I love this man's professional humanity like crazy. Precise, straight to the point and always focused on the topic or person you are talking about. The description of Soap's death really gave voice to Ghost's silence and honored Sam and Neil's artistic caliber. This cast is a gem and it's a huge shame that they had to sacrifice such a worthwhile character in order to make Makarov a 'real' villain. Thank you Dan for the subtlety and wit of these wonderful interviews, and thank you Sam for bringing Ghost to life, precisely. ❤️

There's a fine line between personal and professional opinion for actors that I do not envy them for. When a product they've put their best effort in fails spectacularly because of the story writers, but they're still contractually obligated to speak positively about it, it must be difficult to answer certain questions and not give away what they're actually thinking about it. I was happy to see that you didn't put pressure on the topic, like some other interviewers tend to do, but accepted the answers Sam gave you respectfully. I definitely believe Sam when he says that he and the other actors felt this way about Soap's ending, and that Neil was every bit as professional as he describes about it, but I can't believe that any of them were truly happy about the outcome/how the scene turned out. I also believe the strike had a lot to do about it. Coupled with Activision's glut for money and results, the poor writers were probably in an incredibly stressed situation when typing down this story. But a big part of it is also just Activision. When they got their hands on Blizzard and the storytelling for World of Warcraft it went quickly downhill there too. And I'm not surprised about the quality of MW3's story writing, there were plenty of signs going out before the game released. Enough so that I held off from buying it and waited to see the initial reactions. I'm glad I did, so at least my money didn't go into rewarding this kind of behaviour from a gaming company that should know better. I wasn't surprised. Just immensely disappointed. MW and MW2 were good. Not perfect, but good, and- despite that I should know better- I was hopeful for a decent remake that sought to change the story up a little while still paying homage to the original one. And while I never like it when a popular character dies, at least OG Soap got a highly decent send-off. This was just.. They might as well have just clipped in Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove with her classic line, "well, he ain't gettin' any deader!" and cut the game there. Soap's death, and how it happened, is just one among many flaws with MW3 though. Albeit the biggest one of them, in my opinion. It just feels so insulting after the good vibes we got from MW2. To all of us, players and actors. To Neil and his version of Soap (who had quickly become a favourite). To the close friendship that Ghost and Soap formed during MW2. To the whole feeling of quality that we had come to expect after MW2. None of this is the actors fault though. At least someone in Activision did something right when they picked out the new 141. Samuel has done a wonderful job with his version of Ghost and brought much needed personality and involvement to the character. And a face! You wouldn't think a pair of eyes behind a mask could be so full of expression, but here we are. Well done indeed! And here's hoping the story can be redeemed. Who knows, if Graves wasn't in that tank and Alex wasn't in that factory, then maybe Soap's brain wasn't in his skull at that crucial moment? I sincerely hope you also manage to get Neil (and Barry) to do an interview, because it would be awesome to see what he has to say. Thank you for giving us this content, Dan!

Couldn't have said it better. Soaps death has put me off MW4 entirely. I'm unsure about BO Gulf War but will decide that one when I see it. I was so excited for the campaigns, I was wanting to go back and finally play the others, but after seeing the ending of this one? Not touching them, not for a long time anyway. Soap has been my favorite since the OG games and I was hoping to see him grow into the captain we all loved.

So excited you had a chance to talk with Samuel about Soap. In my opinion, Ghost's voice breaks when he says RIP and it speaks to the genuine chemistry amongst the actors. From a writing/creation perspective finding out about the scene as late in the day as they did brings the emotion to it in a very real way.

I used to listen to trance music from 00s era and when he mentioned those familiar name like Paul Oakenfold I started screeching like in a nostalgic way. He's correct tho, I thought that trance culture has dead long time ago. But till this year I met my coworker, a gen z he was so fascinated when he found out I used to listen to the genre as well. So I think it's still a big community if you just find in the correct place and time.

I maybe an asshole…but hearing Sam’s story and seeing his reaction makes what happened to MW3 that much gut punching 🥊. He did his job phenomenally well and he is definitely a great actor and person. I’m not going to lambast or criticize the cast of actors or the choreography/digital staff. It’s none of their fault. I still hold fault with Activision mainly but also I have to say that the facts presented itself -> Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games…dropped the ball as well. The Writer’s Strike definitely affected this game’s development. I see that. I understand. At the same time - there were other options. The Strike had valid points and goals that were/are being met or at least trying to get most of them out there. I still believe that this whole situation was avoidable had the people who were in charge of making decisions…saw that THEY HAD OPTIONS. They did. There was no question about it. I’m a COD fan but this game really made me step back from what I’ve been holding onto barely for the last ten years - my enthusiasm for the COD franchise & community.

I see a lot of people complain about the speed of soaps death but in a way thats what would happen in a life situation, you wont always get the goodbye and to then be ripped straight bacm to defusing the bomb, brings in that realism of warfare, seeing a friend die and having to quickly carry on with your op. Roach and ghost got gunned down very quickly without a proper goodbye and i didnt see many people complain about that. Though i would say that the whole storytelling of the game could have been vastly improved upon, but soaps death was done in a very realistic and gut wrenching way. I felt heartbroken and then being pulled straight back into a fight and then defusing the bomb while still trying to get my head round the sudden turn of events was done amazingly. For soldiers its work first grieve later

My thoughts as well. Why make a reboot if you're just going to pretty much follow the same path? I know it still would be but killing Gaz or even Farah would have been a better choice. Gaz cuz it would have really gotten under Prices skin, man would have chased Makarov then and there, Farah seems to be somewhat of a daughter to him in my opinion, so that would have set him off entirely as well. Plus the implications between Farah's death and what Makarov was trying to do would have made some actual plot development, would have even affected Alex. But no, let's kill off Soap... again.

I'm sorry, I know the actors are proud of their job, and that's great; but Soap's death is one of the lamest moments in the entire COD franchise. The whole campaign is a narrative mess and it just feels empty, we barely got to know him and the moment itself is just so simple, there's isn't even music. Remember in the og MW3 how his death had all this beautifully composed orchestra? And how it built up for several minutes and even left Price an incredibly important info that pushes the plot forward? Now that's was a good death scene, this doesn't compare, is lame as hell
