Many don’t know this, but the association of “Make America Great Again” with Donald Trump goes back as early as January 1, 2012. That was when some Trump supporters filed paperwork in Texas to create the “Make America Great Again Party” with hopes that he would run as a third-party candidate in the presidential election of 2012. Well, Trump didn’t run for President that year, but after the election he started using the slogan regularly both online and in person. He even got the slogan trademarked, although apparently not exclusively on merchandise. After noticing that he failed to do this, Bobby Bones, a well known radio and TV personality and Dancing with the Stars winner, bought the rights to sell the slogan on apparel. He sold all “Make America Great Again” apparel through his own company and gave all the profits to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He also called out Trump publicly, saying he’d give up the exclusive rights to the merchandise if Trump donated $100,000 to St. Jude. Apparently, Trump actually did this, and on November 11th, 2015, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office made the transfer official. By that time, Trump had been campaigning for President for several months and was using the slogan more and more.
And soon, the Make America Great Again red hat, or MAGA hat, became the quickest and most iconic way to show the world that you not only supported his campaign, but you fully supported him.

It IS a memorable symbol, more so because "great" is very much in the eye of the beholder, so to speak. Most viewers will instinctively visualize something about "America" (which is implied to mean the United States of the same) that supposedly made it great, e.g. "We used to watch more baseball and that was what really made America great." It makes no real statement about what might be considered great and what might be considered not so great. When was "America" great? Why was it "great?" A Native American might have a very different idea of what constitutes "great" than someone with a Gadsden flag bumper sticker or someone waving a US flag. It's very clever--it simply holds a mirror up to one's nostalgia-fueled political desires and implies some form of promise there. Wear this hat and support this politician, and maybe we'll watch more baseball together.

It was never meant as "let us turn the clocks back on everything" It was meant as: Let us be the beacon of freedom and prosperity. Let us be the country where the citizenry are strong-willed and independent of government. Let us be strong enough to speak the truth in the face of political correctness. Let us lead the world, as we did after Pearl Harbor took place. Let us be a country where the most important thing is family. Let us be tough again. There are many dark parts of our history that we (almost... of course there are still a few backwards, deranged lunatics) unanimously want to bury in our past, but there was also a lot that was great about our country's founding and its subsequent growth into a world superpower. In the past 15 years or so, our country has become soft, timid, and weak. We've become too afraid to tell the truth. We've become too weak to work to live (it's an absurd suggestion that you shouldn't have to work very hard to survive... nothing screams privilege more than that). Prior to the 2008 recession, and from 2014-2019, Americans had never had it better, and yet young leftists thought that the whole system sucked, wanted to tear it down, and give all power to the government. I'm sorry, but there is absolutely tons to admire about our country's history.

@@iammrbeat No, I'm kind of young. It is true that we have had some rough parts in our history, like the civil unrest during the 60's and 70's and the violent crime of the 80's and 90's. We bounced back from those. It feels like we aren't coming back from this slump. This nation is coming apart at its foundation, and it is widespread across the country, not concentrated in certain areas. Half of the country now thinks our foundational myths are evil (Columbus, founding fathers, Jamestown / Pocahontas, manifest Destiny, etc.) Race relations are also getting pretty bad. We are in some ways more segregated now than ever. We are becoming a multi racial country, and it seems like this is resulting is parallel societies to some degree.
