to get used to the new setup and not depending on needle movements and positions for reference. I did own a Mooney Bravo with a G1000 so reading tapes was not that big of an issue even if I had owne/d this Ovation for 3-1/2 years before installing the GI-275’s. I find the steam gauges would be distracting since the 275’s provide a lot more info and one could be looking everywhere and not focusing on key info during an IFR flight. The other issue is if that you kept the vacuum pump to keep the original AI it would mean two points of failure and confusion. I felt the ASI and Altimeter would introduce distarction as well as points of failure in the pitot-static system. The diaphragm in the ASI can get weak. The second unit acts as a perfect backup in case the top one fails. It automatically reverts to ADI to get you were you need to go safely. They each have a 1 hr battery if your alternator and battery dies. Also have a VFR GPS in case you loose GPS from your navigators. Great units and great choice for your plane!! Less stuff in the panel also allows for better air circulation to cool the other instruments. I have flown several approaches in IMC, both ILS and RNAV approaches and they work beautifully! Very stable and reliable. All the info you want and need is there. There are a couple of items that could be better. First, when flying an ILS the 530W will not auto switch the CDI on the 275 from GPS to VLOC. You have to do so manually when intercepting the final approach course. The GTN’s (650 and 750) will auto switch. The other thing that Garmin says they will change in the next software upgrade is how to enable and disable GPSS. For autopilots that do not have native GPSS the top unit (ADI+AHRS+AP) will emulate GPSS for the autopilot and you have to have the autopilot in HDG mode. To get to the GPSS function you have to go 3 levels deep in the menu which is a pain when busy in IMC. I use it when cleared for an approach and know that I will not be given any further heading changes. The heading bug on the HSI becomes disabled when in GPSS mode and so one needs to go back into the menu to be able to run the autopilot in HDG mode. Once the GPSS feature is either on the main screen as a toggle field or in the first menu level then it will be less cumbersome to use. I will be dong a video soon on GPSS with the 275’s. Hope that answered most of your questions. Enjoy your new 275’s when you get them installed!!
