Ghostbusters: The REAL Reasons for the Backlash and Controversy

Ойын-сауық

The second Ghostbusters trailer has been released, and not received any better than the first. Sony, director Paul Feig and select news outlets are in full damage control mode, accusing detractors of misogyny left and right. But can the fan rage be dismissed as just that?
In this editorial, @AndreEinherjar gives his thoughts on the REAL reasons behind the fan discontent over 2016.

I heard someone say this before and think about it everytime someone uses the words "strong and independent" to describe women. You're basically saying that they are adults. You literally just described a normal functioning adult and are giving women special credit for this.

In real life what you say is true. In the movies, however, it's sometimes a bit too common for female characters to serve primarily as love interests or "prizes" or for conveying the emotional weight of the story. It's the break from that recurring pattern that makes it noteworthy. In the context of movie characters it's not a matter of giving women special credit for being ordinary, functioning adults; rather it's recognizing the somewhat exceptional case where movies actually _portray_ women as functioning adults.

you know the funny thing, is that most women tend to act more like damsel in distress instead of a strong masculine type female when faced with scary or perilous situations. That's a fact, so to me it's a little unrealistic when Hollywood decides to start making every female "strong and independent" which IMO most women in this country already are. They just don't have to wield a big gun, act masculine and tough. Instead they;re strong and independent while being feminine.

Honestly the biggest reason I think the new Ghostbusters will suck is because the type of "humor" is completely different from the original. The 1984 Ghostbusters is so dry and effortlessly witty. This new one comes across more like an Adam Sandler flick.

Reason it was destined to fail with gals or guys is cause they don't make movies like these nowadays. It was predictable they would make the remake too jokey. Ghostbusters was made by a bunch of guys that just wanted to make a cool movie with things in it they would like regadless if it's funny or scary whatever. But right now a studio will say "either make it scarier or more funny!". GB was great cause it was organic, it was written naturally without agenda like made from a cereal box.

The likelihood that they'd bottle lightning twice and on a reboot is so miniscule that it is much more likely that Murray and Ackroyd are lying than telling the truth. And you can make that assumption even without knowing anything about the new movie. All you have to do is have an appreciation for the first movie to know that the likelihood that a reboot or sequel could be better than the first movie is tiny.

Claim that they won't see it, then turn right around and go see it just so that they can bitch about it even more, or rent it online and stream it that way... like that somehow MAGICALLY won't count as going to see the movie (and forking over money to Sony for it). The only way to hurt them is to NOT SEE THE F*CKING MOVIE IN THE FIRST PLACE! Don't go to the theaters, don't stream it online, don't pick up the DVD or BlueRay when it's released. Make Sony f*uckin' scared of EVER doing this sort of sh*t, again. Hopefully, no studio will ever hire Feig again, either.

The whole James Rolfe thing put me over the edge with this movie. When I first saw the Ghostbusters trailer, it didn't look funny and I didn't really have any interest in seeing it. But then I started so see a blind defense of it. And then the SJW mob attacked James for simply saying that he's bias due to his nostalgia for the first movies and refuses to see this new one because it just looks like a cash grab. He made a completely reasonable video, and people lost their shit (calling him a sexist, blah, blah, blah.) I went from someone who was pretty indifferent to the new Ghostbusters to somebody who is hoping/dreaming/wishing that this bullshit fails. I have genuine hatred for this movie, sight unseen.

  • @briansager3744

Honest question, how would you want this continuation to happen? Murray has said for 20 years that he wouldn't make another one. Surely you can't bring back the other guys without Murray right? Even lately, Ramis is obviously dead, and Ackroyd has lost his mind. So how would a continuation be more satisfying than a reboot of you weren't bringing back the original cast anyway?

  • @WinterSoldierLTE

    @WinterSoldierLTE

Brian Sager Honestly I'm not one of those people that thinks the original is a high point of comedy. It's funny, absolutely it cracks me up, but there are other comedies I hold in higher regard ('Airplane!' is one of my personal favorites). I grew up w/ Ghostbusters like a lot of other people, had all the toys, watched the cartoon, all that. But when I was a kid I didn't even realize it was a comedy because the jokes were for an older audience. It wasn't until I picked it up on DVD about 8 years ago that I finally "got it" because I hadn't seen it since I was 10 and even then I actually enjoyed the 2nd one more. So with that said, I would be perfectly ok with a straight up re-boot *or* a continuation w/ the original cast members passing the torch as mentioned here. As I said, if it makes me laugh and keeps me entertained I would be happy and ok with it. But this re-boot just doesn't look funny at all. I don't keep up with SNL and haven't for years so I don't know the 2 from there or their style of comedy and I've never seen a Melissa McCarthy movie because all of her stuff looks un-funny to me, 'Tammy' especially which is one she wrote. May be a bit of a taboo mindset to have w/ 'Ghostbusters' in some peoples eyes, but that's where I stand with it.

