Getting Started: Stationeers Solar Tracking Logic

Ойындар

Stationeers is a fun but complex and challenging game, this is the second in a short series of tutorials aimed at helping people get enough understanding to be able to explore on their own. In this tutorial I cover how to set up a simple single axis solar tracking logic circuit to dramatically increase the power output from the adjustable solar panels.
Stationeers is a game in early access on Steam which you can find here store.steampowered.com/app/54...
If you'd like to see some more extended Stationeers gameplay head over to / flipsie for the VODs of my multiplayer stream series

A little tip for those who plan on going 2x axis from here: you can link horizontal to same sensor, but then halve the Vertical value, so that it wont turn away from the sun on afternoon. Also, Solar Panels can be mounted sideways on the frames - looking cool, and functional as well. Nice Tut, Splitsie, looking forward to one on how to make -freeze dried- greenhouse tomatoes.

True. When I first looked up solar tracking, I found a tutorial video, where there was may be 10 minutes of how to build it and another 30-40 minutes was "wasted" on him gathering missing ores and making missing stuff for the tracking... that is not how I imagine a tutorial to be like (unless it is about mining and production :P)

Man, I cannot thank you enough for your 'Getting Started' tutorials! I bought this game roughly 8 months ago, played it once, was completely overwhelmed by the many complex details and never played it again. A few days ago I decided to seek out guidance on understanding the systems of this game, found your vids and I now have a fully functioning Solar Panel Array powering my modest attempt at a base. Thank you so much for your help it is really appreciated!

a few things I tend to do when setting up my first base: I start by building a 3x4 platform. once I have that built, I watch the shadow of the blocks long enough to determine which side the sun is on. so I know which side my greenhouse needs to be placed. I then build a block on the sun-rise corner, place one block above that, then place 3 blocks overhanging the 4x side of the platform. Once the blocks are placed, I weld them all up to their first stage. once they are welded, I place down the arc furnace over the center point of the block nearest to the sunrise corner, on a 4x side. then the autolathe on the block next to it, but one position away from center with the 'back' of the lathe along the 4x side. I then place one of the area power control units on the block next to the arc furnace; on the sunrise face of the 4x side, and wire up everything 'below' the area power control unit. I then place the 'flat' solar panel on the top of the 3 blocks in the corner, and build a ladder to go along the center of that side. once that is done, I build the electronics printer after mining a bit; and promptly build four solar kits. once they are built, I carry them to the end of the outcropping that is over the pieces of equipment, and place each panel down, and adjust each one differently, with about a 20% difference in vertical angle. this way, although I am not getting perfect recharge, I am getting decent charge throughout the day; until I can get my logic built, and affixed. once the logic is affixed... usually along the vertical face of the outcropping above the machines; I begin construction of the greenhouse, and atmospherics. ending with an advanced airlock on worlds with atmosphere, and a simple airlock on worlds without. once the airlock is done, I am usually to the point I have replaced one or two CO2 filters, plus have built several for the atmospherics; that I am ready to build a recycling system, as well as a furnace. This is what I consider 'basics' of beginning a world; and everything tends to deviate after I have those initial systems built up. I tend to build a 'satellite' base for the furnace, so I can capture gasses, but the initial build of the furnace is always on an open platform without any capture systems, at least 3 blocks away from my tool platform.

Thank you sir, that was far more clear and concise than the mess they have in the tutorial. I do wonder if there is any real advantage to having a two axis setup? It is a lot of added complexity, resources, and occupied space for what I would think would be a tiny bit of added power that might just be used up by the devices for the second axis control anyway. Might make for an interesting test to try. Anyway, thanks again. It was driving me nuts trying to remember how to do that.

I just got the game, but i cannot make those moving solarpanels, because it needs steel. Also storm is coming pretty fast and will destroy the entire base and whipe away what is not covered and will destroy all the boxes with its precious stuff inside. So after restarting the game several times and loosing the food supplies which you cannot replace ( i tried 2nd time dumping everything into a hole in the ground, but it still got destroyed by another storm) its pretty much essential to first bild a greenhouse and also house the solar panels under glass and as fast as possible build lockers and move all the precious food and stuff into the lockers so they wont get lost. So this video needs an update ! Its not working anymore this way. But i really like the simplicity of the logicchips to move the solar panels almost right. Its good enough and better then all the other tutorials out there which gives unnecessary 2 axis control. This takes way too much time to build at the start. I used the coal generator to finish building the greenhouse first and then build solars because i havent enough time to build because firstly i had to build an ice crusher because the really annoying thirst wrecked my nervs and you really have to fullfill that need for water before you can start building the greenhouse. Please keep up the good work, i loved every of your tutorial from se, so you didnt disappointed me with stationeer. Thank You !

