Father of 3 Bryant Mangum says he’s been pulled over by the LAPD roughly 30 times in the last few years alone - listen to him explain what it’s like to get stopped as a Black man in America.
In the wake of the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter protests, we're finally paying attention to the systemic injustice of police departments against communities of culture, with Black and African American communities particularly met with injustice. In a culture of widespread police brutality and racism, it can be a scary thing living as a Black person in America, where every interaction with the police can turn into a life or death situation. Many Black Americans live in fear of becoming the next George Floyd, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Ahmaud Arbrey, and countless other Black citizens killed at the hands of police.

I'm a white 61 year old and my son is married to a wonderful woman of color who happens to be a kindergarten teacher, I was giving her a lift home one night and we were pulled over, the cop told her to get out, then proceeded to accuse her of being a prostitute, and I was her "John". I was literally horrified, I explained she was my daughter in law, and mother of two of my grandchildren. Only then did the cop suddenly change tone. He didn't apologise to her, but said to me, "Sorry sir, but we get a lot of street girls turning tricks around here, sorry to bother you".. I asked if he would've stopped us if she'd been white, and he just replied, "Have a good night sir", got in his car and drove off..

When I was 16 I got pulled over by a cop, I was driving my moms new car to the store and all of a sudden flashing lights. I was a 16 yeR old black girl the cop had his gun pulled out and then called for other cop cars. I kept my hands on the dashboard and was terrified and in tears. When I asked the female cop what I did wrong I was told they assumed my car was stolen. After everything checked out I was allowed to leave I went home and refused to drive. I did not drive again until my family moved to Canada ten years later.

I'm curious.. I'm a white 40 year-old man that was lucky enough to grow up here in Canada, and I've never seen racial injustice happening in front of me. Do you feel safer in Canada? How are your interactions with police in comparison?? I find it absolutely disgusting and wrong that the police, who are supposed to be your help as the guy said, always assume a person with dark skin is up to something, pull them over and butalizes them more, and a lot of times, make up bogus charges, like the dumb "resisting arrest"... of course you're going to resist a wrongful arrest!! Cops handle people in a way such that they HAVE to struggle to not get hurt.

Sad reality here. I (a tall somewhat muscular Black guy in his late 20s) was pulled over by the police a couple years ago for going 2mph over the speed limit. The cop proceeded to ask me where I lived, where was I going, how far away was that destination and so forth. He then asked me what do I do for a living to which I responded that I just graduated a few weeks ago. He said "from what, high school?" I look at him crazy because I'm clearly a grown azz man, and say "no....law school." He turned Casper the friendly ghost pale and told me to have a nice day and slow down. I filed a complaint but I'm sure they investigated themselves and found themselves innocent.

He used it as an excuse to pull me over for whatever reason which is why he never issued me a citation. And I hope you’re truly concerned and not trying to pick fights/downplay the seriousness of this issue that will take all of our combined efforts to remedy.

I experience the same all the time. I’m a young black male. I am successful in business so I drive an expensive car. I was recently late for a new job. 2 cops followed me for a while. They finally stopped me and said I used a turn signal too late. Well yeah, you guys looked at me then got behind my car and followed me at every turn for like 5 minutes. I started getting nervous because I had done nothing wrong but they were closely following me. They very aggressive with me, cuffed me, searched my car, searched my body for “weapons”, asked me where I was going, where did I work. They didn’t give me a ticket. I have no criminal record and I don’t use drugs. I continued to work and was too embarrassed to tell coworkers why I was late (I’m the only blk person so they wouldn’t understand). I wish I could just drive in peace.

I was pulled over 4 years ago when I was 20. I was going the speed limit, when I looked over and my eyes met with a motorcycle cop who was tucked away with a radar. It was at that moment that I knew I messed up. Of course he turned on his lights and pulled me over. I was scared because I knew I didnt do anything wrong. If i know i broke no laws, why am I being pulled over? The cop asked my name, where I was going (I answered work), where I work and what I do there. He asked who's car I was driving. When I told him it was mine he looked like he just didnt believe me. He asked for my license and registration, I gave it to him. He came back and told me he stopped me because my windows appeared to be tinted to dark. He never wrote me a citation, never tested my window tint or anything. My car was brand new, a 2016 hyundai sonata sport. I felt like it was an accomplishment to be able to purchase it at 20 years old. He tore all the excitement I had away from me after owning the car for only a couple weeks. How did my windows appear to be darker than allowed? I'm from vegas, we literally have people driving around with limo tint and my car was straight from the dealer, no modifications.