The first movies had talented comedic actors that could pull off the hokiest line with a straight face, while the remake is dumbed down slapstick that insults the intelligence of its audience. If this director thinks he's going to make anyone cower in guilt over not shelling out their hard earned money to see this tripe - because misogyny! - he really has got another thing coming. But yeah, even if a woman directed it, it would still be shite. (And yes, I do agree with your Paul Feig jab. What a child.)

Don't forget the "Girl Power" photo they shared with the whole female part of the studio. It's kind of sad if they think they're actually promoting something positive while instead they're conflating this bigotry. Also, Paul Feig is married to a woman since 1994. His personal quirks, the way he dresses sometimes and his childish outbursts somewhat hint to him being somehow emasculated. Also, more relevant male cast is involved. Chris Hemsworth has had a more consistent career lately than any of these girls internationally and the studio still bribed the original GB (nearly sued Murray) to appear in cameos so they could cash in nostalgia.

Of course strong, name one lead character that doesn't develop (or already is) strength of some sort during their developmental arc. And when was the last time you saw an ugly character in a movie, male OR female (aside from The Elephant Man, but that was the point to it)? You know it's very true how the original film had careful consideration for spiritualism. In fact the video game also had this intriguing lore of of an old cult that made a pact with zuul and these Mandala Nodes that you had to find and destroy. Sort of like these magic circles with witchcraft engraved in it. So it's baffling how we went from that to a bullied hotel worker that uses a McGuffin machine that "somehow" can summon ghosts. That's just really lazy writing.

Exactly. I'm a researcher, and a couple of the subjects that I study are Mythology and several subjects that fall under the very large umbrella of 'Spiritual Studies'. At the time of the first movie, his information may not have been perfect, but it did come from the actual research from the time. Some of the spectral spectacles were fudged for the sake of comedy or effect, but they were never completely made up, and that really adds to the feel of the movie. Even setting that aside, as you said, it was at least smartly written and made sense in the purview of the movie. Comparing that to the excuse shown in the trailer is like comparing George Orwell to Stephanie Meyer. One knows real suspense, horror, and storytelling, and the other kind of uses things associated with horror in the past.

cptrichall For me, it all comes down to staying close to actual spirituality or magick rules according to lore or, conversely, how the technology fits in with the rest of the series. Inherently, both can be used to the same effect, but it depends on how they are used. A nuclear accelerator strapped to someones back that can shoot a beam that can catch a ghost in the air and carry it into a trap and stick it into a holding facility is no more or less silly than a set of circles with witchcraft symbols or a machine that can call ghosts...at least, in the concept stage. What it comes down to is how its explained and used, and while the proton pack and the stones make sense in the ghostbusters lore, what we know of ghosts denies the idea of a manmade device that can summon them. Here are the questions: 1. How did the person in question learn about said ghosts? There were no ghostbusters or major ghost events before this, so this is a stretch. 2. How does the machine 'call' or 'pull' the ghosts from their own space? Alternatively, what about it makes ghosts already around in the region suddenly able to materialize and effect things more than before? 3. What would be the reason behind building such a device? Most of these can be more easily explained using magic, as lore already dictates several hundred 'spiritual hotspots' from differing mythologies that one can pull from. Its harder to explain technology, but easier to explain said technology if ghosts already existed in their current form to be used as test subjects. Ultimately, it feels like a Danny Phantom ripoff as opposed to Ghostbusters for now. It might be better explained in the movie, but since we know that nobody is taking this seriously combined with the problems that a reboot provides, it is unlikely that we can anticipate an acceptable response from the film to explain it.