Great video as always. I particularly like how you showed a scheme of the circuit. I'd like to leave a tip... The power distribution from solar panels to batteries isn't really balanced. Especially when you get stationary batteries, they tend to drain all the power from the solar panels leaving nothing for the APC supplying the tracking system. It's best to supply that APC from the stationary battery or whichever storage system that you're using for the base rather than directly from the solar panels. This way, you ensure than even in a power crisis situation, the tracking system is always the last thing to run out of power.

Greenhouse on Mars is super easy. For mine it was 1 circuit to expel gas if pressure was over 100, and 1 circuit to draw in cold martian air when temp went above 25. Filled it with martian air and my waste tank (cause its warm CO2) early on and let the sun warm it up. Other planets are much more challenging. Europa's poor solar angle, Moon requires cooling in a vacuum, and Titan's heat and lack of ices...

In my experience playing with a similar circuit, setting the ratio to 1.7 yields about 5% better output. You can verify with a solar controller console. I know it doesn't make sense mathematically. I think it has something to do with the minimum angles the panels can turn to and the increments they move at.

I put the starting solar panel on the same circuit with it set at 45 degrees facing the sunrise. That way if the battery runs out at night, when the sun comes up it will power the circuit and move the panels to the proper orientation. I ran out of the large batteries and the small ones did not power the circuit and panels all night.

btw where the panels start and stop away from flat on either side is of no concern in the calculation ... the part that matters is that they have to cross a path of 180 degrees .... even if the panel itself only actually does 170degrees ... it still travels a path of 180 degrees ... it goes horizon to horizon which is 180 degrees always

I get the Space Engineers reference, but it's not far from truth here, either. You can use a single IC10 chip with a script you can grab from the workshop to do all of this (I think you need a single batch writer as well). But those chips, and the stuff you need to use them, are a good bit further into the game - iirc, you need to be able to make solder and electrum, and it's quite expensive in materials. You also need a good power supply already in place.

Alert: Incoming wall of text! When I was doing logic in scrap mechanic, I searched hard for a way to give something a logic pathway and have it output a visual solution. No luck. Your visual display makes it so easy to translate into my object oriented programming brain. The conversion factor is interesting. When doing percents, I've always just taken the degree numerator, multiplied by 100 and divided by the denominator. Roughly, that result is your percentage. Is 1.8 a mathematical constant, or specific to this situation? One way to get around the lack of power for the circuit might be to have it set the angles for morning when the sunlight disappears so that power will be restored in the morning and doesn't need to last the night. As long as the circuit can either recharge its battery from the daily power input or from the master power storage, you're good to go. I imagine that's another set of logic processors though.

  • @derdotte

    @derdotte

    3 жыл бұрын

1.8°/% is a mathematical constant that comes from how you convert from percentage to angle. Going pure math would make this really easy to understand but lets just do it a bit differently: When thinking about numbers you know that 180 is larger than 100 and in an intervall 0 to 100 and 0 to 180 you could argue that there are more values in the later intervall (Lets leave university level math out here, i know this is strictly speaking wrong but who cares about this stuff anyway). so if you convert from 0 to 180 possible values to 0 to 100 possible values you must change the "sampling rate". So for 180 to 100 it means you do the calculation 180°/100% = 1.8°/%. But generally there are 360° in a circle so the actual angle per pecentage would be 3.6°/% as given by 360/100.

Just wanted to add: if you are used to object oriented programming, well, the logic and programming in this game is far from it. OOP is very high-level programming. This game's programming is very low-level. This type of logic is essentially modeling the "logic modules" level (can't recall the technical term for it), which is higher level than using discrete logic gates, but lower level than programming a CPU. These sort of math, comparison, and memory (ROM) modules are literally the building blocks of a CPU. The other big programming paradigm in this game is the IC10 chip, which is literally programmed in an assembly language. About as low-level as you can get and call it programming. Assembly has always hurt my brain, which was trained on high-level programming languages, but it can be quite fun to puzzle out. But don't expect classes and objects :)

  • @paultorney6552

@@JulieanGalak lower level than assembler is machine language. Assembler was developed to make it easier to code by using a symbolic language instead. You could use real characters for op codes, registers etc and provide comments rather that have to use hex or binary directly.
