As a 90s kid, we were exposed to a LOT of reruns and parents reliving most of their nostalgia that when reference come up, there's a high chance that we would get it. And BOY, I recognize a lot of them! Thanks, pops.
@JJAB91

I feel like that might be something newer generations might not really understand properly. Today kids grow up with the internet on every device, they can cultivate their own little world of media consumption. Back before the internet became a thing seen everywhere(it existed in the 90s but solely to household desktop computers) kids would instead watch a lot more TV and since most of the time their parents would control whats on the TV kids back then were exposed to a lot more older media than they do now. TV from the 50's, 60's, 70's etc. would be watched by kids in the '90s. I was born in 1991 so I am 32 now and I personally I feel like people my age(early 30s) tend to have a lot more knowledge in these eras of pop culture than many people even just a few years younger than me(mid or late 20s)

More specifically on the Jerry Garcia tap water joke, it was specifically LSD that Jerry and his crowd were known to dabble heavily in. There was an incident on Playboy After Dark, when the Grateful Dead were on the show to perform. One of the sound guys for the GD clashed with the TV stations sound guys, and decided to spike the coffee with LSD as a prank. By the end of the show everyone's dancing like mad to "turn on your lovelight" while the host is barely able to string a sentence together.

Some of these I did get as a kid, especially the old sitcoms (thanks to watching Nick at Nite). As for the humor and references, it was more in line for teenagers and young adults. People here saying the humour aged like milk and all that but I mean, this references were already ancient when the game was released :v The developers were probably aiming to give Gex's personality a retro charm, listening to this old timer references feels kinda like having a cool talk to an old parent about the stuff that aired on TV and theaters when they were your age, and I think that's awesome On the other hand, imagine how actually *aged* this would feel if the humour was centered about trying to stay hip and trendy with 90s teenagers

I cannot stop thinking about how gex would be a perfect smash character. Think about it, it would be a collab with sega Saturn and PlayStation as well, no one would be mad, and it would be a nice throwback. His gimmick could be his voice lines, and maybe a theme around being a secret agent.

He would need to have a fart attack and the ability to grapple enemies with his tongue. Maybe suction toes to allow him to crawl up walls etc? Yeah, he would be a great Smash fighter.

@@gnbman It was made by people who grew up during those decades they obviously did it for them. Plenty of creators do that with things they make. Gex shouldn't be any different. I mean he's a talking gecko who is addicted to TV during the 90s. Of course, he's going to reference pop culture from decades prior. People during the 90s had a huge nostalgia for the 50s - 70s. Plenty of things targeted towards children during the 90s made reference to those decades. Though I'd argue that the Gex series isn't really for anyone under 15 personally. Why a late 90's game makes refferences mostly from the 50-70... it was outdated even when it came out.
@NewCanada

Because that's the decades that the creators grew up in most likely. People make references to whatever influences them. No different from content creators making references to the 80s and 90s in current media. That's 30 to 40 years back. Gex 2's references weren't that much older in 1998. Like previously mentioned: these are the decades that the Gex creators most likely grew up in. Also the 90's was a decade rife with syndication on tv, so after an episode of a 90's show concluded it was extremely common for an 80's show, 70's show or even 50's show to air right after it. I was born in 87 and even I recognize a lot of these references, mostly due to shows being syndicated on afternoon tv.

The fact that they require explanation makes me feel old as hell

@@johnconnor2572 Personally, I already knew or understood about half of them. But some I didn't know their origins. Mostly the song lyric quotes. lol

@@TheRoyTeal96 Yeah some of those really old lyrics are the bulk of what went over my head too. I actually do reacall my dad being amused by a few of the those references I didn't get
"The thing with the flaven" is more accurately a Professor Frink reference from the Simpsons, who himself was an homage in mannerisms to Jerry Lewis.

Everyday is tail time! Especially when Gex Trilogy comes out!!!
Thank you foe making this. It always bugged me when people say Gex is stuck in the 90s. Most of his jokes predate the 90s . And even if he did make 90s jokes that still still doesn't mean he was bad. In fact he was one of the best 3d platformers from his time.
“Is it just me or am I engulfed in flames?!?”
Note to self: dont die in japan if jake paul is in town
In hindsight, Gex felt like playing a platformer as one of the hosts from Mystery Science Theater 3000, with the wisecracks, the obscure references, and the general smart-aleckyness. (For the record, I say this as a fan of both Gex and Mystery Science Theater 3000.)
A small thing to add, when Gex stated, "We got a 211 in progress baby." He did say a police code, but I think the voice he parodied was Austin Powers when he spoke was the important part of that reference.
The line “Has anyone seen Carol Anne” is likely a reference to Poltergeist, where the young girl Carol Anne disappears and is trapped inside of the TV.
First off great video, loved this game. Second, the "I'll murderize yah" is definitely a reference to moe from the three stooges. It was a repeated phrase of his and he said it with that exact pitch and inflection.
I can’t believe my dad wrote Gex.
“Thing with the...what. Wait, where am I!?” -Gex (20XX)
6:13 This could also be a reference to the Flintstones, as Barney is a character in that as well.

I thought that too, but the next line is about purple fungus, so I’m guessing that was to reference some kind of big flat purple feature in a level. I haven’t played the game though, only seen some gameplay clips
I've been waiting for someone to make this video for a long time, thank you so much.
You know what? As a kid who played both Gex & Gex 2 EtG back in their day, the fact that roughly 60-70% of Gex's one liners went right over my head didn't deter me from enjoying those games. They both were fun platformers and action adventure games with a lot of charm, plus my parents would laugh whenever they were in the room while I was playing and Gex fired off a one liner because they were old enough to understand the jokes. Great video mate!

5:27 The line is a parody of the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" host, Robin Leach.
At least Gex has good taste in music This whole video feels like a friday night afterparty on Hirohiko Araki's house
Thanks for the Gexplanation.
i could hear him trying to hold back the laugh when he said "It's tail time"
If there is ever a new Gex game, I want him to keep making weird 60s and 70s references instead of updating him. Wel... expect for a Dunkey reference, and maybe the Twitch streaming joke.
I really liked the Carltons going at different speeds for all the songs :)
Some of these make me wonder about the original context where the lines were used. Man, Gex legit sounds like Homer at times, other times he sounds like a completely different person altogether. The vocal range of his VA is something else.
1:17 i'm pretty sure that's also an austin powers impression
Thank you for this. I loved Gex 2 and 3 as a kid and although I still laughed because Gex was funny (his tones and voice changed so much or what he said was so outlandish to me at the time it was just funny without context) a lot of these references flew over my head hah hah I really wish they'd bring him back, would love to see his trilogy remade wit hthe treatment Spyro and Crash received.

Gex Trilogy was announced for modern consoles and PC.
Why hasnt this video exploded
Deadpool became the modern Gex the Gecko.
Gex: “Cutaway Jokes at Celebrity’s house.” Family Guy: “I got an idea!”
