I had one that baffled me because it would not reset, but lo and behold, the positive (black) wire had pulled out of the romex nut in the box and the thing wasn't getting power, which is needed to reset. Turned out the coil in the romex nut was defective and allowed the errant wire to slip out of the connection. Put a new red r/n on it and carefully tightened it and it worked fine after that. Good video.

John, thank you for sharing some of your expertise with the world! Though I have had some fantastic mentors in my life, I have always been lacking when it comes to electrical work. Sure, I can run wire and do most of the basics, but there is no substitution for having the knowledge to back it. Troubleshooting and the knowledge to do so is where the value truly lies.

I found this very helpful. I needed to replace the GFCI outlet, but the novice electrician that I am i didn't pay attention to the "Line" and "Hot" wires. So when I hooked it back up the wires were crossed. Took me several hours walking around to 9 different outlets on the circuit testing and probing. Watched this video on my commute home from work (passenger) and realized the line and hot wires was probably it. Sure as shit, fixed it. So fricking simple. Thanks for the lesson, much appreciated.

Hey John...I'm an Emergency Room RN in NYC, retired from 2 jobs and currently working at Bellevue on my third retirement check. I have a house in the woods and the breezeway sockets (which was converted into a TV room) as well as the electrical sockets on the small porches on either side of the breezeway, all went dead. I couldnt find any tripped breakers, then discovered that a GFCI in the bathroom was tripped and would not reset...so I am guessing this might be the culprit. Im going to buy the meters necessary to check on the power as well as a new GFCI to replace the old. I just wanted you to know how glad I am that you are taking the time to make these videos and sharing your extensive knowledge base. I appreciate what you are doing and cannot begin to tell you how grateful that I am. I have shared you on my Facebook page and I hope that others will also benefit from your acquired wisdom. Most respectfully yours...Chris

Hi Mr. Shook. I thoroughly enjoyed your video on this. I *had* an issue with my downstairs GFCI/GFI popping out and not allowing the reset to stick. It turned out that there was some moisture in the GFI box...somewhere that kept it from keeping a reset. I used a hair dryer on the outlet for about 3 minutes, and at first it still wouldn't keep the reset. Then I watched your video on the basis of thinking that it was just a bad GFI that's 38 years old! However, about 45 minutes after I finished watching your video and subscribing to your channel, I went downstairs, pushed the reset and it stuck! Anyway, I am very impressed with your channel. I admire your experience and especially the story about the housekeeper & the GFI not holding the reset. FYI, I'm a 73 yr old retired IBM electrical engineer with only a HS diploma. I know quite a bit about computers, but barely have any full level of house wiring, breaker/fuse boxes experience. I DO appreciate your channel and plan on watching all your available videos. Thank you! Rick White☺👊

Excellent. I've been trying to troubleshoot a new gfi that I added to an outdoor box on my front porch. This all began when I decided to add a receptacle to the box on the front porch. Originally, that box only had the line and load wires directly attached to light the parlor lights and the outdoor lights. I decided to detach the wiring and hook them to a gfi because I wanted a receptacle on the porch. First, I only hooked up the line wires and it worked fine. When I added the load wires, the gfi automatically trips. This took me a while to figure this all out, but your video confirmed my own conclusions. I suspect that there is a problem somewhere with the outdoor lighting. They have not been used for several years and during one winter, while shoveling snow, I broke the glass case to one of the lamps and its been exposed to the elements. There's leaves and debris inside the socket, but I don't see any sign of burn marks. I'll probably change out the fixture and try again to see if that resolves the tripping. Any additional comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. PS, I don't know much about electric circuits other than from reading home improvement books on the subject and you tube videos like yours. Thanks.

Great video until the end, when you said you’re going to kick the bucket??? That was a sad ending. I don’t know what happens after this life, hopefully it is better than this place and nicer than all of us just kicking buckets. PS: I never thought about the expression “kicking the bucket” until now. Now that I think about it, I hope you don’t kick any buckets, but go out peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, with a smile on your face. My dad passed away last year, he was 84 years old. While it was very sad, he literally died in bed, surrounded by loved ones, with an actual smile on his face. It was the most shockingly peaceful thing I’ve ever seen. It was like his light here just slowly dimmed out and turned off as he saw another light he left this world for. I hope I am blessed with as peaceful a transition in 50-60 years and I see him again. 🙏

Thanks for your information. Solved a problem for me as I shared a neutral and wondered about it at the time of installation. Sure enough it would not let the GFCI flow, kept tripping and wouldn't reset. It was on a three and four way light circuit with other switches in the box I wasn't sure and connected the neutrals from two different circuits reasoning they would all meet at the panel anyway. Lesson learned. Take care. Doug

Your video helped me find a tough one. My daughter had used a steam floor cleaner in front of me and it shut off. The outlet lost power and the GFI had tripped. They said the cleaner's power cord would be very warm after using it so I thought it damaged the GFI or the outlet. I disconnected the load side of the GFI and it still tripped! They had a backsplash installed ~ a week ago and the other 3 outlets were in the circuit. I looked inside and saw that 2 had the bare ground wires close but not touching bared whites ~1/16" from each other. I pushed the grounds away and voila the GFI reset! I think the extra cleaner power from the last outlet somehow made the "aura" connect even after it was unplugged. Crazy!

You are a big help John. Moisture on the load side downstream of my GFCI was tripping it.

I replaced a GFCI outlet but could not get the reset button to lock when pressed. Scratched my head for some time, watched a couple videos, but this one clicked for me. Sloppy work on my part - assumed line and load were in same locations on old and new outlets. Appreciate the reminder! I guess I needed to hear it/read it several times before it clicked.

Enjoyed your video, very informative. I just had an issue with the GFCI outlet on my house. The one in my garage is inside. Anyway it got really cold, down in the teens and it tripped. I figured it got moisture inside and would work once the temperature warmed up. Luckily this was the case though it would not reset a couple days earlier. It is working fine now though. I might buy some of those child proof covers for the outside to try and prevent moisture in the future.