It seems like too much time has gone by and too much dumb crap has happened in Ghostbusters 2 particularly to make any kind of continuity more difficult than it's worth. Once a major attack on NYC happens and the whole world has undeniable evidence that we could be under attack by supernatural god / demons at any time... Our culture, science, religion, everything would be different. Proton packs might be consumer products and Ghostbusters may be as common as exterminators now... Ghost rights advocates would pop up, Apple would make an iGhost, the ghost powered phone... There would be an agency of homeland paranormal protection or something... There just wouldn't he room for an actual Ghostbusters like story where some outcast misfits of science get together and stop something no one else even officially believes in.. which is what made Ghostbusters ghostbusters. Ironically to be true to the feeling of the first movie you would almost HAVE to abandon it. I mean you *could* do it, but is it worth it to spend half the movie

This is exactly the reason that the new film looks terrible, it's treating it like a parody of the original and not even taking into account that when they were dealing with the situation in the first film, they took it seriously and acted like it was an actual apocalyptic threat and there was little to no slapstick. I am honestly surprised that Dan Akroyd agreed to do a cameo in a film that doesn't even do it's research into the paranormal since he's an expert in the occult.

You spoke my mind! Here’s my take on the whole “Ghostbusters 2016” fiasco. It has been nearly thirty years since the second movie was made and fans have had to deal with broken promises and false hopes of their being a return of the original caste. After the death of Harold Ramis, this false hope is finally laid to rest but then less than a year later Hollywood jumps at the opportunity to throw together a movie, which seems irrelevant to the original film and pointless to those that have had their hearts set for Ghostbusters 3. Although there is still much confusion regarding whether this is a “reboot” or a “remake,” in the end it does not matter to fans because as a whole, the film seems to almost completely ignore the events of the previous films. The preview does not do any favors in that it shows the new caste redoing original scenes from the movie which, whether Feig admits it or not, places it in the “remake” category. The fact the director claims that the appearances of the original cast members are ‘cameos’ leads us to believe they will not be reprising their original characters and will only have small roles in the movie. Whether or not it was right or wrong for Feig to have gender swapped the roles, it was obvious from the start this would do the movie no favors. From the beginning, the media and Feig constantly portrayed this decision as being motivated by a desire to make a political statement and further the cause of feminism. I think Feig and the media strongly over emphasized the movie as being the Ghostbusters with the ALL FEMALE CASTE’ rather than simply focusing on humor, the storyline, and chemistry of the actresses so the public incidentally interpreted this as a disrespectful attempt to use the beloved ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise as a vehicle to further the political views of Feig over pleasing the fandom. Although most supporters of the film blame sexism as being the sole reason for the heat this movie is receiving, I personally disagree. The new Star Wars for the first time placed a female as the lead character and it has, for the most part, been universally embraced and praised by fans. However, if the new Star Wars had instead been marketed as a remake and completely ignore earlier events of the previous movies as well as the original characters I have no doubt it would be receiving the same kind of heat as well. Instead, they took the reasonable and respectful route and marketed it as a “sequel” and brought back the original characters to help support the younger caste. Rather than the focus being laid on Star Wars finally getting a female lead, it was over where the story would pick up from episode 6? What had become of the original caste? Who are the villains? What roles will the new caste serve? Instead all we get with the new ghostbusters is IT HAS AN ALL FEMALE CASTE. A FEMALE CASTE! The original caste will be making cameos. DID WE MENTION IT HAS AN ALL FEMALE CASTE? In the end, I see this incident as a case of disconnect between the director and fans with the ultimate fault lying with Paul Feig’s poor decisions in marketing, writing, and failure to relate to the franchise's fandom. Nothing more and nothing less. His insulting comments toward the fan base didn't help ei

Yes! This helps clarify something: the problem isn't just that the writing is terrible, the actresses are mugging and shucking and jiving their way through their parts, and the jokes fall flat -- it's that the people behind this film think Ghostbusters is a comedy first and foremost. No, it's a horror movie into which funny people have wandered! And even then they're funny people who know when to stop cracking wise and start reacting to serious threats AS serious threats. It's the difference between Oscar Wilde and the Farrely Brothers, between Margaret Atwood and Chuck Tingle.

It would have been so simple to have the movie begin with the failure of the containment system from the original, and the daughter(s) of the original Ghostbusters working to clear their family name and even having to innovate and create new gear because those pesky spirits have grown and figured out how to beat the original containment equipment, hence their escape. Maybe even throw in a cameo by the original cast, just to seal the deal!

