The old masters also painted scenes from the bible, Homer, or from popular books at the time, or they painted famous actresses or society belles everyone was obsessed with! You could call all of that fan art, as well.

i was vaguely listening to the opinion on fanart and i have to agree that it doesnt make it less artistic. Bros back then were painting the greek gods, stories from the bible and scenes from commonly known stories and nowadays we praise those paintings and when u think about it, theyre technically just fanart too.

I completely feel you on the idea of traditional art being a much more 'special treat to me' sorta thing. I originally started with oil paints but I can no longer use them because I live with birds, they're my partner's. There's just too much risk of them having health issues or even passing away if I paint with oils. My brushwork has 100% translated into my digital work. But I definitely miss traditional painting. I can still do watercolors, ink and gouache. For some reason I just can't do acrylics. xD They don't work great for me outside of painting miniatures or statues.

another thing I can recommend, especially for small art spaces, Water mixable oils. You don't need any agressive solvents as long as you use the fitting mediums.

You did very well for a first attempt at oil paints! I'm not a professional painter but I've been painting for many years. If you want the paints to dry faster, you can use a bit of Liquin to speed up the drying. I would suggest using your solvent only for the initial imprimatura. If you've used too much turps, don't be afraid to wipe it off with a cloth or paper towel. It's easy to use too much of it. Once the imprimatura is laid, I'd say apply thin layers of paint only, and use a tiny bit of Liquin to thin down the paint. As you go, you can add thicker layers of paint. After using liquin, wash your brushes well. They may become useless if you forget :) I use brown soap to clean my brushes. It's cheap and fat/oily. Those paints are student grade, or even lower than student grade, which means there is not a lot of pigment in them. It's mostly filler and oil. Try not to use white until it's absolutely necessary. Too much white from the start makes it hard to get your colours to pop afterwards. White will always cool down your mixtures. It pays off to even do studies without white (eg with a yellow and a purple only). Use complementary colours in your shadows, eg if you have a lot of reds in your higher tone colours, try using greens in some of your unlit areas. Anyway, this looks really promising for a first attempt! Keep going, you're doing great! Being brave always pays off later on :)

I really relate to what you shared about originality and perfectionism especially @9:50 ! I like poetry, and so often I come across a great line or verse that moves me and my first thought is "wow how didn't I think of that?" or "how could I possibly measure up to xyz?" When in reality, some of my best work has come from that inspiration that others evoke in me. Well said!!

I am a Watercolor painter, but I imagine my paintings take around the same amount of time as a digital artist. Honestly, the main difference I imagine is having to scan and render my work digitally before being able to share online or make products. I was actually working on a Watercolor fanart while listening, love seeing your adventures in trying new mediums!

Mediocre oil painter here with some small answers for you. The white paint should definetly be opaque. From my experience white is usually quite opaque and has high tinting strength. I have never seen oil paint do this odd translucent effect you experienced. This leads me to believe that it is a definite quality problem with these paints where maybe there is too much filler or oils or something. I would recommend Blick/Utrech oil paints if you are looking for a cheap but decent quality paint for learning. For solvent storage/usage solutions there are 2 main ways to go about it and I find a combination of these techniques to be the best option. 1 option is to clean the paint off the brush with a rag mostly before dipping into the solvent for the final clean. option 2 is using 2 seperate jars, 1 to clean the brushes and 1 to dip the brush into like you would using watercolors or another water soluble media. I like to combine the two by cleaning my brush almost entirely by wiping it on a rag before cleaning in one jar and using a seperate bottle with an eye dropper for adding solvent to my paints for mixing. They do sell special air tight jars with filters in them for seperating out the sediment at blick and other stores though these are not necesary and you need to wait for the pigment to settle regarless for these to be worth buying. I also find that I do not need a lot of solvent on my brush and actually too much solvent sitting in the bristles makes the paint more difficult to work with so i wipe my brushes after cleaning to remove excess solvent. I recommend the Paint Coach here on youtube for tips and tricks when it comes to starting oil paint.

Maybe try working with a bit of a larger square brush when doing your under painting/sketch? I find it works wonders, but it may just be preference 😅 also, if you want a good under layer pop of color try priming the canvas with a neon acrylic paint instead of a white primer! Creates a super fun look! All this is from a beginner oil painter though, so take it all with a grain of salt 😅

Other way around, I think. "Fat" means more oils/additives. Lean means more straight paint. Use thicker ( less adultered not actually amount) paint as the base, and get fatter/more transparent on top, as in glazing. Oil dries slow, so if the top dries faster than the bottom layers it can crack. Gorgeous painting!
