This reminds me of when I was 17 and completely rebuilt my old Volkswagen. When I was almost done taking everything apart my grandma came into the garage and said with tears in her eyes "how will you ever get that thing back together again? It is all you have!" I never gave it a thought then but as I look at this project today, I kind of get the same feeling my grandmother must have had. This has turned out to be quite a project. There is nothing free about it. Every nook and cranny will have been redone. Putting those windows back in is no piece of cake. BTW, when that VW was done and painted, it looked a gem sparkling in the sun. This plane may very well give the same feeling I had with my VW.

I’m pretty sure every now and then when I look at all of those parts I start to tear up as well 🤣😂 We’ll get her done !
Pro Tips: When removing the windows with a putty knife. 1. Use a smaller (and more flexible) putty knife. Joe already said it - makes the work easier. 2. Spray a surfactant (I use glass cleaner) on both sides of the putty knife. It helps the knife to slide easier on the adhesive, helps to protect the window from scratches, and keeps the adhesive from re-sticking. Great work, guys.

As someone that built race cars for years as daily job, we always fully assembled electronics, etc before sending it in for paint. It helps avoiding unnecessary holes, etc. just my two cents… don’t rush sending it out for paint. Think it through. Love the show boys. Good work and good luck! Cheers from BC, Canada
Another pro tip guys, get yourselves an air compressor and some drill motors, this will make rivet removal so much easier. The higher RPMs will cut down your time in half and make the job so much more efficient. Great job guys!
I did not realize how tedious this Rebuild would be!!! WOW!
Honestly, I really appreciate when you show clips of what you get for lunch/dinner! It gives the videos a really nice variety feeling and it's a really good pace changer for the video! Hope you keep doing that!

The amount of work and money you are putting into this restoration explains why so many of these planes line the outskirts of so many small airports
Wow. I've been watching this series from the beginning and I gotta say you guys are going the distance to do everything right. I can't wait for this airframe to be declared airworthy and see it fly again.
I was going to go with coffee today (morning here in Oz) but after seeing someone else having coffee, you GOTTA have a Coffee!
That´s a lot of work to do, congrats! And Joe, don't forget using mask while sanding nose of airplane. Be safe!
Sanding and pressure air blowing dust from old aeronautical paint ... without a PP3/P100 mask. Wow.
Incredible amount of work on the 401 over the last year, the hours the team have put in already must be insane. Going to be a great day when she takes off for the first time ❤.
I’m months late but you guys are the best, Joe deserves his new smile and all the happiness in the world. I have so much that is so tough to deal with daily but watching you warms my heart and soul. God bless y’all

Your A&P's have been busting their ass getting the 401 ready, you should be very proud of them.
As much as it would be nice to see this done, dragging out the process by doing it absolutely thoroughly is that it makes for even more interesting videos (which pay for the work being done). I'm OK with this going on for a while, I love seeing a *full* restoration rather that the minimum required!

Also don't forget with aviation if you don't trust your life to it it's got to be replaced or rebuilt. That plane is literally a life support system when in flight. That's not something to just do the bare minimum on like some airlines do.
Man. I prepped and painted a few cars in my life. I thought that was a lot of work. But this... :) haha! Jason and the rest of you guys - as always - you have my respect!
Sanding paint that old without a respirator is a death sentence! The dry ice blasting machine ya'll had in the beginning would have been way more efficient and less destructive than the drill
I never dreamed when you started this project that you’d have to disassemble the 401 to the extent that you have. Wow! What a tremendous amount of work. 😮
I don't think there is anything left you can take off of this plane. It is absolutely crazy how much you are doing. I can't wait for the day you actually start putting something back together instead of tearing more part. LOL. Keep up the great work
Absolutely incredible! I've been working on my pilot's license almost side by side with this series and seeing the distance and progress you all have covered always remind me of my own progress as well! I look forward to seeing the 401 in the air!
All these men are so AMAZINGLY SKILLED! Please tell Joe to wear a respirator when spraying that stuff, It’s really bad for the health, Really bad, Guy is so brilliant don’t want to see them get exposed to any chemicals. God bless the entire team! 💪💪🔥🔥

