Ghost In This House - Alison Krauss

Музыка

Written by Hugh Prestwood and popularized by Shenandoah, this version appears on Alison Krauss' 1999 album "Forget About It."

Lyrics:
I don't pick up the mail
I don't pick up the phone
I don't answer the door
I'd just as soon be alone
I don't keep this place up
I just keep the lights down
I don't live in these rooms
I just rattle around
I'm just a ghost in this house
I'm just a shadow upon these walls
As quietly as a mouse I haunt these halls
I'm just a whisper of smoke
I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire
That once burned out of control
It took my body and soul
I'm just a ghost in this house
I don't mind if it rains
I don't care if it's clear
I don't mind stayin in
There's another ghost here
She sits down in your chair
And she shines with your light
And she lays down her head
On your pillow at night
I'm just a ghost in this house
I'm just a shell of the man I was
A living proof of the damage heartbreak does
I'm just a whisper of smoke
I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire
That once burned out of control
It took my body and soul
I'm just a ghost in this house
I'm just a ghost in this house
I'm just a shadow upon these walls
As quietly as a mouse I haunt these halls
I'm just a whisper of smoke
I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire
That once burned out of control
It took my body and soul
I'm just a ghost in this house
Oh-oh, I'm just a ghost in this house.

This singer is perfection. The song is very personal to me, having lost a wonderful wife, at 48. Cancer. I was fortunate to see Alison and Union Station live last year, what a night! Thanks for putting this beautiful compilation of images together.

+Cynthia Campbell You know that gap in your life now. My loss was many more years ago, but she was my lifeblood.my soulmate. Time passes, the loss does not, for me. Fortunately I am a buoyant person, but today I had a Christmas letter from the Hospice, asking for more funds............heart-breaking. Best wishes to you.

My dad played this song by Shenendoah over and over after my mom left us to start another life. I was 11 years old... but I still remember the loss the feeling and emptiness. How he ached for my mom to come home. Now, that he's passed without ever reconciling, and never remarried... I have my own tears to cry to this song. It grasps the truth of pain when losing someone by choice or death... Grateful for good music and beautiful voices.

My daughter 37, lost her husband, and i found this song so personal to both of us. She lives with me, and each verse is so close to home. We both share the lost of our husbands, we both live in the same house, parts of the song belong to me and parts belong to her. The song is unbelievable and the fact that my husband left it in his car for us to share in this absolutely wonderful, it makes it a gift from someone. Thank you Jesus.

Carolyn Jackson I’ve learned that just because we share a commonality, one will never be able to compare or feel an ounce of the hurt and sadness that resides within us. That being said, I too lost my everything almost exactly a year ago, he was 35 it was unexpected and tragic.. it becomes easier to say to those around me that I’m okay, but I’m merely pacifying those that just don’t get it. Heal? Healing would suggest I have a wound. I don’t have a wound, I am missing my soul, my heart, my world - it left me when he did. I can’t put a bandage on that and it will forever remain, I’m just learning to live without, not suicidal but I’m also no going to rush out of the way of an incoming missle and I’ll not be a hero stepping in front of a child about to get hit, I will only be greedily jumping my place in line. I’m just a whisper of smoke.. I’m all that’s left of two hearts on fire.. I can keep breathing, keep going because of one fact- one day I will see him again. Each day I awake, wondering, will it be today? Some days I feel like a prepubescent youth waiting for love to find me, dreaming of what might be..feeling as if it’s so far away. Best of luck Carolyn :(, you are not alone

40 years ago, (this weekend in fact) I met the man of my dreams. We married in May of '84. We had 2 beautiful children, 12 years apart (medical issues on my behalf). Though we went through struggles, We NEVER gave up on each other, our marriage and our family. He passed away suddenly on July 4th, 2021. My 💔 heart was shattered and continues to be, because I went from being an 18 year old kid living at home with my parents, to being married. There was always taking care of me. I am a mere ghost in my home now. Time melts together. Most days, I have no idea what day it actually is. I was today years old when I found this beautiful song.

Alison makes this song timeless. With God at our side, all things are possible. We lost our father last July. I held him as he took his last breaths. My mother is still struggling, especially through these past holidays. For all who are hurting, may the good Lord ease your pain and give you comfort. You are not alone.

The patience and precise control Alison has over her voice is awesome! Not a note rushed, deceptively gentle, no extra little frilly trills to disguise weak phrasing or breath control.

It's hard to find a song Alison has redone that this is not the case. Keith Whitley holds a special place and always will, so he may be the exception. But for that reason alone.

While I agree that Alison's version runs circles around the original version by Shenandoah, I absolutely loved their version and still do. Some artists just "own" a song when they perform it, and their performance is no less for another artist being able to take the song and push it to the next level. Hugh Prestwood wrote this and he is a wonderful songwriter. You would probably also like another song he wrote that is one of my all time favorites -- "Asking Us To Dance" performed by Kathy Mattea. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dn58mLioqpevgbQ.html Check it out. I think you'll probably love it :D

Every song she sings is perfect. She plays a mean fiddle too. On top of all that, she attracts amazing talents to make music with her. She is an angel sent to this earth to show us mere mortals what the angels sound like when they decide it's time to sing a few songs.

This song is absolute perfection and absolute heartbreak. The lyrics are SO well written, (thank you, Hugh Prestwood) and the melody is perfect. The version by the band Shenandoah was wonderful but cannot compare to the hauntingly beautiful rendition by the angelic Alison Kraus. Kudos to the band and the background singers as well. The harmonies were perfect. Alison has the voice of an angel.
