Getting Reorganized With 3x5 Cards and Daily Themes

Ойын-сауық

It was time for a reboot of my home (dis)organization system. I have followed the #FlyLady plan
on-and-off for several years. I recently started using 3x5 cards to get reorganized as suggested in the books by Pam Young and Peggy Jones #sidetrackedhomeexecutives who were the inspirations behind The FlyLady, Marla Cilley.

I believe that these systems are like recipes- in general they work well and then you tweak them to suit your family.

I end up gleaning lots of motivation from them. BTW, I'm planning to update this video soon. People have asked how it's going and if I'm still using my cards. So I'm going to do a Part 2 soon.

I love the cards! I think just physically moving the cards would help keep me on track. I really like the meal plan cards included right in your box, too, so that's just handled along with other planning I created a Flylady journal years ago and for awhile it worked well, but I don't even open it anymore. 🙁I do still keep up my morning routine of Bible reading, feed dog, start a load of laundry, etc. but the zones just didn't work and my husband works shift work so it was difficult because his days off change. With cards, I can adjust week by week according to his schedule. I need to do like you and create my own. Makes the most sense.

I love reading about your systems Mitzi. I've gone long periods of time without using my FlyLady journal too. It needed (and still needs) a good bit of updating to make it usable for my current life. The cards are great because they are so flexible. And yes, the physical aspect of sorting them and moving them around is great!

I know this video is a year old, but I love seeing how you customize this system to work for you and your household. I am new to SHE, but not new to Fly Lady. I have to learn how to give myself permission to be the master of my own domain

Thanks so much for watching. I plan to do an update video about how it's going now a year later. I also have some declutter challenges that I'll be sharing. Stay tuned. Happy New Year!

I think it's hard to adapt any one system for your individual needs, so I like to glean different things from different people and programs and put them together to fit me.

I think it is wonderful how you have adapted the two systems to fill your needs and personality. I think that that is the first step to success, not trying to perfect someone else's plan. And I think the authors would be happy that you have done so; it means that they really helped you and they would love that.

I hope so too, Donna. I think when I try to follow someone else's plan without adapting it to my situation, it just doesn't work.

I watched this entire video twice. THANK YOU for really breaking it down. I agree, the base system(s) individually do not work, but the adapted concept COULD. Thanks for showing your modifications. Again, they wont work for me but they really helped get the gears turning for what changes I can make to my system. I’d love an update post!

Thank you so much! Good idea to do an update video because I started working a part time job, so my personal schedule had to change and it's been tricky to figure out the best way for me to stay on top of things. I might do an update in a few weeks. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Lol! You really were spot on in describing us!😄 Mama always said I was like Mammaw, who did everything quickly. Not perfectly, but finished.👍 So, I think I come by it honestly, I just took after a different relative.😂🤗

That's right! I had forgotten about her comparing you to Mammaw. I'm sure that Mammaw had no other choice in the matter, but to do things quickly, with so many children to take care of.

I’ve just gone through this same thing. A reboot. I so agree that every time I do this, some habits remain so I have fewer cards😊. I added zones this time as I want to decluttering our large home. 5 of our 6 children now have their own homes so it is time for the younger three to own their stuff and our student doesn’t need 4 closets! I divided my home into 12 zones and I am going to loop through these zones. The first time through is to declutter! I may not get much cleaning done during this time but I figure it hasn’t been thoroughly cleaned for 5 or so years (in some places like under the fridge) so another 3 months won’t make much difference. The next time through the zones, decluttering wont take as much time and I’ll have more time to clean.

I also am planning to start this technique. I am a subscriber to the Tidy Tutor, Kathy Roberts. She also started out with the sidetrack home executive and adapted her own routine. I really love listening to her and she has weekly get together‘s. I also have seen videos of her and the fly lady, And Pam Jones speaking together. I think between the two I will get a system going, but the tidy tutor is certainly worth looking into also.

Oh wow, this was a really great video! Thank you so much for sharing the systems you use (and why you use them). Flylady has a lot of wisdom, and I had no idea she had a youtube channel, that is so cool!! The 3 x 5 cards system looks great, and deals with one of the things that I find the hardest to deal with in any organiztional system: things that are done repeatedly. I really like planning, but re-writing the same things week to week to week can be frustration, it feels like this system really tackles that and has a great solution. Reminds me a bit of the Tickler system in Getting Things Done by David Allen. Thanks so much for this video, Elizabeth! I found it very helpful and loved hearing your take on things, in particular how you adjust the systems to work for what you need. Sorry for the super late reply, but I had been looking forward to this video & wanted to give myself proper time to watch & enjoy. Take care!

Thanks so much Shannon! I really enjoy hearing about what works for people and am always trying to improve my systems. So far I have established some good habits doing this, and then other things I planned haven't really clicked in (yet). But I figure that any positive change is good.
