I saw grown men leaving the theaters bawling..and when i went in and at the end where egon showed up n grabbed the wand to help phoebe, 30 years of my love for the franchise showed up too! Seeing all 4 of my heroes together again after decades, ive never cried harder at a movie , it hits you in the feels HARD! the ending really felt like the ending of every great 80s movie, ET when hes saying his last goodbyes before returning home, Goonies when they save their home and hug their family watching the ship fade into the distance, it wrapped all those heartfelt endings into one and gave it to us with this great 80s franchise

I have said it 100s of times, but once again ;) When all 4 Ghostbusters are together, Peters "I knew, you would turn up." Rays "Im sorry, i didnt believe you" and Winsts "I should have called, i miss you my friend" to me, even the first time in cinema, that never felt like the characters saying this to Egon. To me it always was.... Bill, Dan and Ernie saying "Sorry Harold. We should have done this, while we had time." So beautyfull and keep him muted, perfect

Stories about adult friendships and sticking together even when we get older no matter what.

Something like 15 years ago I’m driving south down Lake Shore Drive, middle of the summer, hit the part just north of the harbor, Columbus drive or so, and come to a stop at a light. I look next to me at a classic little Mercedes convertible, red, that has the top down and sitting in the drivers seat is Ramis. I remember looking, then look back at the light, it’s one of those moments you see in a movie where it doesn’t quite register, then it does. I look back, he looks at me, I wave and give a thumbs up, he smiles, the light turns green and he drives away. One of those really just surreal moments of random life. I sat there, cars honking at me, thinking “did I just randomly land next to Harold Ramis at a stoplight” then went to work. I really dug this when it came out, if you get a chance, watch Adam Savage’s Tested videos from back when this came out. He’s UBER Ghostbusters fan and got access to the set, props and even got to drive Ecto 1.

This is the TRUE Ghostbusters 3 I have been waiting for my whole life. Jason Reitman did his father (who wrote and directed the first 2 ghostbuster’s movies) proud. I went into the theater thinking that this would be a fun B grade movie and like everyone else in that packed IMAX left with tears of sadness and joy at how amazing this movie was. McKenna Grace as Phoebe is the absolute breakout star of this movie, she really is the true heir to Egon Spengler. And that final scene of Egon with everyone at the end made me and everyone else in that theater burst into cheers and then tears.😭😭👏🏽👏🏽 Fun Fact: Veteran actor Bob Gunton actually played Spengler and had Harold Ramis’ face digitally placed on him.

The most emotional part though, was Bill Murray took it hard cause he was the last one to see Harold a few days before he died. Egon’s grand daughter is killer. I remember seeing her in a few films where she’s the youngest son’s crush at school or whatever, most notably in Fuller House. She’s Candice Cameron’s youngest son’s girlfriend. She just freaking jumps off screen with so much personality. She reminds me of Drew Berrymore, or Jodi Foster that way. I was so stoked to see her in this film and to see her looking so different than her long blonde haired prim and proper look she has sported a lot. Anyway, for me, she makes this film. She’s the closest thing to having Egon there. I’m super excited to see her career in the future. I hope she has a good transition into adulthood and ends up in the right rolls. I’m telling you, barring a drug addiction, or some scandal with a Kanye or something like that, she gonna win a lot of awards in her life. Totally over shadows the Stranger Things kid. The only one that gonna truly make it out of that show is Millie and she’s hanging on for dear life as it is. No one cared she was in the Godzilla films, wasted rolls for her. The Sherlock films she made for Netflix are really pretty fun. And she produces those herself apparently. Sorry for the side track. EGON’S GRANDDAUGHTER =AWESOME

I think they handled Egon's swan song perfectly. And the VFX benefited from the ghostly effect, and not having him speak. The former obscured the sense of an uncanny valley, and the latter kept the illusion from breaking, as human mouth movements are notoriously difficulty to recreate. I love Rogue One, but the more they linger on Tarkin, and the more he speaks, the less it feels like Peter Cushing, and the more it feels like a digital trick. They needed to dodge that outcome here in order to really make the emotional beats work, and they did a fantastic job.

