Getting Started with Sheep + Starting a Farm Business | Grace the Shepherdess

I am noticing a trend in the homesteading world toward raising sheep. There are so many great reasons to consider adding sheep to your homestead, and Grace the Shepherdess is here to share with us all about her small-scale regenerative sheep farming operation. She talks through some of the different breeds of sheep and what they are useful for, the ins and outs of rotational grazing with sheep, and the profitability of raising sheep in today’s market. If you are working with a small piece of land or you are simply interested in adding a smaller-scale ruminant to your homestead, join in on this conversation with the Shepherdess!
In this episode, we cover:
Revitalizing the health of a flock of sheep through grazing management
A description of hair sheep and their primary purpose
What research Grace did to determine that sheep were a far more profitable endeavor for her than cattle
The difference between how sheep interact with pasture versus cattle
Addressing parasite issues effectively in sheep
Being prepared to care for various health concerns that may affect your sheep

I couldn’t believe my luck. I’ve just started looking into raising sheep. I am a very small homestead looking for sources for meat and dairy. I had always thought of goats until I learned more about them. So far my research is looking good for sheep. Thanks for this channel.

@@Jj-gi2uv I don’t have predators, but parasites is another item. I do understand why and how to worm, but still much to learn about sheep. 😊

I have to take issue with the comment that the meat from fiber sheep is gamey. We raise fiber sheep and are 100% grass based, moving the animals 1-2 times per day. As long as the slaughter facility takes care- which doesn't always happen- to keep the fleece away from the carcass, the flavor will be wonderful. I also think that the creep feed often fed to sheep detrimentally affects the meat- although I don't have data to prove this. We've butchered up to a 5 year old ram and, as long as the cut isn't too fatty, the flavor is fine.

The discussion of hair breeds left a little to be desired. If you want large hair sheep, you get Katahdins from a show flock. Normal commercial Katahdins are a good medium-sized breed. The Dorper advantage is fast-growing lambs and heavy muscling. Depending on where you are in the country St. Croix are pretty rare, and other hair breeds like Painted Desert, Royal White, or Barbados Blackbelly may be easier to find.

Just a note: for those farmers who are looking to sell their animals...find your local Muslim communities. We slaughter animals monthly for our food ...cows, lambs, goats, chickens, camels.. Obviously no pork but you can make good money, even being in the countryside, they will come to you if you have animals and a place they can slaughter and hang the animals to skin and gut. We used to have a farmer outside San antonio and, especially on our holidays, 50-100 guys would be out their slaughtering and I am sure the farmer made a killing. Market your animals to halal grocery stores also...they can come out once a week, as did our friend who had a store, and slaughter 50 lambs or more to sell in his store. There is a market and a need if anyone wants to make some money 💰

In ancient mysticism Sheep meant thoughts. That’s why sheep hearders are always in the Bible. Goats are thoughts that devour your higher mind. Unfortunately religions ruined the interpretation of the Bible and took sheep and goats as to mean Christians and those who will burn in hell. It’s sad when you realize people have ruined the experience of existence just because they take away the keys of knowledge
