    I’ve known Harold’s daughter since I was 14. They were extremely close. And Harold had a good relationship with Reitman senior… so in this case, not only was I good with it, but it made me pretty emotional (I worked with Harold myself years later on Knocked Up).

    In general, I agree with the sentiment of your point at the end. However, I feel like this is a unique case. Jason Reitman and Violet Ramis Stiel grew up together as their respective fathers made the original Ghostbusters movies together. Bill Murray is Violet's godfather. I think they had a pretty good idea that they were honoring Harold in a way that he would approve of.

    There's also the additional element that for actors to write down those kind of rules, what would happen if they changed their minds later on? Or changed them and then changed them again? It would be like making sure your will was always up to date. Maybe that's how it could be incorporated, into an actors' will. But even that could be legally challenged.

    It also came down to what was the purpose of bringing back the character. Egon had a huge and vital role in Afterlife and performing most of those interactions without using a digital double was a smart move. The sparing use of the digital Harold Ramis face kept it tasteful.

    You make a good point. It’s all about personal preference and each individual’s view on the matter. It almost falls into the issues you see a lot with medical proxy, power of attorney, and conservatorships. Which makes Eric’s point of actors and creators need to have it expressly written somewhere before their passing how they would like their likeness and IP handled all good point as well.

    I feel the same way. Yes, a character is typically identified by one actors voice & likeness but there are many other people who contribute to physically bringing that original character to life on screen. As long as they dont give the character a voice that isn't their own, then yes, Thats why Afterlife did a good job, it was tasteful, not over the top, and was saved until the very end. No talking just a minute scene of him helping his granddaughter with the proton gun, while the other old members just looked his way and smiled. If you are a proper ghostbusters fan then you would have no issue with how Afterlife sent him off, now if they bring him back for Frozen Empire as a fully fledged CGI character that will be distasteful and it looks from the trailer as if he's back (Phoebe is playing chess with an invisible entity in central park in one scene), I hope for the sake of the film its just a nod to his character.

    I think it’s contingent on the relationship the actor had with his family. It Reitman’s case, we know how much the son and the father adored one another, and how much they both loved the franchise, how much respect they had for the fans and vice versa. In this case I’m alright with them using AI to bring him back. But I think we should reflect on this in a case by case basis.

    I would have never expected Ghostbusters: Afterlife to make me cheer or feel like a kid again, and I was ABSOLUTELY not expecting the tears I shed in the end after waiting so long for a proper sequel, and seeing the beautiful send off to Harold Ramis. Keeping him as a none speaking ghost was shear perfection, though it would have been great to see him play Egon one last time. I am TRULY hoping this movie lives up to Afterlife and the original 2 movies.

    Regarding the size of the containment unit in the original movie - I always envisioned the containment unit as much larger device in a room behind the wall, and what we saw was just the "lock" used to safely force a newly-captured ghost in without breaking containment. This is suggested when Peck ordered the grid turned off and several of the blocks around the red "containment box" blew out. Maybe we are seeing the other side of it or additional modifications the existing grid to provide more controlled methods of examination and egress?

    I think it's likely more often than not that older actors like Harold and Carrie will have their approved estate arrangements in order before they pass. It's over the top to worry about whether an actor's estate is not actually the estate they would approve of making decisions for them because we will never know where the truth is on that.

    Excellent point on reuse of talent likeness! Wasn't initially sure but you're right. And the more I think about the slippier the slope is. There's soamy legal allowances for companies to use our data, comparing personal data usage and CGI likeness is just close enough for lawyers to argue for use of public CGI likeness...

    I think you make a strong point. But i also think AI has reached a point where it is more immaculate and perhaps seasoned actors from the 80's weren't even imagining having to write something like that down. This is a good idea for actors coming from the Ot's of 2000.

    I find it interesting that the lore seemed to have changed a bit surrounding egon and ray. In the first movie ray clearly helped egon make all of their toys. It wasnt just egon as afterlife showed. It was ray and egon. Sure ray was more mechanical and knowledgeable about the lore but when him and egon got together they really made some great stuff. Though it can be argued that egon came up with the idea of the equipment and made the schematics which makes sense. But i still like to imagine that ray is just as handy with that stuff as Egon. But its fair to say with egon gone ray wouldnt have anyone to follow with making the things that needs to be made.

    STRONGLY DISAGREE with you Ross. I thought Afterlife, it's in the title, did a wonderfully teaseful use of Egon. The beginning of the movie felt so 1980s, with just seeing his feet, with a stand in. When he came back as a ghost, the touching moment with his granddaughter and own daughter....it was not done in a way to get money. It was a way to included an actor who dead about a movie he was passionate about, AND tied in the story of family, sacrifice and love. HE wanted to protect his family and HE was there to save and guide his granddaughter in a way that he could never do while he was alive. HE could only do it in the Afterlife. Mic drop.

    I think each use of a deceased actor should be a case by case basis. Mr. Ramis was an integral part of this franchise. In 2016 Ghostbusters, his bust was featured in the film and it was dedicated to him. Ghostbusters afterlife felt like a fitting way for all of us to have a bit of closure after his passing. A way to say goodbye. Around the world, in many cultures, humans find comfort in believing our loved ones that have passed away watch over us and lend a hand in our times of need. Ghostbusters Afterlife captured this emotion in a wholesome manner. That is why I believe this instance is acceptable. Moving forward it may be that a section of an actor's will should address the use of their likeness in a yet to be released / created film.

  • @mandipandi303
    @mandipandi3034 ай бұрын

    I totally agree with your stance on resurrecting dead actors with CGI. I believe the practice should be abolished. Even if someone established in their will that their likeness could be used in a specific project after their death, they wouldn't be alive to address the inevitable changes. What if they would be diametrically opposed to what the changes would make of the media, and want to be taken off the project? Recreating dead actors is totally unethical, and we should stop doing it. Makeup technology has gotten good enough that we can make actors nearly identical to the deceased actor now anyway

    I agree with parts of your point about postmortem cameos but you're way off when you mention the family not having the right. You're advocating for government to have more control over the likeness of your departed loved ones than their family. That's a huge "stfu" from me. The family should have the only say in it period.
