I remember in class, someone brought up Monty in a Presentation. Our teacher recognized him. She would tell me stories about when he was in her class, he would show her his work in between assignments. He would talk about how he taught himself how to animate and his concepts, and was learning Photoshop (from class) he was literally working ON THIS SERIES during those classes from my professor's description. She even recognized his signature. He was ambitious and hardworking. Always thinking, creating, lively. I've felt a close connection to him ever since. Monty is my inspiration. To think he was here, in this nowhere place, in a community college, dreaming and creating greatness that would impact us for decades well after he was gone. -

These really showed just how ambitious Monty Oum was. He taught himself how to animate and always wanted his projects to show what he felt was perfection and then do better than that the next time. He really was ahead of his time having an understanding of what made an impact frame really shine. Because at the time these were released, neither anime nor video games were even quite at this level. Fighting games were the closest though which is why you see characters from the Dead or Alive series in this.

I feel like people don't really understand just how next level just these two parts are. In the span of roughly 15mins, Monty changed arena's six times (including falling down the side of a effing wall), introduced nine iconic characters, each with a completely unique skillset and fighting style, had some of the most amazing and dynamic camera shots and angles following what could easily be the most diverse, intense, and mind-blowing fight choreography ever seen (I mean... that tracking shot inside the tornado... WOW!) And it was done in his spare time almost a decade ago. Not to mention the fact he actually managed to tell a story without any dialogue or exposition. Being a fan of the characters adds a layer of depth, but even without know who these characters are, you immediately understand how their abilities work and its easy to keep up when you see Rikku throw Kasumi into Yuna and she teleports them both back onto the bridge. It's easy to accept Ayane unleashing a blow powerful enough to destroy the whole temple since they just spent 90seconds trying to stop her from charging up. Ive been watching anime and gaming for over 35yrs and this remains the platinum standard in choreography, cinematography, pacing, intensity, and creativity. I HATE that he's gone because I know if he were still here, he'd be blowing our minds with current gen technology combined with his creative genius.

Name for me one modern show, movie, or game that can display this kind of skill and sheer presentation in such a short time? Only bombastic series, made by Platinum Games (i.e. Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and Revengence) come even close to this, and I think they even fall short on some accounts. Monty had a uniqueness to everything he did; I don't think anyone will ever quite achieve this level. There are some good imitators, especially in the RWBY scene, but none quite compare.

@@inkblooded1058yes! sadly rwby without monty has heavily disappointed me but it’s understandable as i concur w/ what you said, monty was just able to craft such exquisite fighting choreography that once you watch his work, everything else seems underwhelming in comparison. i was very sad to find out he had passed and still am as i was so curious what he had in mind w/ this series and anything else in general (kind of wish he finished this and not rwby but oh well). i only recently saw some previews on tifa waking up naked to be experimented on by doatec, cloud and yuna going to save her and him facing helena, ayane vs rikku fight preview w/ her huge mecha(?) sorry unfamiliar w/ FF in an ocean, also apparently a fan of his said he asked monty who won that fight (never fully shown) and he said rikku did and lastly rinoa having chained up rachel and then fighting against doatec jets😭

Monty Oum loved his fight scenes. xD You can also see some inspirations that were took from this in RWBY. Tifa's Haste spell was retooled for Weiss' time dilation glyph, and one of the later parts of Dead Fantasy has a character with a very familiar fighting style (I won't spoil it)...

so the girl with the wings - Rinoa - had her fighting style changed for Dead Fantasy. she doesn't normally wield a gun sword. what she does normally is shoot her dog at opponents on her wrist mounted missile launcher i am like 80% convinced this is why Zwei is like that in RWBY

I was really sad that Monty dropped production of it after he got hired by Roosterteeth, but the trade off was phenomenal. I was into Monty's stuff long before he got into RWBY or even Red vs. Blue. When you're done with this short series, he also made another video called Haloid. You will not be disappointed.

I admit I am one of those people who was hoping you would watch these, you did not disappoint! Also I noticed Monty seemed to love fights along cliff sides. After I saw the pattern in his work I started calling it the Monty Shot. Like in this when every character is fighting while falling down that cliff, I call that the Full Monty Shot. In volume 1 of RWBY when Ruby runs up the cliff with that bird, I call that the Reverse Monty Shot.

Oookay... See if I can break this down for you; First girl you see: Yuna (Final Fantasy 10) 2 girls that show up to fight: Kasumi and Ayane (half-sisters from the Dead or Alive series) 2nd FF girl that helps Yuna: Rikku. (FF10 again) 3rd DOA girl: Hitomi Then you knew Tifa from FF7. Girl with axe: Rachel, from Ninja Garden (partner series with DOA) 4th FF girl with the wings: Ronoa, from FF8. Then Kairi from Kingdom Hearts drops down next to her (partner series with FF) Now you have 3-5 left, then Monty moved on to RWBY after that.

The thing that impresses me the most about Kairi's entrance is, since she's from Kingdom Hearts, my immediate thought was "cupcake character", and understanding this; realizing people would assume she was soft or weak, Monty has her lead the charge with an amazing dual-wielding spin attack! And I'm not even going to talk about her 1v1 against Momiji. EPIC!

Yikes. Yeah, Monty was a genius and a legend in fight choreography. Especially in his hand-to-hand choreography. Did you notice that he used the same time distortion ability at 6:43 and 9:52 that Weiss used in volume 2 against Roman's mech and on the train? She had the clock face appear under her just like Weiss did under Blake, when she sped up to stop the launched missiles, and under herself when she was against the chainsaw faunus on the train. It's too bad that RT didn't have her use that ability again later on in the series. I can think of a few places where that would have come in handy. The white graphics of the bullets that converged here were the same as those shots that Mercury had converge on Yang during their fight in volume 3. At 13:02 you see the same type of weapon that one of the girls used against team SSSN (Sun's team) in their battle in volume 3. I can't remember the team's name. Have you decided on what series you're going to react to next?

Dead Fantasy has always been one of my favorite little gems on the internet, Monty did such an amazing job. I wish he'd been able to finish it, especially to get a follow-up with Rachel and Rinoa, that would've been sick. But still, what we have is amazing. sWooZie was involved in a remake of the first one, with updated character models and some more natural animations that's also pretty well done. I think there were plans to continue, but there's been no update for some time.

I'm legit so sad that this series will never have a proper end, cause this was specifically Monty's baby; so no one can/should take the reigns of it to try to think of how Monty wanted it to go. I legit came into it purely for the (Final) Fantasy side of things, since I've never played a Dead or Alive game. - Love Yuna (X,X-2), Rikku (X, X-2), and Tifa with my personal fav outfit for her, her Advent Children one. - Love the way Monty ran with Advent Children materia displaying on presumably where it'd have been slotted on the body. - The one with wings is Rinoa Heartily from FF8 another character that falls into my liked category. Love her wielding both her own glaive and Squall (FF8's MC)'s gunblade

Monty - the Legend While he still used assets already out there, he combined them into this masterpiece. The choreography, the fight move knowledge, the magic knowledge, the lore, for both "Final Fantasy" franchise AND "Dead or Alive"... he put them ALL in. There is a reason why he was considered a master class animator when it came to the fights. The fact that he was going the majority of this all on his own too... chef's kiss. Would have loved his version of RWBY, but gone too soon. If you look closely, you'll notice that he reused some moves that he did in Dead Fantasy in RWBY. (He might have reused the majority of them, if he had the chance) Good luck in Parts 3 & 4... or maybe just 3. lol ;-)
