Well in Ray’s defense, Gozer knew they were no gods she just wanted to mock them with that question. Just because she’s an ancient being don’t mean she doesn’t know sarcasm.

The manner and wording of Ray's cease and desist order is the only reason Gozer interacted with the team before the "choosing of form" phase. Gozer is unfamiliar with our world and for a moment Ray's manner, words, and intent seemed legit. For a moment Gozer was interested. Ray calls it by one of it's Names and one of it's Titles to show familiarity with Gozer as a God-like entity. "Gozer the Gozerian." He follows with a casual statement among peers. "Good evening." Ray offers his own credentials. "As a duly designated representative of the city, county and state of New York," Adds to that an order. "I order you to cease any and all supernatural activity and return forthwith to your place of origin" And concludes by giving an option that suggests multi-dimensional experience. " or to the nearest convenient parallel dimension." After discovering Ray is not a God, Gozer is bored again. The excitement wanes.

Gozer was originally meant to be appear as a man wearing a suit and tie, who the Ghostbusters would mistake for the architect they mentioned designed the building earlier in the movie. Paul "Pee Wee Herman" Reuben was cast for the part, but turned it down due to other projects he was working on at the time. The role ultimately wen to a Serbian model named Slavitza Jovan, but none of the lines you hear in the film were recorded by her; her accent was so heavy that it rendered the dialogue useless-supposedly when she said "Choose and perish!" it came out sounding like "Jews and berries!" and so the lines needed to be dubbed in by another actor afterward.

I think that it wouldn't have made a lick of sense, I think the fact that the whole line of "It'll be what it wants to be!" makes sense considering that it's a spirit and can come forth as a woman or a man or the staypuft marshmallow man or even Ivo Shandor himself (from the video game)

I think Gozer is one of the most underrated villains in cinema history, she was the one who brought all of those ghosts to New York, she tortured the Ghostbusters after them asking her to leave, turned Dana into a hell hound and pretty much made them choose who would kill them and she looks bad ass, why isn't she seen as one of the most sadistic villains of all time, ik she isn't used until the end, but the build up to her/it almost lasted the entire movie

I agree 100%. I rewatched Ghostbusters 2 a few months back and it never dawned on me until all these years later how bad the film was compared to the first one. Bill Murray must've sensed the second one was going to be bad, hence why he didn't want to do it ... and why he wants no part of a third one. With Harold Remis unfortunately deceased, I definitely don't see that one happening now.

Funny you should mention that. In the Ghostbusters comics there's a scenario where Gozer asks Ray if he's a God, and Ray does say yes- and Gozer still blasted him anyway under the logic that this was "his realm now".

This movie will always be a classic I have both of them on DVD. Nothing can top Ghostbusters and I used to watch this every time at my Aunt Grace's house every time we went to NJ. I laughed all the way through this but I was 7 at the time.

Ray when someone asks you if you're a god, you say, "YES!" Winston's original line; Ray, you should've said, "YES!" It might have been willing to negotiate.

The part when they rescue Dana from the Zuul-y thing gets me every time; the way Peter just looks at her is one of the many reasons I ship Deter!

If I had a dollar for every pixel on the screen I'd have 25 cents.

Ray's speech to Gozer was excellent. I mean, you're talking to an interdimensional being that came and brought down ravages unto humanity in the past and was mistaken/worshipped as a God. How exactly do you address it? Well, he first greets it politely, then identifies under what authority he comes forward to make a request, then he makes his request clear and concise and even offers the alternative of returning to the nearest convenient parallel dimension. I can't think of any better way to approach a powerful being like Gozer. As for the "are you a God?" part, saying yes would not have helped. Do you seriously think Gozer's next line would be "oh, you're a God? Ok let me go back to where I came from"?

All Ray really said was “Go away!” But in the smartest way possible. Jesus I love this movie and every line in it.

Wow, everything here is so mysterious, interesting, unsettling, and actually threatening. It makes me feel uncomfortable, where are the neon colored halloween ghosts? Where are the pussy fart jokes? Why are they talking and acting like human beings, instead of slapping each other and screaming one note jokes? Thank god they remade this! *cough*sarcasm*cough*

Yes and no. Gozer does not come back, but they choose a "destroyer" which turns out to be the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man thanks to Ray thinking of it. However, that is the last you hear of Gozer in the film, she doesn't appear in GB2 since Vigo appears in that, but she is referenced in GB3 aka Video Game by both Egon and in the Tobin Spirit Guide and then later on by Ivo Shandor himself as he says something along the lines of that Gozer couldn't get the job done and that he will do what Gozer failed to do.

Ray is so boss. I said " they dont have the containment grid and they didnt bring a trap, what do they do" then ray sneaks that trap in and sets it down. Never noticed that before.

"Ray, this looks extraordinarily bad."

I remember when the Ghostbusters cartoon came out I try to imagine the cartoon version of them playing in the live Ghostbusters movies ever tho they supposed been link up with the movies anyway lol