Thanks for the long video. Love the attention to detail.
Years ago i worked for a air craft paint shop. We found that MEK and scotch pads ( red) to clean rivets up. We also used aluminum 1 inch tape to mask around anything we didn't want the zebco paint stripper to get to. The paint we removed was epoxy based most of the time. And it was the hardest to remove. Look great the cleaning never ends it seems.
Well done guys, a remarkable amount of time-consuming fiddle fart work!!!! This prep is no doubt the most time-consuming part of the job!!! You all will no doubt be glad to see the back end of this part of the restoration and I don't blame you one bit!!

Got my A&P ticket back in 1975. Once I started working on 152, 172, 182, 210's I was always amazed at ho then the aluminum was. Helped restore a 1943 PT -19 and a 1954 T-34. Then I started working on heavy duty stuff in civilian service for the Air Force, F-111, F-106, F-104, f108, C-130 Hercules and a few others. Big difference. Retired now and miss all of it.

Hello just asking for some free advice haha I'm about to be prepping a pretty huge project that is recycling multiple older aluminum riveted structures with 1/16" thin skin that will be used to float in salt water. I was under impression using a brass brush like he is in video would be bad for prep because of dissimilar metal getting impregnated in the aluminum, I' under the impression a stainless brush would be better. I'm looking at doing hydro sand blasting to keep costs down but am also worried that since water used isn't distilled that the minerals in the water could impregnate the aluminum and cause corrosion issues underneath the paint in the future, possibly thinking rubbing down with acetone after the hydro blast could wash away the minerals to avoid mineral deposits. any comments on this approach greatly appreciated

It really has been a great journey with everyone ! Bittersweet that it's all coming to an end, but I am excited to see her in the sky !
After running a flight school for years with numerous aircraft three things I did was painted the aircraft at every overhaul for corrosion control and replaced all the glas at paint to not have cracked or yellowed windows. Also magnaflixed the engine mounts. Usually replaced all the plastic moulding too. Seems like a lot of extra work but it Saved a lot work an money in the long run.

Seeing the 401all stripped down like this just reminds me of all the effort that went in way in the beginning getting it cleaned and buffed, detailing the inside. Remember seeing them al crunching it with the buffers making the old paint so nice and shiny? Remember the cardetailer that went crazy with the steamcleaner on the inside roasting himself? Kind of seems like a painful waste of time now everything interior has been taken out and the buffed up paintjob stripped to bear metal. We still loved it and every step now seems like a major step in getting it flying in all its former glory.

Man, how many drill bits did you guys go through on this project. Hahaha, almost every episode you are having to drill out rivets. Really loving the series man. Binge watching it atm to catch up. Also want to hit on a subject I've seen mentioned in previous comments. Some people are saying this stuff is scripted, fake, and click baited. My personal thoughts are that they are just used to being lied to because it's, sad to say, pretty common. You have quality production, passion, and a great group of guys. Honestly bro, I would take those comments as a compliment. It means you are making content at a quality to compete with big media companies. This brings back memories of A&P school back in the early 90’s where we stripped down a Piper Apache with that old yellow stripper that just made everything fall off, then washed everything down with gallons of MEK, including our hands. Much more toxic but boy did it work. Then in Phoenix on my first job out of A&P school it amazed me to see the paint crews come in and completely strip a DC-10 down to bare aluminum in one 12 hour shift. Aircraft painters have got to be some of the least recognized folks for the amount of effort and talent required to do their work properly.

Great job guys, this plane is going to look so fresh with a new paint job, can't wait. I'm guessing the windows and everything else that needs rivets need to be in place before the paint job, otherwise the new rivets would need painting. Plus damaging the new paint. At least doing it this way, you know everything is going to be ship shape 😀
It's crazy all the time in the beginning with pressure washing and buffing out the paint just to strip it down in the end......same with the interior, all that time cleaning taking apart the interior - reassembling it - just to completely take it out.
