The difference isn't just that he's a fan. It's that this whole metal empire started as an anthropology project, so he also has an innate curiosity to see what makes people tick, as well as ask "why?" When two passions can feed into each other so well, it makes for some excellent content.

Seriously, I can't remember a better interview with Tobias! This was definitely the elite of all interviews and I could have watched/listened for much longer. He talks about the success of Rock 'n' Roll bands being once dictated by teenagers to 20+ year olds which I think is coming back around. The amount of young children/pre-teens I see with their parents at Ghost rituals is nothing short of amazing. These younger boys and girls are coming in with their faces painted wearing the band's shirts and costumes and are truly enjoying the show. They're with their parents, or just their moms or dads, doing meet and greets which is pretty awesome. While some may argue that Ghost puts on an adult only show, what these kids are seeing or hearing in school or on t.v. is far worse than anything they'll ever see or hear while enjoying a ritual. Ghost is for EVERYONE, young and old, and I am eager to see what the future looks like with Ghost playing at places like Madison Square Gardens.

Think of listening to an album or going to a concert of Ghost like experiencing a Broadway musical. Theatrics, characters with a backstory. Too many people take it way too seriously or literally. Pick apart the lyrics and find the underlying meanings. Most of it is a commentary on humanity and the current culture. One of my favorite songs, Jigilo Har Meddigo, is basically about fuck boys.

I don't take the Satan thing seriously, it's about theater and trying to be interesting and a little dangerous for the audience. Everyday is like Halloween for Ghost. I liked the parallel to Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper, same exact thing. Although some fans are always going to want to make more out of it and do crazy shit unfortunately. Hope not though.

Really great point about bands not only being good players with good songs but being brave with it is often what makes albums stand out. Don't forget about maiden they spent from 1975 to 1980 driving up and down the country and sleeping in a freezing cold green van playing tiny clubs. You can't say they don't work for their success. They seem to have a genuine fondness for their fans which just makes them more popular. I think Tobias seems to have that understanding that they are actually his greatest marketing tool. Since I saw them I've told anyone who's vaguely interested how great their show is and they should see them. Having gone to a Catholic school the whole quasi - religious feel to it with the church insense burning and backwards monastic chanting at the beginning. Instead of blood drenched leather festooned growlers in death palour, they are so pristinely turned out. kinda weird but cool and refreshing. Great cover versions too.

It almost feels like interviewers are avoiding it. Like it's on par with telling Greta Van Fleet that they sound like Zeppelin. The difference is that GVF are using the first two Zeppelin albums with little to nothing else as their foundation. Ghost's sound is constantly evolving picking up new elements with each album. However, Ghost retains that mystique aesthetically and lyrically that's so much in common with BOC. Ghost's first two albums were much closer to the BOC archetype though. So, I don't think bringing that comparison up now would have anywhere near as much of a negative connotation than it would've in 2013. Plus, Tobias was totally cool with the Sabbath comparison.

The sad thing is, throughout the times, there have been those bands where everyone believed they would be the next Maiden, Metallica etc. But then we fast forward 10 years, and although those bands are successful, they did not at ALL live up to their potential in terms of widespread popularity. In the end 80s, everyone was talking about Helloween, but they suffered in the 90s, and never really took off. Same story with Iced Earth. In the 2000s, bands like Hammerfall & Edguy were super hyped, and especially Edguy had all the potential. But when it came to getting their big break, they did not get the support they deserved. In the end, it was a lack of support from big record companies -support which they would've gotten, had they emerged 10-15 years earlier. If we are to see another Maiden again, this is something that has to change. These bands cannot be carried by fans alone. They need power behind them, and they need big exposure. Now we have Beast In Black as the next hot thing in metal, and I just hope we will finally see a true metal band rise...

Michael Holmgaard Helloween puts on a hell of a show, I’ve seen them several times in the last 8 years. In the 80’s they suffered from a shitty record company and management then some ill advised forays into pop metal. In the 90’s they went back to their power metal roots and put out some excellent albums. They had a big reunion tour in 2017/18 and even headlined at Wacken in August.

I definitely agree you need a movement beyond one band to make it work, but Ghost is so niche by comparison that they won't be as big. You hear the metal fans that consider them poppy posers and whatever. I also don't see anyone else taking up Maiden or Sabbath's torch in metal, but I could see bands that stay as well as the Big 4. That is powerful in its own right.

@@wtglb Don't get ne wrong. I absolutely love Helloween, and their albums from the second part of the 90s definitely got them back on track. And yes, they do play big shows -Especially in the reunion era. However, when looking at their starting point, Helloween should've been WAY bigger. They had Maiden potential, but today they are nowhere near recognized as much as they deserve. Noise Records definitely screwed them over, but still, they should've had more power behind them, as they were one of the few bands who could've picked up the torch, and be metal's saviors whenever Maiden & Priest are gone...

@dooder Agreed. While Death was definitely unique, they should've had the same appeal as other big bands from that era. Pantera comes to mind as a band which Death should've been on par with, in terms of popularity.

I am slowly and surely beginning to actually appreciate Ghost. I'm not sure I'll ever consider them metal, but I'm not just a metalhead, I'm a rocker. And they are a weird form of rock, bit what's wrong with weird? Listening to Tobias gives me respect for their art. Who knows, maybe one day they'll be a favourite. At one point I didn't care for them at all, now I like them. An acquired taste sure, but....well, keep it up Ghost. You are constantly winning me over more and more. Nyaemal Hrruna I totally agree. I hate the pigeonholing I see. For me it’s simple. If you have an energy and sound I like(and that tends to be on the heavier side of music), I’ll listen. FFDP is scorned, and I love them. Linkin Park is derided as not being metal, but some of their early stuff has an edge that I love. I hate rap and r&b with a passion, and I question why people like it, but I respect that it’s just their jam. You do you, I’ll do me. Just enjoy your d**n music!
