Getting past Crate Anxiety

Hey lets try this again.
Here is a great video we were able to do on kennels and kennel anxiety. We get a lot of rescues here and not all of them are kennel crate trained. Some are terrified of the kennel and we work really hard to get them over it and give them a safe space to go to. This was a kennel that Impact dog crates had donated to us and we ended up passing that love onto the owner of the dog in the video so she could have a chance of getting past her anxiety.

    Our labs love their kennels. I’d never kennel trained any of my dogs until we got them due to the high energy and it was a great decision. Hopefully Ellie will mellow out the way Ben and Luke have and come to love the kennel as a safe place to be. Awesome channel and cause brother! Keep it coming.

    Yah I need a MUCH longer video on this. We got my dog at 9 months old and as we picked him up the 10 year old girl daughter says yay he is leaving... and I asked why? When he is in a kennel he screams the entire time. And they kenneled him all day. So when we got him we didnt put him in a kennel for 3 weeks and tried just small little amounts like to mop the floor and he screams freaks out. I do have him trained that he can not come out of kennel unless he is sitting and I give command ok. And he can successfully do this. We have tried.. bully sticks (he wont touch them until we get home, but I pick them up and put them away immediately. They are only for crate time) kong and marrow bone. He just refuses to touch them and screams howls barks the entire time. We have had him a few months now and a few times we just HAVE to put him in the kennel because we are all leaving. But this isnt something we lile doing. We have cameras set up on him and music going and actually we can talk to him through the camera and that kinda helps. I need to help my dog. I need help. Beggging for help.

    @@nikkbee88 we always made the kennel their happy place. It was never intended to be a place only to go when we were gone. Some of the things we read stated that dogs normally like kennels because of their connections with living in caves as wild dogs. Don’t know how true that is just read it. So when we got our labs we made the kennels comfy and put treats and their food in there to start and didn’t lock them in there. The food and treats is to encourage them not to go to the bathroom there as dogs don’t want to defecate where they eat. And then we slowly started to leave them in there a little bit at a time. Both of our dogs will now go lay in their kennels with the doors open because that’s “their place” and they are now 5 and 3 years old. We take travel kennels hunting and camping and they still do the same. Good luck with your dogs, patience and good vibes help a lot because the dogs can read you like no ones business. Unfortunately sounds like there’s a large training scar because of the previous owners. Our 3 year old Luke has some serious separation issues as he was abandoned and we rescued him. So the crate training was a little more difficult with him but he now loves it too because he knows he’s getting treats when he goes in and he loves the pad we put in there for him.

    Its def a safety thing for the dog and your home. I am sure people have amazing dogs that dont need to be kenneled (my personal dogs dont need kennels). I still kennel them when I am not home. imagine the confusion and hurt that could happen to your dog during a home invasion, the anxiety a dog might feel being able to watch every car that passes could be the owner coming home excited to see his companion. I kennel for there health.

    Thanks for the helpful video! Saw in your other responses that you have the high anxiety crate and want a collapsible for travel. Can you travel with the high anxiety crate? Obviously it’s heavy and not easy to transport - but for the occasional hotel trip, is it doable? We probably need that model for our pittie but worried about transportability.

  • @secondchancek9servicedogs320

    @secondchancek9servicedogs320

    You can try some CBD maybe to help cut his or her nerves, (Uncanna K9 is who I recommend code secondchancek9), It could be the push to help the anxiety he is feeling with the crate (not a fan of heavy sedatives). Since the dog isn't food driven it may take lots of time and exploration. Trying different toys, foods, busy bones to help manage his anxiety. So hard when the anxiety overruns the drive. The other thing is an anxiety crate (Impact dog crates has one that makes it impossible for them to hurt themselves in a kennel). I. would also cover it with a blanket to make it feel like a den. Dogs are den animals so make it as dark in there as you can. Good luck this is a tough one. I dont like leaving dogs loose when I am not home as I wouldn't leave a child home alone unsupervised.

    I can't swing $1k for a cage. I have a $100 wire cage for this GS boy and he busted out in 20 minutes. He also chewed the wire right off of it. sheese... What do you think about using a muzzle? I think I can reinforce the cage with zip ties. He is fine with the cage, he just doesn't want me to leave him. Not anxiety, SPOILED ROTTEN!! He's my ride or die lol! thank you!

    This seemed more like an add for the kennel rather than fixing the issue. Which is fine. But I need advice on the issue. My dog is a rescue and he'll go in no prob, and stay no prob, the problem is when I leave he pisses himself. Muzzle keeps him from chewing the bars and cooler keeps him quiet. But the pissing is out of hand. We have things in common and I'd respect and appreciate your take. SINE PARI!

    I would highly recommend finding a local trainer as not being able to see the behavior first hand makes it impossible to diagnose why he or she is showing the behavior in the first place. I would be hesitant to give advice here with the small snapshots of the behavior. one thing to try would be shorter stents in the kennel with an outdoor break in between. Good luck man hope you get it worked out.
