After the initial setup, is it necessary to always have the phone on the same wifi as the speaker in order to use Alexa on the speaker? Can the speaker be used independently for anything, just by being connected to wifi?

Yes. The way you use Amazon echo devices, you can use this one too.

Just like the echo devices, the first time setup for Alexa services, your phone has to be on the same WiFi network as that of the speaker. Afterwards if the phone is not on wifi network, the speaker can work independently. But it will not work for different WiFi networks. Hope, i answered your question.

Gadgets India which shipping method did you choose, seller or AliExpress standard?

The shipment method was AliExpress standard shipping which is through the government postal service. In general any product worth less than 3500/- and is of small size don't attract any custom duty.