The RoboCop remake made me livid in a way that no other film ever had. I was in a horrid mood when I heard about it and even worse when I actually say it. The moment they tossed out the original color scheme and mocked it, I literally screamed "FUCK YOU!" at the screen. That said, what I feel for the new Ghosterbusters is beyond that... but not with anger. I'm not angry with the movie, just sad. So sad. I love the original, it was one of the first DVDs I ever purchased, it's a classic... and what they're doing is destroying that. It's like defacing a national monument, the people who did claiming that it made it better, then calling anybody who disagrees with it some PC SJW bullshit bastardization of a proper term to fit their narrative that what they did was a good thing. This morons do not know real hate, they do not know real oppression, they do not have any understanding of what they're talking about; they just throw around words to shield themselves from criticism. They've going out of their way to ruin something people love, and when people call them out, it's the fan who is evil. No, motherfucker, it's you who is evil, you corrupt everything you touch with your twisted ideology, unable to see anything beyond your own narrative and goals while expecting everybody to bow down. You lie, you manipulate, you destroy, all in the name of your own ends, incapable of allowing yourself to see that you are not a flawless, perfect lamb amidst the horrible lion's den. I can only hope that this movie bombs so hard that Feig and everybody like him who took part in this never find work again. I hope this crushes the hopes and dreams of all the narrative driven fools who see this as some icon so they are forced to see the reality that the movie is a piece of garbage. I want them to see that all the bullshit narrative and twisting of words and concepts can never make up for a lack of talent, a lack of comedy, a lack of atmosphere, a lack of actual CRAFT.

That is true, but in that case, why bother having a remake made? +Warren “Phoenix2312” Marris clash of the titans remake made me rage as well. the original was camp, but not cheese. the harryhausen effects were endearing, but would admittedly be a no-sell except to diehard fans of the original or of harryhausen, but FOR CERTAIN modern stopmotion, modeling, and practical effects with minimal or no cgi would have been the way to go. as far as conan, obviously you cant REPLACE "Ahnold" but the new actor was SO bland, vanilla, and totally forgettable and unrelatable, and the supporting cast of the original portrayed the requisite sword and sorcery tropes perfectly, unlike in the remake.

I have seen much of your videos thus far, and in doing so I was hooked up to the whole situation with your Trankgates special. Is very interesting to see that in many ways, this whole mess with GBs almost mimics the same path as the whole debacle with Fant4stic. 1)Social Media Meltdowns with the Directors: checked. 2)Both Directors couldn't handle critisimn very pentuantly for the way they were taking the films (only Difference, Trank was fired and someone else had to come in to complete the film, Feig stayed). 3)Budget constraints: I can't remember what was the budget for Fant4stic, but I undertand it was cut extensively, but Tom Rothman cut GBs 2016 budget to 100 million from the original Budget Amy Pascal left behind. 4)Differences with Cast and Director: Trank nearly went to trade blows with Miles Teller and was vissibly mean towards Kate Mara, Paul Feig and Meghan McCarthy had been reported to had clashed (differences of Opinion) on set, but worsen by the fact there are reported collisions of Ego between McCarthy and another cast member, where as the Fant4stic stars kinna bounded together during Josh Trank's reign of Terror. 5)In order to fight all critique, The Studio, the production, SJW's and News Outlets accused Fans and the Fandom in General for been Racists do to the comments of an asshole minority, puttting them all together on the same pedastal: checked - Only differences was Racism with Fant4stic, here is that with Misogyny added, but still checked with Sony been more systematic in its attack on critics. 6)Systematic control of the information/censorship: Checked, only difference - On Fant4stic, Fox went on a Cease and Desist Spree on News Sites do to the Social Media leaks of Trank, here Sony did worst - they had been going on False DMCA's all over youtube and deleting the Comments critical of the film on their main YT channel, as well deleting Women comments on the film. 7)Cast went to promote the film much: do to their obligations the Stars at Fant4stic have to go on tour to promote the film as much as possible after so much negative criticism was expected to affect adversely the film, as of now GBs stars are beginning to promote and defend the Movie, with Dan Aykroyd and Megha McCarthy been the first to speak out, with McCarthy villianfying the fans even more. 8) Despite all the NDAs signed and all the false DMCAs it hasn't stop the leaks at all - the fact the movie's story was leaked on reddit months ago by a disgruntle worker at the production pretty much got fully confirmed by the Trailers themselves. 9)Much like Fox with the inmense negative reaction to Fant4stic, Sony is in full panic mode, and in full honesty, they really dunno who to deal with it outside from my No.5 point, but nothing that they say or do, seems to quiet all the hatred for this movie down, and they are well aware of how that went well with Fant4stic, this has to be specially more so for Rothman who is force to deliver a tentpole movie Amy Pascal failed to delivered properely (outside of Spiderman) during her tenure at Sony. And that the concerns to the Negative reaction to the film could ruin the possibilities of this reboot becoming a franchise. Anything else I missed.

Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray were SNL alum. Harold Ramis was from SCTV and had already written such hits as Meatballs, Caddyshack, and Stripes (having worked with Bill Murray on the last two). Ernie Hudson was the dark horse of the cast, having little to no background in comedy, but coming from a TV background where he had various one-episode roles in shows like The Dukes of Hazard, Webster, The Odd Couple and the A-Team. So it was a decent mix of a cast that had already proven themselves and weren't one-trick ponies. Even Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett was genius casting as at the time she had little (none?) experience in comedy, but was know most well for playing Ripley in the the scifi horror Alien. So she was able to bring that to the table and really deliver once she was possessed by Zuul.

I feel like if this had been "Ghostbusters: The New Haunt", was a sequel to the original instead of a reboot, and had been more of a passing of the torch kind of deal with Akroyd giving it to the new cast, and they tried to adhere more to the spirit of the original series with modern enhancements, it wouldn't have been disliked nearly as much. I didn't even know it was a reboot till the trailer came out and while I didn't hate the trailer like some people did, it just seemed like a really bad choice to make. *EDIT* Also wrote the above idea before it came up in the video, so apparently I was right on with this idea lol

Its funny that so many feminists think this is mostly hated because they're women. People will just hate anything with women as a lead. That is flat out wrong. Legend of Korra has a female lead and while some did not like her it wasn't because she was a female. They hated her attitude. Many would still accept that she was a good character even though they did not like her. As her character grew the fans grew to like her and in the end she was worthy of her title as Avatar. The Internet loves having strong female leads but feminists believe that a female lead is good enough and if you hate a female lead then you hate women. Ironically it's feminists holding women back. It's like how games media treated the poor gameplay of Doom as gamers not wanting to let a person bad at video games to partake in video games. They completely missed the point. We love people who suck at video games. We can't get enough. but this footage was to show Doom at its best but the recorder could not do so

Damn right! I can like or dislike a character based on personality, not gender. I just saw Gay Puree with Judy Garland recently, and I hated her character. Because she was self centered and didn't give a damn about anybody but herself, when people like Robert Goulet's character really cared about her. On the other hand, Belle from Beauty and the Beast will always remain one of my favorite characters, because she is such a well rounded character with one of the all time great voice performances. I did not at one point bring up gender, it's not hard. It's annoying when people just assume things.

Excellent analysis. Its exactly the reason why the casting of Ben Afleck was so controversial in Batman vs Superman. Something Denny ONeil said also comes to mind from the time when they killed Robin (Jason Todd) in the Batman book (from memory),"I realized that the Batman and the Superman editor are not just editors of a book, they are the custodians of folklore." And its the same with anything that has entered into the collective conscious of fandom. And its another reason why remakes seldom work. The classic version becomes common folklore and belongs to all the fans and not just the creators.(at least in perception and reaction) As you noted, fans can handle sequels (though they may still gripe about them to some extent) But, a complete reboot offends that common shared experience and folklore of the original.

I would consider myself a feminist in the sense that I support equality across the board. That doesn't mean I'm going to blindly support a film because it has an all female cast. There's something special about classic films, especially from the 80's, that today's reboots can almost never capture. Since the selling point for this film appears to be literally "they're women, if you don't like this movie then you hate women and are a misogynistic asshole!!!11!!", they're only testing the waters to see what else they can gender-bend. Gender-bending an original work and claiming it has new value is a cheap way of claiming that women are being well represented in media, and it's a very poor disguise for making more money. There are better ways of showing audiences strong female leads, which is through an original creation (which is almost impossible to find anymore).

