Gettysburg 3D Photo Tour
Garry Adelman is joined by modern war photographer Louie Palu for a photo tour of the Rose Woods at Gettysburg. Did you know that Civil War era photographs were meant to be viewed in 3D? #civilwarphotography #gettysburgphotography #3dphotography
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

We're rolling the dice with no age-restriction on this one. We believe pieces like this hold educational value across a multitude of subjects (military history, social studies, history of photography, etc). Hopefully it holds.

I can't love this enough. One of the best ABT's KZread presentations.
Photographer would have been overwhelmed by all the senses present that day. No judgement can be made against the photographer because his work was groundbreaking and historic and necessary. Thank you fo this vid.
Thank the Lord that these brave photographers showed the horrors of this war. I cannot imagine what they went through aferswards. We would not know the bravery of these men.
Another outstanding video sir. I was chased out of that field several years ago by a large white horse. To stand there with Frassanitos book in hand, lining up the rocks and saying to myself “Right Here!”never gets old.
Incredible. Thank you. Mr. Palu is absolutely brilliant!
Some years back I visited Pamplin Park in Petersburg and they had an exhibition devoted to Civil War photography and many images in 3D. It was breathtaking to see some of the images I'd seen many times before in a new way. Great presentation!
Thank you so much for making these videos, this one is especially fascinating!
THIS is an incredible video. Well done ABT! Wow, so good. I love the perspective that Louie brings. So cool...
That’s so amazing to see those photos placed where they were taken. Equally as amazing to have a current photographer giving his perceptions both on the photographs and on the history.
Outstanding! Really enjoyed this!! Thank you!
Fantastic presentation from the point of view of an artist, thank you.
What an exceptional, intelligent and illuminating presentation. A beautiful encounter between a contemporary documentary photographer and those true pioneers of visionary photography, Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan. The dialogue between Garry and Louie was exceptional in its discourse on the photography of present and the photography of the past, (while standing at the very place where that dialogue had its source and where that history was made). Not just corpses, but human beings who had a life before and (thanks to the photographers and historians) a form of life, after. Truly, hallowed ground. Many thanks to William A. Frassanito, Garry Adelman, Louie Palu and the ABT; and not forgetting James Gibson, Timothy O'Sullivan and Alexander Gardner. Walt Whitman was accurate in his estimation of Gardner as someone who "saw farther than his camera".
You guys are hands down the most informative and in depth CW gurus on the net. Probably my favorite channel on KZread!
Brilliant video, i remember standing in those very same spots and being totally blown away to be standing in a place so full of history! Keep them coming and thanks for all your work! Best wishes from the Uk. 👍
Very cool, very educational! Thank you from Milwaukee
Very very very interesting video and discussion. Thank you. More of this please.
This is so wonderful to be a part of! Thanks
Awesome job. One of the better ones. To have a guest to really put some input was great narrative was awesome. Thanks
Excellent conversation here. Very interesting. Thanks for posting / making this
Thanks to Louie Palu for his insights. Great video.
This was a great video about the Civil War dead at Gettysburg. Thank you!
Excellent as usual. Thank you so much.
When I was last at Gettysburg, one couldn’t get across the fence-line into this part of the Rose farm. Glad to see that is apparently no longer the case.
This was an amazing presentation. Thank you!
Thank you Gary and Louie and very interesting the 3D photographs. Garner and Brady were just showing the carnage of war. And the posing of dead bodies had to be terrible. Thank you for sharing this point of view on early photography. 💯👍
Awesome video ABT! Rose Farm is my favorite place on the battlefield at Gettysburg!
More Frassanito location matching please! Soooooooo entertaining. Living history at its best! Thank you Garry!
Great great great!!! So many dead in one place but the wounded would have doubled or tripled the numbers of bodies that we can see. Wow. Keep up the good work!!
This kind of content is what sets ABT apart! Well done!
Any time I see a video with Garry Adelman and Civil War Photography in the title, it's an instant click.
Thank you I am here at GB for the first time today- fascinating
Sad thing is to see those men photographed looking horrible after laying dead for four days since they were killed on July 2. They were Brave men who likely had been at Chancellorsville, marched all the way into PA and did not fall out of the march as they could have, nor did they fall out of the long march to get to the attack position late afternoon of July 2. Then they went into battle and faced the deadly fire. And remember for every one dead soldier there was usually 3-4 wounded. So many dead in this area was because the Union troops were in a rear slope defense and these Confederates walked right into a point blank fire. These men photographed were Brave men each and every one!
I LOVE Gary's enthusiasm
❤❤wow! Love this and thank you for this!❤❤❤
Beat believe I had my red cyan anaglyph glasses on deck for this one tyvm
This was awesome! I would love to experience this!
Did you forget the Viewmaster we grew up with, Garry? Those stereographic pics would have been perfect for the device, but I don't recall ever seeing any for sale for the Viewmaster. .
Does not the word photography roughly translate to write with light? Fantastic video to both guys !
Love this crossover, as a photographer who loves Louie Palu's work and the history of Gettysburg, this is fantastic.
During the 159th me and the GF visited the Rose Farm and using Frassanitos book (GF got to meet him during the 160th at his book signing) we found all the spots and lined up the photo's. (would have loved to do that in 3D) it's such an amazing spot that hardly no 1 visits, we just had the horses grazing , getting to the field can be a little tricky but worth the walk
So I’m assuming that by the time the photographers got to the battlefields most bodies were buried? I would think you would see hundreds laying around. Also, did any of the photographers take photos of the fresh graves before soldiers were moved to cemeteries to show the magnitude of the losses as well? Great video!

This series of photos were taken on/around the Rose farm on the southern part of the field. The dead there, as I understand it, were the last buried so they were still unburied for several days after the battle. I believe when Gardner arrived, many of the bodies from the 1st and 3rd days battles were buried already. That is my understanding.
They had to have been laid out. Bodies dont fall neatly. I think the wagon adds to the image. Protography in 1860 did have a ethos of manufacturing a story like a painting so moving bodies for effect was in the same vein of a staged image using actors to set a scene that was then photographed

They were probably laid out for burial, not photography. But who knows
Wanted to check this area out during the 160th but signs saying no trespassing. I would love to check the area out. Is there a reason they had it off limits

The house and property are undergoing a rehabilitation project by the park.
I believe only one body was moved. Just because that rock wall look like a good photo opp. I believe it’s safe to say that every other dead pretty much was already where they were
✌
Outstanding! Thank you for sharing
Are these 3d pics staying there?

Garry's personal collection 😆
Funny how the stereotype viewers then the 3D glasses were the original VR headsets.
It would be kind of cool if the NPS set this up as a permanent installation.
Wouldn't it be easier to collect the bodies as a group rather than scattered?
There's people back home saying, "Why don't he write?"
19:05 found this so interesting❤
Thanks great job
Fellow SU hello
"Don't bid against me...." LOLS
What's the point of this? Just a video of y'all looking at pictures from the place it was taken and not showing the viewer, just not getting it
SAVE OUR BATTLEFIELDS AMERICA 🇺🇸
I love the 3D glasses. Gary with the hat and glasses reminds me of the Green Hornet. I kept expecting him to say “Let’s roll, Kato.”