It is excellent as it provides a treasure trove of what could be adapted for future movies. They could go anywhere with this franchise. The premise of the franchise is flexible. They can do anything with it. This franchise if handled right could go on forever. Anyway, hope you are looking forward to the latest film "Frozen Empire." It looks fantastic!

Egon's presence without dialogue was for a few reasons (some theories). A big reason from what I read is that nobody dared to replace Harold Ramis with any lines in the movie. Another is that his voice may not have seemed too fit (if that makes sense) his old character. The visual only did make it more emotional. A theory is that there's a learning period with interactions in the real world as a ghost. He was invisible at times moving things for phoebe and finally he's seen at the end. Who knows

Now Afterlife is how you do a faithful sequel to such an amazing franchise, which is why it was successful enough to warrant a follow-up film unlike that one film in the franchise that won't be named. I for one am definitely looking forward to Frozen Empire when it drops. What was even more impressive about this film is that it basically had a female lead with Spengler's granddaughter being supported by other well suited cast members and managing to have all the "feel good moments" without going "woke" and taking away from the original films. If they follow this formula for the next one I imagine Frozen Empire will do just as well if not better than Afterlife in the box office.

Jaby Answering your question, both Jason and his late father, Ivan Reitman made a decision not to have Egon speak. Because Egon's nonverbal shows more emotion. Jason had a veteran character actor named Robert (Bob) Gunton as body double for Ramis. Gunton has been in a lot of movies such as Patch Adams and Shawshank Redemption.

The director of the film is Jason Reitman, who is the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original film. He had actually remained friends with the daughter of Harold Ramis, the two had met on the set of the original ghostbusters. one of the stipulations for this film that he insisted on was that Harold's family be involved, esp with everything revolving around Egon. they had final say, and everything was passed to them for approval. So everything you see in the final film, Harold's family signed off on. to me, thats all i needed to hear. I love this film and i was a wreck during the ending. so much so i had to rewatch the end immediately after because i had missed stuff because i was crying so hard.

I watched this in 2021 and left in tears, remembering the times as a teen in the early 00's my dad and I ordered pizza and got it from Movie Madness here in Portland, Before KZread was a thing... and we loved both the first and second. I feel like this was a nice tribute to Egon/the original Actor Harold Ramis. I also get the idea that Dan Akroyd who is a fervent believer in the paranormal is my fave to know about such, and the "Afterlife" and it's properties and possibilities and how to commune with spirits... I have always identified as "Spooky" in many ways... I got that Existential dread from the film that the OG film never did by tackling death before, and how it must be to be existing with "Unfinished Business" and how grieving works... even in funny or humorous ways. I loved the film and I was moved to tears at the end, and even more so with McKenna grace's pop song "Ghosts" love the fun reaction CinePals!

Ivan Reitman directed GB 1 & 2. His son Jason "you know, my dad says you guys are full of crap" grew up on those movie sets & knows what goes into making a GB movie better than anyone else. He became a respected & acclaimed filmmaker himself, but didn't stray far from indie films like "Juno" & "Thank You for Smoking". When he was (often) asked if he thought about following in his father's footsteps & making a Ghostbusters movie, he always shrugged it off saying that it would be the most boring GB movie ever because it would be about quirky, angst-ridden people sitting at a table talking about GB, because he doesn't do big, epic, heavy-effects blockbusters like his dad. Fast-forward to 2019 when, after being inspired by a dream about a 12yo girl firing a proton pack & her 16yo brother driving Ecto-1 through a field, he shocked his dad saying he wants to make a follow-up GB movie. It turned out to be a timely decision because Ivan (as producer) was on the set every day with Jason directing & it was a special bonding moment. Less than a year after release, Ivan passed away. It makes the context of the movie even more poignant.