I love Lara Croft and would either want to see Angelina Jolie reprise the role as Lady Croft in hopefully a 3rd film or else get an even stronger and more dominant actress to play the part. Wonder Woman needs to be a badass because, afterall, she is an Amazonian princess warrior and if not Wonder Woman than Red Sonja but instead of redoing a story that's already been done before and tweak it a bit, just make a sequel. I bet a lot of you have never seen the movie "Bad Girls" its about four women in the old west being pushed around too far and they joined forces and raised hell. They don't have careers because they're funny; they have careers because the entertainment industry has an ideologic vested interest in promoting female "stars".Put four women in this movie who actually are good comedians - and fix the other problems as well - and this movie could actually work. Yet another example of politics trumping theatre, with disastrous results.

Good commentary. It sounds like the studio doesn't understand the demographic it's marketing to and its trying to recover by intentionally driving the buzz south. It's hard to replace the actors/characters of the originals. Those guys had the right chemistry as well as the classic '80s humor to pull it off. So you're on the money when you say they should be going for next-generation Ghostbusters instead of a remake.

Here is why I hate the look of the film. A small amount of it DOES have to do with the all female team. I don't have a problem with an all female team, but I do have a problem with them remaking the original and replacing the original beloved team with an all female team. But the big 2 problems are the ghosts and the humor. The ghosts look really bright and colorful, and it looks like they have taken away most, if not all, of the scariness from the ghosts. And the humor is groan inducing.

Your analysis sounds point on but I haven't given up on the new movie yet. A trailer is not a movie. We'll see what comes out in the end. Your points on what made the original movie so popular are very well taken. There may also be a problem with the new soundtrack which had a lot to do with the success of the original film.

Honestly half the hate this movie has gotten is just becuase of sony "damage control. This is what's wrong with these movements and current society; if you make something public that has a gay, trans, or female character you can just blame sexism or homophobic, etc instead of just accepting that you released a crap movie. I make Lego creations; if I were to name one creation as gay do you know how much hate I'd get if I disregarded every comment and called the entire website homophobic? If that stupid excuse wouldn't work for me it shouldn't work for these people in power.

That's Neo-Liberalism to you... in the 70ies, when Civil Rights Movements and the Feminist movment began (and were necessary), all those suits in the companies spit and hated on them. Now it is more common to be a feminist or part of a minority (in Western countries at least) and Neo-Liberalism just absorbed this notion, twisted it and found a way to make money with it. And if it's misfires, well than that's the publics fault. Seriously, neither Paul Feig, nor the woman in charge of the GB-reboot really care about strong female leads in their Ghostbuster movie. All they see is a popular name and a new way to marked it... sad but true.

What people who defend the film don't realize, is that if it was an all "male" cast, It would receive substantially more hate from all over, because it wouldn't have people trying to defend something that they know is objectively bad just for the sake of their own misguided agendas.

An easy way to explain it is like this; if this were a remake made by Adam Sandler and had all male, people would still hate it because we have seen the track record of this guy when it comes to pushing comedy too hard in a poor attempt to be funny. If anything, the remake feels like something Adam Sandler would make as his trademark 'jokes' are there as well as his character types. If someone competent had been in charge and we saw actual TALENT in the script, people would be hyped as shit. Yes, there is no doubt there would be a lot of sexist assholes out there, there will always be people like that, but we would have a majority who would WANT this to be the summer movie of 2016 but we are not getting that. We're just getting another general 20k 'comedy'.

People all also resorting to "the original was a remake" argument. No, it's a homage. A homage takes elements of a certain franchise or genre but does its own thing. That is NOT a remake. Trying to argue that GHOSTBUSTERS 1984 is a remake is like trying to say that the original STAR WARS was a Flash Gordon remake.

Except I don't remember Hasbro playing that particular trap card when seeking blame for Jem and the Holograms 2015 failing. Then again they rolled out a successful Jem and the Holograms comic that year with IDW. Sony doesn't even have that going for them in a Ghostbusters 2016 inspired comic with, again, IDW, to try and swing things around. Maybe IDW knew better with International.

This is the Reboot Inheritor Age, where it's all about packaging the past to sell to your vision of the Next Generation. As envisioned by a man whose past successes involved documentaries about Justin Beiber.

