My grandfather took my father to the 75 ann. reunion in 1938. My dad always remembered listening to the old vets discussing various actions. They used their canes to scratch in the dirt to show the battle movements. And, then discussed what they should have done differently!

My wife and I have wanted to visit Gettysburg for years. We were both civil war re-enactors back in the '90s. I was with the Second Vermont Volunteer Reg't. of Infantry, while she served in the U. S. Sanitary Commision. It was fun going to schools to give in-character presentations to the classes when they studied their Civil War unit. Walking on to the campus in uniform, my wife in her camp dress, and me having all my traps, and with my rifle musket over my shoulder was never an issue. (Obviously we had permission.) We were always well received. We would even bring some Civil War music.
My great great grandfather, Nelson S. Bartholomew was a trooper in the Michigan 5th Volunteer Cavalry regiment, company G under George A. Custer. Was involved in the charges on the East Cavalry Field on July 3rd, that repulsed the flanking action of J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry. He survived the war, living to the age of almost 84, dying in 1914.

I am a believer that it was that engagement that decided the battle. The Union position's strength was also its greatest weakness and Lee's plan was brilliant in this regard. This part of July 3 is almost always overlooked. Stuart's lack of preparedness for an engagement as he advanced, for whatever reason, is just head shakingly shocking to me. Pickett's charge was indeed doomed once Custer sent Stuart in retreat. IMHO your Grandfather played a part in perhaps the most important engagement for the preservation of the Union that day. Since childhood I have felt that black and white photographs of historical events and places distorted the reality of the thing. The world has always been in colour and human beings have, with very few exceptions, been seeing it that way from the beginning. Probably 90% of photos from that era would have been in color had they had color fast dyes back then. The very first photos were all in color!!! Yes color came before B&W photography!! There are still some color positives in France that were the first photos EVER taken, sadly the dyes didn't hold up too well. Even into the mid to late 20th century, B&W was more popular than color for the very same reason. A lot of mine from the 60's are fading, but thanks to photo editing software I'm bringing them back to life.

It's always a magnitude greater fascination to witness. Clearer and cleaner images from back when the technology was in it's infancy like an impossible window back. We can't look back beyond that but it is infinitely fascinating just to be peering into the past and. Think about that being the reality of present
Great history pictures ....these you never see in history books....this is real stuff ..great job...
Such amazing photos. i can’t ever get enough of this part of,our American story. Thank you for sharing.
We are from New Hampshire by Lake Wini!! My great great Grandfather fought in Gettysburg out of the 6TH New Hampshire infantry mustered out of Keene N.H.. They were known as the,"Bully Sixth". His name is Enoch Coffin and he is buried in Plymouth N.H. The Goverment paid him in land and we own the last remaining piece of that land. Thanks for the video!
My ancestors on my dad's side fought in this battle with the Texas 1st Brigade. I saw the monument to them in 2019 and it was hard not to weep on the ground I was standing on. Devil's Den was a place ill suited for an assault, yet that's exactly what they were thrown into. It was a sobering experience to be standing exactly where my forefathers had died.

Randy, sorry for your loss. My mother’s grandfather was with Picket, on the first day. He was hit in the leg in the battle. He was able to crawl under the porch of a house in the battle field where was captured by the yankee troops, bandaged, and was exchanged for confederates later. He went on to fight in every battle after that till the end. Funny thing, he lived only just down the road from Appomattox in Bedford County Virginia. My mother as a child asked to see the hole in his leg where he was hit.
Color brings things to life. Presentation was good, but expected more pictures of the battle itself.
Amazing, simply amazing, to see the colorized version; it just makes it even MORE real & as mentioned, makes one think perhaps a bit differently. Great job & thanx from TN!🇺🇸
My great great grandfather served in the Connecticut volunteer from Ireland. Was captured in Kingston NC April 1865 lost his fingers in his right hand from a artillery shell. My uncle who served aboard a destroyer in WW11 in the Pacific lost his fingers in his left hand while manning a 50cal during a kamazie attack I lost the partial use of my fingers in my left as a police officer.

I've always wanted to do a before and after regarding where bodies were shown to have pictures taken. Unfortunately, I have to rely on rocks because trees have either been destroyed, cut, or have grown much taller. There are alot of photos in the Seminary Ridge Museum that I collected so I could so the before and after but I have never been able to take the time to do it. Maybe I'll do that this year. My husband and I vacation there every year (we are combat veterans and we consider Gettysburg our Disney World).