Me and my friends in our car pulled up beside the road in front of a Petrol station for literally 3 mins because we were sorting out our food we bought from Macdonald's and suddenly a police car appears with lights behind us.He came to our friend asked what we were doing. And out of the corner of my eye I see the cashier looking scared at us from his counter. He kept looking at us suspiciously asked for ID which my friend gave.He walks back to his car.But the crazy part was he walked back to our car with his freaking Dog and circling our car.He told us someone called him in of a suspicious group in a car. After a few long pauses and flashlights in our faces and him telling my friend to check the cars warantee or something. He went back to his car.We are all brown boys in the car. That moment got me hard because that cops face never once smiled or concerned. He looked down on us.I felt like I was nothing.Especially seeing the casheirs white mans face scared to us.I'm not black but I get called the N word more times than I say it, which I don't.That type of racism hurts and stays with you a long time. -a brown US Islander.

Also, during times of slavery, Afro Americans were still labeled as "thugs" , and "deviant" when it was actually white people doing the crime and blaming them. My point is, regardless of those stats, they will still be disliked and people will always come up with a reason to hate and discriminate against them. Please consider this. Have a blessed day, remember to repent.

I was in the car with my (ex) boyfriend one time when he got pulled over. I remember him putting his hands on the top of the wheel and telling the officer EVERY move he was going to make before he did it. When they asked him to step out of the car, I said no. They had come to our car with tasers OUT, I was afraid for his safely. Instead I got out of the car, stood by the drivers window and explained the situation. It was only then, when the white women spoke, that we were free to go. When the officers left we cried, both of us. But never spoke about the situation. We both knew what could have happened if my skin color wasn’t there.

FACT: If you are BLACK and get pulled over, the safest thing to do is to STICK BOTH HANDS OUT THE WINDOWand wait further instructions from the police. I say this because then the police can't say that you reached for something and any passerbys will see your hands out the window. Yes, its unfortunate but true.

Remember you have the right to remain silent. Give them your drivers license, registration and insurance info. Do not answer any questions they ask you. If you are a passenger, remain silent and do not give up your info. Make sure you say that you don’t consent to any searches. The police will probably still pull you out and search your car, but at least you have some legal footing to stand on. If you give up your rights you have no recourse.

Im white, been in a few issues with police. In none of them did I ever feel like I was in danger. Even the one time I had actually been doing something illegal and got caught. it never even occurred to me that they might be a threat to me unless I actively tried something stupid. I didn't get what black people were going on about, since the cops always seemed fine to me. And then I had a black boyfriend for a while. I very quickly became aware of the problem after that. Before that I had no direct exposure to how police treat black people, and it was like I had stepped into some disturbing alternate dimension. Being white, you just really can't know what its like. Even with my exposure I know thats only the tip of the iceberg, and I will never truly understand what its like. But at least I know that the problem is very real now.

Im white, I was pulled over at 130am for "improper lane usage". I said I don't even know what that means. Cops said "your tire touched the yellow line". I kinda laughed and said ok cuz I knew what was happening. He then asked where I was coming and going and quickly turned it into a full on dui stop. I was not drunk. He ended up giving me two tickets. Lane usage and traveling to close to the car in front of me. Not speeding or reckless driving. He saw a white kid at night and thought I must be drunk. He was wrong. I filed my own motions and demurr at court and won. How did I learn to do that? I googled it.

It really makes me sick hearing about this and knowing this happens all the time here in America. Automatically being assumed to be a criminal, a burglar, a killer, a druggie, all because of something you're born with and inherited that you have no choice or control over. Being profiled as a bad or suspicious person just because you look different. I know it probably will never happen to me (being white and all), but just imagining myself in the position of an African American being confronted by police just makes me tense up. I can't help put sympathize with these people.

The police in my city will drive behind you for a few miles as they run your plate. When it happens a few times you begin to catch the pattern - swoop in tight on your bumper for a bit then overtake you and zoom off like they remembered something important. Occasionally they choose to pull you over. last time my husband was stopped and issued a ticket for running a light and speeding. The cop was behind us for 2 miles so when did this happen? We took it to court and turns out the cop never filed a report so it was dismissed but he just wasted our entire day sitting in traffic court. Happens regularly...

Someone needs to go undercover into a police training school and understand where this comes from. This sort of prejudice isn't natural, it's taught. Police trainees are taught to profile this way. And the actions of the people who are supposed to uphold the law and protect our society inform (some of) the public on how to react to our fellow citizens. It doesn't have to be this way and there's a clear root to this problem with the authorities: this is not natural, this is bred into them.

It's funny how true this is. I remember when my brother got pulled over with me, his girlfriend and his son in the car. We'd been to see my Aunt just for a regular visit and then were stopping to get something to eat. Going the speed limit, no tail lights out. My brother did just buy a pretty nice car (because he had the money to) and was really happy to show it off a bit to our cousins. Boom! Stopped. No reason for why we were pulled over and my brother was completely taken out of the car, searched, you name it. As a black woman, I've been pulled over a few times and even I was accused of having 'alcohol' on my breath. I had gum in my mouth and spit it out to show the police (after being prompted to) that it was harmless. The guy tailed me for like...a few blocks...literally right on my bumper almost. I consider these stories pretty tame compared to others I've heard.
