Yeah Ill be getting it for the ship stuff as my party has been mad keen to take to the seas , so much so I crafted a sailing ship terrain from insulation foam card board and tooth picks. I have spent the last few weeks 3d printing ocean creatures and small bottom of the ocean scatter terrain like corals and such . SO this has become a MUST BUY item.

John Martin pretty sure there’s some unearthed arcana for ship combat out there as well. Matt Mercer used some a while back in campaign 2 of critical role
I’ve been running mines of phandelver for just under a year (in game) and soon they’ll be finished (I tried to line the final encounter up with winter) and so I decided I’d be bringing the oncoming war I’ve been planning to their town after they’re finished and made phandelin a home. I’m gonna burn it while they are on a trip to the big city, run through some quick adventures on land, use my reacurring npc who is an heir to the sea throne to introduce a plot hook for the sea. These would be kinda perfect.

Thanks for showing me how to use this book. When I first cracked it open, the skim was rather daunting. Thanks for a single video summarizing everything.
I pre-ordered this one when there was a weird discount on Amazon. After this brief review I am still happy and excited to get my hands on this.
I'll be running it on Saturday. I know you spoke about ships combat, I've love to know if you tried the rules out? I altered them slightly to speed things up. Overall loved the book.
I ordered the book, and couldn't wait for your review. Best one on KZread by far, loved it and can't wait to get my copy.
I’ve always found it good to have a nautical adventure on the back burner during any campaign, as a way to either break up the pattern of the adventure, or add in a cool travel sequence! Support your LGS! (And be a patron for your favorite content creators!)
This will be one of my favorite WOTC releases for 5e. Standalone modules that can also be used as a campaign is perfect. I hope they have detailed Saltmarsh as well as they did in the 3.0 DMG II I am really looking forward to this. Thanks for the review.
I added this to my cart on Amazon a few days ago. Your review reinforced my choice to buy it especially that I have TftYP already. My friends are hyped to be on naval battles. Thanks for the review!
Thanks Nate, been out of the D&D realm for a while, your vid was extremely helpful. Im one of the OGs who got his first basic set back in 1982 w The keep on the Borderlands! good times
I like short stuff too. It lets folks decide on what to do week to week to keep things fresh. It looks like fun, definitely one to consider. Great review, many thanks.
Picking mine up at B&N today woo!!
Great review! This is definitely a book I'm getting.
I wish all these books had new spells, features, items, and monsters.
Very good review. Thank you.
Been here since 60k subs. Loves your vids. Keep it up.
so excited for this!!! I always thought the pirate sub-backroad was really fun to play. I wanna try getting into DMing and I think I might start with this!
Thanks! This helped. I think I hear the sounds of the ocean calling my party now. Best thing is that its modular because I'm running this in AL with very sporadic player numbers.
YARR! That is all :-) Thanks Nate - good review as always. Tempted to pick this up, especially for the village description chapter.
Thank you kindly for lingering on the pages in the appendix for so long. ;)
Based on your closing, pick up all the Tom Moldvey adventures. Especially ‘Castle Amber’ and ‘The Lost City’ a ton of inspiration from those.
Oh mang, I love tales from the yawning portal so I will probably pick this up
Just now picked it up from my local hobby shop.
I believe I remember Saltmarsh showing up as a proper City in a 3.5e supplement back in the day. I have forgotten which one.

Great video, Nate!
I'm about to start running a homebrew based on Treasure Island and the ship stuff could have been very useful, but I found a naval combat supplement on the DM's Guild that's very handy for what I have in mind.
Can’t believe Saltmarsh is here in 5e.. My FIRST campaign was in the Keep On The Boarderlands/Caves Of Chaos and Saltmarsh as well.... This was in 3.5.. Wow
I wasn't really interested in this before, but after watching this video, it looks really cool, I might have to invest

All in all, the book seems pretty cool. The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh was one of the first modules I played back in the old days, and I loved the spooky atmosphere. Still highly disapointed there seems to be no Selkie player option, which in a haunted English inspired Port town should be a no brainer. I like the ship rules, though it seems like other boat types were short changed. Where are Viking longships, Roman triremes and Pacific Isle catamarans? Either way, I'm looking forward to it.
Excellent review! Will add it to collection. Love the sea theme.
I've seen the special edition cover in Amazon for a while now
There's a picture of a Juvenile Kraken in the book, and. I find it hilarious, since the description makes it sound disgustingly horrifying, while the art is just adorable.

I gotta buy Yawning Portal and this book together haha
You look at your books in your reviews as hard limits. To me they are guides and i can cut up swap chop and paste together parts to make my own stuff.. for example your comment on the magical upgrades for ships...
bring back the ghost walk campaign might make this awesome
When a special edition cover doesn’t look like garbage. I can tell this book is going to give me ideas for my halloween horror campaign inspired by H.P. Lovecraft.
How would I draw ice burgs on a map
Not sold. I wpuld mainly want it for the expanded rules for ship shenanigans as a DM. You seemed to be quite 'nice' in your appraisal of the appendices but it seemed like you wanted to say more. I am going to have a gander at the tribality book and see what they have in store. I agree with you about modular = good and usable. It seems like my SKT group might be grinding to a halt after a super satisfying but incomplete use of the adventure.

MONSTERS YAY
I absolutely hate the black and white Dyson maps. I'm paying $50 for inspiration and story telling, I don't want to be staring at some graph paper. Color maps are so much more inspiring and immersive as the story teller. So incredibly disappointed.
It's great to support local businesses, but unfortunately lots if people don't have a local shop for role-playing at all. I imagine that WotC thought that making everyone outside big cities wait for the new hotness in the internet era was a bit pointless.

I’m not using anything that Stan! wasn’t a part of.
I've been disappointed by you and others reviewing GoS as a random grouping of Adventures like TYP. I've been seeing (and waiting) for this as a 1-12 campaign. Without having the book but having the original U1 - U3 plus finding the original Dungeon adventures, which from the looks of most of the art is from, this is a very flowing campaign with the Stys becoming a secondary base. Just my opinion, YMMV.
But how do you play the story
I've been making a nautical themed setting using one piece as skeleton I'm sure this book will help.

Could give a crap about the art. It's about the story lol.
Dyson logos... gross I don’t really appreciate his style just not for me or the kind of game I want to run. Just creates more work for me. A lot more work.
That's alternative cover is the best art I've seen on a d&d 5th book yet. The art in the book looks as awful as the rest if the 5e art unfortunately...
More images less u
The art was mostly repurposed from the older Dungeon releases. Somewhat lazy IMO.
This is the first special edition cover that I really dislike. I just don't like the artwork.

It’s definitely a more cartoony vibe. Kinda retro.
Why make a review video for a book that you havent fully read? I wanted to hear about what the adventures were like so this video was pointless for me.
