I was with the Second Vermont Volunteer Reg't. of Infantry, while she served in the U. S. Sanitary Commision. It was fun going to schools to give in-character presentations to the classes when they studied their Civil War unit. Walking on to the campus in uniform, my wife in her camp dress, and me having all my traps, and with my rifle musket over my shoulder was never an issue. (Obviously we had permission.) We were always well received. We would even bring some Civil War music.

I am a believer that it was that engagement that decided the battle. The Union position's strength was also its greatest weakness and Lee's plan was brilliant in this regard. This part of July 3 is almost always overlooked. Stuart's lack of preparedness for an engagement as he advanced, for whatever reason, is just head shakingly shocking to me. Pickett's charge was indeed doomed once Custer sent Stuart in retreat. IMHO your Grandfather played a part in perhaps the most important engagement for the preservation of the Union that day. Probably 90% of photos from that era would have been in color had they had color fast dyes back then. The very first photos were all in color!!! Yes color came before B&W photography!! There are still some color positives in France that were the first photos EVER taken, sadly the dyes didn't hold up too well. Even into the mid to late 20th century, B&W was more popular than color for the very same reason. A lot of mine from the 60's are fading, but thanks to photo editing software I'm bringing them back to life.

A friend of mine has the last name of Hazelet ! Even showed me the pistol his past relative had ! Said his relative was wounded at Gettysburg ! Later when reading the Civil war times I found out LT . Hazelet was killed out right in the battle leaning over his commanding officer ! My friend did not know this for the family only knew he was wounded . It was a shock for him too find out the truth , As for me it was a treat to handle his side arm of this most historical battle in Civil war history !

One of lees calv generals and governor of sc during reconstruction as well as serving as raiload chairman during grover clevelands administration. It certainly is beyond comprehension when bloodlines are connected. However, i have always been enamered with this american generation never being able wrap my mind around just how horrific this conflict was to these people on both sides. Fellow countrymen pitted against each other during the intial clash of anchent warfare vs modern war weapons that created the absolute bloodiest conflict anyone could imagine. What a way to find your country just what a hundred years after gaining its independance. Mindboggling!

He was able to crawl under the porch of a house in the battle field where was captured by the yankee troops, bandaged, and was exchanged for confederates later. He went on to fight in every battle after that till the end. Funny thing, he lived only just down the road from Appomattox in Bedford County Virginia. Growing up my Grand parents lived in Berke holler just outside of Franklin Tn. Every summer we kids, cousins and all would stay on the farm and help Big Daddy and Big Momma in the fields anyway their was a small confederate grave yard on the farm that was surrounded by a three foot rock wall and old metal gate daughter’s of the confederate’s would come out every year and flags on their graves. I was 6 or 7 years old playing hide and seek with cousins one night and didn’t think about it but climbed the wall and while waiting to be found I went to sleep in that grave yard, I’ve never been afraid of the dead since my Grand Father found me asleep on a grave. I'm quite surprised more comments don't address the fact that Gettysburg houses on the battlefield were so "modest" as the narrator puts it. There was just such a HUGE difference in the homes of the rich and the homes of everyone else. My family was very rural up until the 1950s , so I look at some of these modest properties in a slightly different "color". That said, I congratulate all the people who were involved in this whole project. Fascinating, as real history always is.

As a metal detector enthusiast I have seen many of the bullets from the Civil War. The size and weight just huge. Damage to unfortunate soldiers had to be severe. War is Hell.

My last name is Meade .. My dad looks ALOT like George Gordon Meade . When my siblings and I were kids we used to laugh about it because we would look at a picture of George Meade and say it’s My dad and that he hopped in a time machine .. Every winter break we would drive back to our hometown of NY and on the way always took a picture with the Meade statue.

Great stuff! One little known story of Gettysburg was the immediate aftermath and the terrible ordeal for the wounded because both armies marched off-and left little in the way of caring for the thousands of wounded and thousands of bodies rapidly turning in the July sun. Most of the doctors and surgeons had left with the army and left behind only a handful of orderlies, little food, bandages, etc. A Sanitary Commission agent visited, was horrified at what he saw and immediately called for help, so finally weeks after the battle relief swarmed upon the little town.

What I personally took from our visit there after 2 days of investigating, was a very somber presence. My thoughts were…if we would be able to share the true story of Gettysburg with the leaders of our adversaries today..of what our ancestors were willing to do to their fellow countrymen to eliminate the threat of losing what had earlier been won, well I’ve got to believe that they would not be as interested in trying the US on in a conflict! Even in this more modern era.
