I was curious how the Panasonic Lumix GH5S would perform as a main vlogging camera, in comparison to my existing setup using the Panasonic Lumix GH5; particularly with the low-light performance at night.
I was originally planning to just take this camera out for myself and make a vlog about vlogging, just so I could see how well it would do in a realworld scenario. As I was watching it back, I thought other people might find this interesting and may also be contemplating the GH5S as a vlogging setup. So I decided I would publish it!
In conclusion to my tests, I've noticed the picture to be much better in mid to low light scenes, compared with my GH5, however in very dark scenes, it still degrades the images at a faster rate than I imagined. The lack of an IBIS sensor is also very noticeable when walking around at a comfortable pace, however when stable and making considered shots, the shakiness seemed less-prominent. The 42.5mm ƒ/1.2 nocticron lens performed extremely well with very sharp results.
Having considered the feedback on my previous video and looked over the footage from this test setup, the way I am using these cameras going forward is on the principle of utilising their best features independently, rather than looking to replace my GH5 with the GH5S entirely. During the Japan rail trip, we've been filming the past few weeks, we've done exactly that and hopefully have been able to create something really special that I can't wait to edit and share with you guys!

    hey man, great 'real world' test comparing the two cameras. This is just what is needed when looking at the performance differences (anyone can just read the specs!) So it's great seeing the side by sides etc. I'm a GH5 user myself and love the IBIS but that low light on the S is so good! If I had the money I'd have both and use them interchangeably depending on the scene like you said :) keep up the great work!

    Great video thank you, as a GH5 user and using it mainly for video, I was surprised how much better the GH5s image was, especially at the vending machine, obviously it had more noise but the sharpness of the image from the 10mp sensor was very clear to see, think I might have a look at the GH5s for my second camera and not the G9.

For example, partner the 12mm F1.4 (or 15mm f1.7), while the GH5S equipped with f2.8 glass. I noticed you used the 12-60 Leica with the Gh5S- are you satisfied with the lens [power] OIS for GH5S? -Best.

    Hey Dude! great video, intrigued on what colour profile you use... I love the idea of V-Log but it really doesnt perform well over 1600 ISO on the GH5s... The variable frame rate in this profile also looks terrible which has been a shame! Ive just started using the cine D but I am still having to experiment with which profile is the most stable!

    hey I know this is YEARS later but I'm heading to Japan in a week and I was contemplating buying the V-LOG L because I hear its bad in 8bit and low light situations. Alternative is Cine-D or what i've been using for years which is Natural. Did you come to an outcome as to how Cine-D is in lowlight? I've read on threads that people have gotten good results in low light but no specifics as far as ISO. Any help appreciated.

    Hello Joe, it is difficult to compare images when they are displayed separately. The best comparison happens when the two images are displayed at the same time on a screen divided into two parts and the image of each camera occupies one half.

  • @Holtenstein

    When you try the GH5S with Speed booster and fast full-frame glass it is on par with the A7iii and with 10 bit ProRes, it looks cleaner. I've tested them side by side and I would encourage you to try it. The native 5000iso in Vlog plus with the SB XL you get a 1.18x crop too. Its a beast in low light and the Gh5/GH5s combo are my go-to cameras for weddings and events. BTW the AF looks surprisingly good now. GH5 for its IBIS and Anamorphic options are just great tools for filmmakers.

    Really worthwhile video, thanks Joe. I can see the visual improvement in the S, but without the stabilisation it feels like such a step backwards. I don't think the benefit of one is worth the exclusion of the other. If you didn't use a Fuji for stills then i would think having both with you would be the winner - GH5 for most things until it can't cope then switch. Carrying around 3 cameras though is a lot!

  • @joeallam

    @joeallam

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I agree - they both have significant strengths. Having three big cameras is too much for me personally. In fact, I still carry my X100F, so it would be 4! Luckily I travel with Elly, so she'll have one of the GH's along with her Fujifilm to lighten the load and get extra shots too.

    @guyrab

    Joe Allam yes the firmware has made it better but the gh5s has inherently better af as it’s s newer processor faster and it has half the pixels to contend with also it has a bodycam af mode when it cannot recognise a face .... i have both of them and I love them both

    I was really hoping to see the gh5 in the arcade or any of the moments after 12:20 I feel like it really it depends on what you want in focus but 1250 and lower is solid for GH5. Also, what profile was used? I hear V-LOG L is not ideal for low light vs Cine-D. Which to me makes no sense since its meant to have the most dynamic range and just most ideal picture profile BUT i've never purchased V-LOG L.

    Hi, good video. In my opinion, panasonic might have made a mistake leaving out IBIS. I get it; cine cameras have no ibis since they are always rigged out anyways. But let's be real, this camera is distinctly different and far more convenient than cine cameras. Hence the removal of IBIS really hurts. Especially for a vlogger... The lens IS is not good enough, as we can see. I say this as an owner of the GX85, looking add either a GH5 or GH5s to my arsenal, and the no-IBIS is a huge deterrent for me from the S.

    I could finally see the grain and image fall apart by the high range. 6400 looked properly exposed to me, but I suppose it’s not as bright as the eye would see it. To be honest, I could stay around max 3200 with an f2 if the AF would support that. At least to my phone watching eyes. I suppose on a monitor the holes would be more clear.

    I must admit, I haven't clicked a single image with it. Even with my GH5 over the last year, I've only once actively used it for photos, as I primarily only see it as my video option. I guess it's because if I have my GH5 with me, it's always when I'm making a video about photography, so I'll also have my Fujifilm. There are many times when it's the opposite though, when I'm only out taking photos and not making videos.

    ISO 4000-5000 is the closest approximation to what human eyes see and therefore the optimum choice - anything above looks too artificial/grainy/etc. My one dictum is that photographs and footage must never look as if taken/recorded by anything other than a mechanized (human) eye.

    Yeah it's pretty nuts how technology keeps advancing. The GH5S is by no means the first camera to go this high, but I do often remember back to my EOS 350D being quite gnarly above ISO 800 about 13 years ago!

    One of my biggest dissapointments with the GH5 is the terrible low light. GH5s looks much better.

    This was so GH5S fanboy that it was hard to watch. Could have been a cool video but every shot you put any effort was with the S. In split screen you even put the S on the brighter more interesting half. This could have been better and I hope your next comparison is better.

    Why in hell are people still using 25fps? Looks terribly jittery on a 60Hz monitor. Why not 30fps (or with GH5(s) 60fps)?

  • @joeallam

    25fps is standard for PAL devices (Europe, most of Asia and Australia) which is 50hz rather than NTSC (North America). 24/25fps is also the optimal framerate for the human eye to not distinguish individual frames comfortably, commonly called the "cinematic look". Higher frame rates can equally give a choppy look.

    @@joeallam Nobody uses PAL-rates on playback anymore. Everybody* in the world has a 60Hz Screen. KZread is watched 99% on PCs or Tablets/Smartphones, not TVs. I don't know, what you mean by "optimal". To me even 30fps does not really look fluid. When you film in 60fps everything seems more lifelike and real. It's stunningly beautiful. Check "Jacob + Katie Schwarz" to see, what I mean. (Reduce their videos to 25fps and most of the magic is gone.) Yes, 24/25fps looks "cinematic", but 30fps/60fps looks better. You're not doing films here on KZread, where you need to create a virtual distance by using 24/25fps. Because that's all, what this look is about. They noticed that with The Hobbit movie, where in 48Hz it was hard to make the characters not look like actors in costumes. 24/25fps helps in creating an unrealistic look, which is not so easy to be mistaken for the real-world. But is this really, what you're going for? Oh ... nice video btw.
