This reminds me of when I was 17 and completely rebuilt my old Volkswagen. When I was almost done taking everything apart my grandma came into the garage and said with tears in her eyes "how will you ever get that thing back together again? It is all you have!" I never gave it a thought then but as I look at this project today, I kind of get the same feeling my grandmother must have had. This has turned out to be quite a project. There is nothing free about it. Every nook and cranny will have been redone. Putting those windows back in is no piece of cake. BTW, when that VW was done and painted, it looked a gem sparkling in the sun. This plane may very well give the same feeling I had with my VW.

Pro Tips: When removing the windows with a putty knife. 1. Use a smaller (and more flexible) putty knife. Joe already said it - makes the work easier. 2. Spray a surfactant (I use glass cleaner) on both sides of the putty knife. It helps the knife to slide easier on the adhesive, helps to protect the window from scratches, and keeps the adhesive from re-sticking. Great work, guys.

We also used aluminum 1 inch tape to mask around anything we didn't want the zebco paint stripper to get to. The paint we removed was epoxy based most of the time. And it was the hardest to remove. Look great the cleaning never ends it seems.

Then I started working on heavy duty stuff in civilian service for the Air Force, F-111, F-106, F-104, f108, C-130 Hercules and a few others. Big difference. Retired now and miss all of it.

Hello just asking for some free advice haha I'm about to be prepping a pretty huge project that is recycling multiple older aluminum riveted structures with 1/16" thin skin that will be used to float in salt water. I was under impression using a brass brush like he is in video would be bad for prep because of dissimilar metal getting impregnated in the aluminum, I' under the impression a stainless brush would be better. I'm looking at doing hydro sand blasting to keep costs down but am also worried that since water used isn't distilled that the minerals in the water could impregnate the aluminum and cause corrosion issues underneath the paint in the future, possibly thinking rubbing down with acetone after the hydro blast could wash away the minerals to avoid mineral deposits. any comments on this approach greatly appreciated

Seeing the 401all stripped down like this just reminds me of all the effort that went in way in the beginning getting it cleaned and buffed, detailing the inside. Remember seeing them al crunching it with the buffers making the old paint so nice and shiny? Remember the cardetailer that went crazy with the steamcleaner on the inside roasting himself? Kind of seems like a painful waste of time now everything interior has been taken out and the buffed up paintjob stripped to bear metal. We still loved it and every step now seems like a major step in getting it flying in all its former glory.

Man, how many drill bits did you guys go through on this project. Hahaha, almost every episode you are having to drill out rivets. Really loving the series man. Binge watching it atm to catch up. Also want to hit on a subject I've seen mentioned in previous comments. Some people are saying this stuff is scripted, fake, and click baited. My personal thoughts are that they are just used to being lied to because it's, sad to say, pretty common. You have quality production, passion, and a great group of guys. Honestly bro, I would take those comments as a compliment. It means you are making content at a quality to compete with big media companies. You know, the ones millions watch, the "reality TV" shows, that are completely scripted, and BS. Love what you guys are doing. Thank you for the great content.

Jason, another great video. I love all the progress your team is making. I like how you show all the tedious work it takes to do it right. The magnitude of restoring the 401 is daunting. Your faith and determination to restore it is inspiring. Keep it up, and I am excited to see it fly into Oshkosh this summer.

wire brushes were not recomended while i was work on aircraft the problem is that it will leave little pieces in the aluminum causing dissimilar corrosion. 21 yrs naval aviation and 27 years contractor to government aircraft.

This brings back memories of A&P school back in the early 90’s where we stripped down a Piper Apache with that old yellow stripper that just made everything fall off, then washed everything down with gallons of MEK, including our hands. Much more toxic but boy did it work. Then in Phoenix on my first job out of A&P school it amazed me to see the paint crews come in and completely strip a DC-10 down to bare aluminum in one 12 hour shift. Aircraft painters have got to be some of the least recognized folks for the amount of effort and talent required to do their work properly.

Great job guys, this plane is going to look so fresh with a new paint job, can't wait. I'm guessing the windows and everything else that needs rivets need to be in place before the paint job, otherwise the new rivets would need painting. Plus damaging the new paint. At least doing it this way, you know everything is going to be ship shape 😀

It's crazy all the time in the beginning with pressure washing and buffing out the paint just to strip it down in the end......same with the interior, all that time cleaning taking apart the interior - reassembling it - just to completely take it out.
