Bluetooth and USB C kit for iPod classic (Classic Connect by Moonlit Market review)

I transform the busted 6th generation iPod Classic into a modern marvel with Bluetooth and USB-C capabilities. 🎶🔌
🔧 What's Inside:
The Upgrade Kit: I used the "Classic Connect" kit from Moonlit Market, a no-solder solution to upgrade the iPod (bought it myself, this is not a sponsored video)
🌟 Features & Benefits:
Bluetooth 5.2 & aptX, USB-C Port, new 3D printed backplate changes the look and feel of the iPod.
📌 Important Notes:
Check the official guide instructions for those considering this upgrade.
I give you my 5 cents, so that you can make your own decision whether you want it :)
Timeline:

00:00:57 Introduction
00:01:52 Classic Connect from Moonlit Market - what's in the box
00:05:00 Opening two ipods and switching frontplates
00:05:36 Moonlit Market upgrade
00:05:50 Irreversible step - removal of the top pin of the frontplate
00:06:31 Battery - folding the ribbon cable
00:07:37 SD Card adapter
00:07:54 Make sure everything works - audio jack, cables, bluetooth

Correction:
00:15:17 UPDATE on the fitting the front plate: about not having a perfect fit - moonlit market replied to me on my thread on Reddit and explained that if I take the case apart and remove the metal sponge at the base of the 30 pin adapter, it should fit much better.

So good to see such a kit now exists! I remember when the only solution was stuffing a cheap jack to Bluetooth adapter in the casing and soldering it to the battery risking destroying the iPod in the process. So nice to see the community isn't dead and is still thriving

They make Bluetooth transmitter that plugs into the headphone jack now, they are cheap and they work. There is also a 13pin Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the bottom port too. There are other options than this mod. And it doesn’t modify your iPod.

Bluetooth modding iPods has been around for many many years. It's just never been available in a convenient almost plug and play package. You would have had to butcher a little bluetooth transmitter modules and have them tap into the audio signal.

@@wassup5793 The glue is a bit jank but definitely still the cleanest all in one upgrade out right now. It has more features than mentioned, if you can do the solder work. It has solder pads for installing a wireless charging controller and a haptic feedback module as well. All of this is built on the board so you may be able to modify an OG back or design and print a new one.

All to accomplish something that has already been accomplished by modders for a quarter of the price, with off the shelf components, keeping the appearance of the device mostly or completely unaltered. Using the B7000 glue is their preference and I could never get onboard with it. I’ve repaired a bunch of iPads, iPhones, and a handful of Samsung/droids and I’ve watched other repair techs use glue. My experience with the B7000 has the glue stringing up and getting all over the place, plus you have drytime which totally blows. If you get some solid 2MM Tesa or 3M high temp tape it’s instant gratification. To help the tape get a good grip I add some hot air on the areas where the new tape is under and then I use some Quan Li brand clamps that are made to put solid pressure on both side until it cools. Just my opinion, who knows maybe I’m too stubborn about it and I’m the one missing out not using glue. Just watching this guy slather it on all of those edges and getting liquid glue where it don’t belong hits my OCD too much 😧

If I buy the 189€ kit, I will need to add the import taxe, the TVA, it would be something like 250€ at the end (the shipping fees seems to be free for my country ?) so at least, I would have a nice case. This is the better solution for modifying an iPod specially cause its solderless and all fits in a single PCB, the only complain things are the battery that have a longer flex cable than you require (it could be shorter from fabric) and the case despite looks cooler with a black offset case, it didn’t have the original pins so it’s needed applying glue, that could be a problem if you need to open it to replace SD cards or battery one day. I have a fully clear one from elite obsolete electronics and I really want to make this mod, so it couldn’t be difficult make a new custom clear 3D printed one in order to fit the new Bluetooth PCB but having all original retainer clips back

This seems like a fantastic product, but having gotten to be a bit of an audiophile there's very little that this gives me since the iPod can't natively play lossless formats (yes I know, Rockbox). The thing that I always loved about the iPod though was its default interface which Rockbox doesn't quite duplicate. Part of me is tempted to go down the road to madness and try to engineer a brand new board, but unfortunately I've never really managed hot plate/hot air rework, and it would definitely require stealing a lot of parts off of donor boards to accomplish. But how awesome would it be to implement new USB and charging circuitry on a dedicated replacement motherboard with USB C built in? Maybe even an onboard MicroSD slot if there's enough room.

It would be great if there was a way to fully replace the 30 pin connector with the USB C port, though having backwards compatibility with original docks is nice In theory internally it would just have to be connected to the USB 2.0 lines on the 30 pin connector Also would've preferred if that backplate weren't glued on since that makes it more difficult to upgrade the iPod in the future

Thank you! The glue is there to sort of keep the backplate in place. It is quite elastic and you can rub it off with your fingers if you want. I haven’t tried it but I imagine wiggling it out and slowly pulling out the glue would be an easy enough job!

Just a whim, but would it be possible to connect the iPhone to this iPod mod’s USB-C port? I usually transfer files I download to a spare USB, but being able to transfer mp3 files from my phone to the iPod directly, without the need of a computer would be awesome! If that were to be the case, it would honestly seal the deal for me.

  • @highlander723

The only problem is since you're going to glue it shut if the connector fails or the battery starts to go bad or you need to get back in there to reseat the microSD cards which does happen A lot with the iFlash cards... you can't get back in! Can you think of any alternatives other than gluing it together I don't know I'd even go so far as using duct tape or Scotch tape. I mean most of these iPods are going to be in a protecting case anyway Maybe the protecting case can hold it together?

  • @TechFi-te3ik

    @TechFi-te3ik

Hello. Yes, indeed, that's why the whole glue endevour is one of the few negative points in my review. It is not such a bad case though - you can still pull it apart with some force. The glue is quite elastic and if you use heat, you can probably make it easier - but it will be a messy situation indeed. I think the best case scenario would be if it was possible to manufacture a compatible clip-on case with a plastic back to allow for radio-waves to go through.

Nice job. And Happy New Year 2024 to you too. Wonder why Apple discontinued the iPod line of devices; true that any smartphone can act as an MP3 player, but it is not the same thing of having a dedicated device as music player. I believe Apple is actively discouraging the use of music players that operate independently of an iTunes server. I use an MP3 player exactly because I have music from CD and LPs which I want to play with total freedom. Actually a music player compatible with 1 TB micro-SD cards and Android 11 light cost $70 and had Bluetooth, USB-C, Wi-Fi, a variety of Codecs, and a 2,000 mAh battery. Thanks for the video, Happy New Year. Anthony

Hi Anthony, thank you for your comment. I think Apple saw no profits in iPods - they became a niche product since everyone now has a phone capable of playing music. Plus they could sell you Apple Music subscription instead of more expensive music via iTunes (or letting you rip your albums which they had no financial benefit from :)

while this looks nice, i'm kinda hoping in the future for solderless usb-c/30pin sync. additional colors/logos/storage labels? maybe utilize clips or a different design instead of glue in case you need to replace the battery in the future or upgrade the storage. maybe a thick back variant so that i can use iflash adapters + larger batteries in addition to this usb-c + bluetooth mod.

  • @TechFi-te3ik

The solderless usbc wouldn’t be possible imo since you have to connect the usbc to the motherboard somehow. But i agree on the glue and different design for the back-case. A clipped in design like the original backplate would be optimal.