I.e. what you think the Next Generation will buy wholesale and lap up. Present past gen fandom need not imply... even if they're the heart and soul of the franchise in question. Doing a reboot Ghostbusters IDW comic style? Good idea. Doing a completely from scratch reboot marketing only to the Next Generation if hand picked fans? Bad.

  • @SuperCosmicMutantSquid

+DarkeRaven09 Looking back into Jem, Hasbro also didn't bank that much money into it compared to Transformers or even the GI Joe movies, even though the guy who directed the Jem movie also worked on the GI Joe movies. Jem also wasn't pushed as hard as Ghostbusters despite BOTH being staples of 80s animation fandom and both having large enough fanbases of both old fans and new to know what the show is. GRANTED, I will argue that as much love Jem has, Ghostbusters IS a bigger series and has gotten more continuations over the years in the forms of games, toys, and comics while Jem is remembered mostly through the old show and recently the IDW comic. Ghostbusters is also owned by Sony and as such is their cash cow. Hasbro has a LOT of franchises it can rely on whether it be on the big screen or small screen and they also have their toy division pulling in lots of dough as well. Hasbro isn't hurting as much even when a movie they make bombs (Battleship, Ouiji, Jem) because they will always have something else to cushion the blow. Sony has had a lot of tough times and after Disney got Spiderman back for the Marvel Universe, they'er scrambling to get some cash in so why not do it with a property they have that has always brought in some money; Ghostbusters. And as SHITTY as the Jem movie was, I will admit that the reactions from the director of that film was a lot more mature than what Feige (sp) has shown all out. The Jem director was ambitious if just misguided in how to do this but in the end he and Hasbro never blamed misogyny for the movie tanking since fans, mostly women, let it be KNOWN how pissed off they were at the film and the message was heard. Comparing that to Ghostbusters, it seems like ALL fans are ignored, including the female ones who aren't impressed by this. Any female fans who are disappointed seem to be swept under the rug and replaced by the cherry-picked legit sexist comments to cover the asses of everyone in charge. They simply don't want a big-budget, big name series to fail on their watch and given the heat of the current times they are grabbing at reasons for its failure except for their own doing. Fiege's temper tantrum over this was the final straw for me; the guy has shown himself to be very egotistical and unable to take criticism in any way all the while trying to play off some sob-story about how he's 'different' and 'understands women' better as if we should see him as the lord and savior of female driven movie. The characters in Ghosbusters shows that is not at all the point.

I also like how Dan Akroyd is trying to do MASSIVE damage control, saying it's more funny than the first two... crutching on the fact that people will think "Oh... damn, if HE says it's funny as hell, now I have to see it." I agree with what you said, particularly about the passing the torch vs the reboot route Sony ultimately took. The scene from the original GB where Venkman spoke to Ray about the "franchise options" in itself could have been the opening needed for the new GB generation. The damage is done though. Chances are that Sony may do a reboot of this reboot in the future, simply based on how badly THIS one does. if they do so they should stick with the "passing the torch" idea that was thrown out for this one. Hopefully this movie won't kill the brand. I knew this movie was in trouble when members of the original flicks shilled for it. I've never seen a reboot where they got the original cast to shill for the new one, never... until this one.

Why? Why remake a movie that was done right the first time? Ghostbusters now joins the list with Psycho, Halloween, Carrie, Total Recall, Robocop, Alfie, Annie, Dawn of the Dead, I Spit On Your Grave, Fright Night, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, The Omen.... And the list goes on..... Few remakes, reboots or "re-imaginings" are ever better than the original. Cape Fear with Deniro, (though the original with Mitchum was great) and John Carpenter's The Thing are some of the very few remakes that are as good or better than the original. Speaking of Carpenter. What gave Rob Zombie the gall to think he could do Halloween better than Carpenter? It's John Fucking Carpenter! The only time I can even begin to understand why a remake is needed is when adapting a foreign film for U.S. audiences. REC and Quarantine are recent examples tgat come to mind and both were good. While The Vanishing with Kiefer Sutherland was filmed better from a technical standpoint than the French Canadian version. But Hollywood had to screw it up by completely changing the ending. Their excuse: Americans can't handle unhappy endings. How insulting! Oh, and Old Boy. The Japanese version was perfect. Why adapt it and screw it up? I decided a long time ago to never pay money to see a film remake. If we all did the same, maybe Hollywood will get the hint.... maybe. (Probably not.)