Best vacation I ever took.... Beautiful country.
I visited Gettisburg battlefield with my cousin a month ago.feel very excited to see the spot where President Abraham Lincoln delivered the famous Gettisburg address. This was one of the greatest experience of my lifetime
In my reading, one thing always impressed me: people today cannot grasp how truly horrible roads were back then. Taking a wagon ten miles in many places was a real days work. They would be ecstatic to experience most of our rush hour traffic, where you don't risk losing a wheel or have to get out and pull.
Thank you all , been there as a young child and again with my own children in 2002 they to this day loved Gettysburg. We wnnt to Washington DC to show them the capital of our nation , they enjoyed it but wanted to get back to Gettysburg and see and learn more . To this day they all say it was one of their favorite vacations...
I also am generally not a fan of movie colorization, but here, I have to agree that they make these photos so much more immediate in feeling and it is amazing what you experts can discern from them. Very interesting broadcast. Thank you!

All 4 of my grandparents oddly enough immigrated from England so I didn’t have any family fight in the Civil War, but it’s still the most fascinating time in American history to me.
The photographs are really amazing, and helped me re-construct many of the battles, and as in all wars, the untimely deaths of so many, mostly young men, even some younger boys. Even read about a young woman, who is the only civilian casualty.
John L Burns also fought in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War along with his service in the Civil War. His gun was an antique flintlock musket. Check out his wiki page, the old man was nothing but fight.

Growing up my Grand parents lived in Berke holler just outside of Franklin Tn. Every summer we kids, cousins and all would stay on the farm and help Big Daddy and Big Momma in the fields anyway their was a small confederate grave yard on the farm that was surrounded by a three foot rock wall and old metal gate daughter’s of the confederate’s would come out every year and flags on their graves. I was 6 or 7 years old playing hide and seek with cousins one night and didn’t think about it but climbed the wall and while waiting to be found I went to sleep in that grave yard, I’ve never been afraid of the dead since my Grand Father found me asleep on a grave. My great uncle William murray fought for the union army died July 3 1863 he is buried about 50 yards from where Abe Lincoln gave his address speech along the sidewalk

My great great grandfather was in the war in Gettysburg.
I'm quite surprised more comments don't address the fact that Gettysburg houses on the battlefield were so "modest" as the narrator puts it. There was just such a HUGE difference in the homes of the rich and the homes of everyone else. My family was very rural up until the 1950s , so I look at some of these modest properties in a slightly different "color". That said, I congratulate all the people who were involved in this whole project. Fascinating, as real history always is.

Excellent People great job Thanks to all of Historians
As a metal detector enthusiast I have seen many of the bullets from the Civil War. The size and weight just huge. Damage to unfortunate soldiers had to be severe. War is Hell.
My last name is Meade .. My dad looks ALOT like George Gordon Meade . When my siblings and I were kids we used to laugh about it because we would look at a picture of George Meade and say it’s My dad and that he hopped in a time machine .. Every winter break we would drive back to our hometown of NY and on the way always took a picture with the Meade statue.
I love this stuff, I love all history. Many Thanks from Scotland.
This was fascinating. The details that could be seen in color photos that I've seen only in black and white before.
Thank you. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Hope I can visit Gettysburg sometime in my life.
Great stuff! One little known story of Gettysburg was the immediate aftermath and the terrible ordeal for the wounded because both armies marched off-and left little in the way of caring for the thousands of wounded and thousands of bodies rapidly turning in the July sun. Most of the doctors and surgeons had left with the army and left behind only a handful of orderlies, little food, bandages, etc. A Sanitary Commission agent visited, was horrified at what he saw and immediately called for help, so finally weeks after the battle relief swarmed upon the little town.
At the 360 panorama dome experiance, where you can see all around and hear everything. That affected me the most. I cried like a baby.
Great picture and stories. Thanks for sharing.
It is stunning to realize how many lives were lost in Gettysburg. Imagine the sadness of the people living in the town after the battle.
From Northern Wisconsin Have Civil War ancestor buried in Virginia where he was killed in the Civil War
What I personally took from our visit there after 2 days of investigating, was a very somber presence. My thoughts were…if we would be able to share the true story of Gettysburg with the leaders of our adversaries today..of what our ancestors were willing to do to their fellow countrymen to eliminate the threat of losing what had earlier been won, well I’ve got to believe that they would not be as interested in trying the US on in a conflict! Even in this more modern era.
I enjoy seeing both, fun to see original but also see some colors, thanks for doing this.
Awesome presentation thanks for the program!
